Introduction to Still Life Painting at The Society of Figurative Arts

Introduction to Still Life Painting at TSOFA starts Feb. 21st

Instructor: Chris Brizzard (chrisbrizzard.com, @chrisbrizzard)

Length: 5 weeks, limited to 4 students

Time: Wednesdays, 10am – 1pm starting February 21st

Cost: $180

The goal of this class is to introduce students to fundamental painting practices needed to set up a strong piece of work. Students will learn the core concepts of the block-in, separating light from shadow, setting up proper value relationships, getting the light effect and more. We will also look at still-life paintings from today and the past in order to expand our knowledge of the craft. Students will set up their own still-life by the end of the course.

Week 1: Introduce/Review core drawing concepts

Week 2: The Block-in; capturing the essence of the set-up

Week 3: Value studies in black and white; capturing the light effect

Week 4: Students set up still-life; examples from today and the past

Week 5: Continue still-life; review

 

Materials: vine charcoal, Canson Moonstone Mi-Teintes drawing paper (5 sheets), Burnt Umber, Ivory Black, Titanium White (no student-grade paints), assortment of bristle brushes (filberts and flats), canvases, Gamsol, paper towels

February Drawing Classes at Klarity and Khaos

Drawing Fundamentals Classes Start Feb. 6 at Klarity and Khaos

 

Length: 5 weeks (one day a week)

Cost: $175

Two Options: Tuesday mornings, 10-12 or Tuesday evenings, 6:30-8:30pm.

This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of drawing, the underpinnings that set you up for a strong piece of work. Often overlooked and undervalued, these underpinnings have withstood the test of time and have been in use for centuries. The elements of these underpinnings include the block-in, shape accuracy, proportion, and separating light from shadow. Students will start by copying drawings that incorporate these principles and will eventually move into setting up their own still-lives and drawing from life.

Week 1: Understanding shape; the Bargue plates

Week 2: Adjusting proportion; the Bargue plates, continued.

Week 3: The importance of values; the 5-value scale.

Week 4: The importance of planes; learning to interpret planes from life.

Week 5: Putting it all together; students work on their own still life.

Length: 5 weeks (one Wednesday a week, 6:30-9:30pm)

Cost: $185

This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of drawing and painting, the underpinnings that set you up for a strong piece of work. Often overlooked and undervalued, these underpinnings have withstood the test of time and have been in use since the Renaissance. The elements of these underpinnings include the block-in, shape accuracy, proportion, and separating light from shadow. Components of the course include:

Week 1: Point to Line, Line to Shape – Block-in procedures.

Week 2: Shape to Plane to Structure – Block-In of Geometric Solids.

Week 3: Structure to Value to Volume – The 5-Value system.

Week 4: Value and Volume – Blocking-In and shaping the skull. The importance of planes.

Week 5: Master Study of Leonardo Skull and/or student still-life setup.

MATERIALS: Drawing Pad, 18 x 24 (Strathmore 400), Graphite Pencils, Kneaded Eraser
