Painting with Powdered Charcoal & Acrylic Workshop with Judy Mason Oct. 1

The Upstairs Gallery in Arlington has asked me to do the charcoal/ acrylic workshop.It is a lot of fun and there is multiple ways to use charcoal.  We will stamp with it and paint with it to get a variety of

Learn a different approach to drawing and painting.  After applying the  charcoal to canvas or paper, you can then draw with water or pencils
or brushes to create exciting and unusual effect.  Bring your own drawings to incorporate into your paintings.  The charcoal will be provided.
October 1  Saturday
10 a.m. till 4 p.m.
Fee:  $50
Supplies:  Exacto knife, several canvases, boards, 20×24 or smaller, w/c paper (gesso) acrylics,metallics,brushes(flat 2″ and small round)
scissors,Krylon workable fixatif spray,mask and goggles for charcoal and  spray,plastic gloves, paper towels,drawing pencils (2b for shading)
and drawings you will use, sheets of craft foam)white) any size.
We will have many different starts so bring plenty of things to paint
on.  You can bring old paintings and stamp the charcoal images
over them.
Attached are some paintings I have finished using this method.

Students will develop a personal approach to loose, aggressive mark making with a combination of additive and subtractive techniques using charcoal and erasers. The class will focus upon mark making as it relates to abstraction and later students will explore the different ways these same techniques can be applied to observational drawing.

Proportions of the Face Workshop Jan. 19 with Brett Dyer

January Drawing Workshop: 
Proportions of the Face with a Focus on Value and Subtractive Charcoal Techniques: 

Sunday, January 19th; noon to 3:00 $60.00 with Brett Dyer


In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn the basic proportions of the human face and how to apply a dramatic value range with additive and subtractive charcoal techniques to create a portrait that is not only more anatomically accurate, but that also implies a stronger sense of three dimensional space and form.

Supplies: #2 Pencil, Black Ultra or Fine tip Sharpie Marker, Drawing Paper 18×24″ or smaller, Compressed Charcoal and or Charcoal Pencils, Vine or Willow Charcoal, Kneaded Eraser, White Conte or White Charcoal Pencil, Blue Painters Tape (optional for clean edges), Workable Fixative (optional for spraying drawing), Retractable Eraser (optional for small areas to erase), A high contrast, full range of values, black and white photocopy or printed image of a face. Hint- Try putting a light on one side of the face only in a dark room and taking a photo with no flash. Make the photo black and white on a computer or photocopy it on a copy machine and up the contrast if needed. Make sure the copy is 5×7 or larger.
