What:  Gary Chapman Charcoal Drawing Workshop
When:  August 5th and 6th
Where:  The Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E Hickory St, Denton, TX

Gary Chapman, Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will be conducting a two-day Charcoal Drawing workshop at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts, August 5 and 6. This workshop sponsored by the Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST) precedes the opening of an exhibition of Gary’s exhibition entitled The Helmet Project in the Meadows Gallery at the Center for the Visual Arts,

Students will develop a personal approach to loose, aggressive mark making with a combination of additive and subtractive techniques using charcoal and erasers. While charcoal will be the primary medium, students will be encouraged to later combine other dry and wet media such as Conte crayon, ink and gesso. The class will focus upon mark-making as it relates to abstraction and later students will explore the different ways these same techniques can be applied to observational drawing. Robin Butt states that “Gary is a dynamic and inspirational artist.”

Cost of the workshop is $110 for VAST members and $145 for non-members. To sign up for the workshop, email Kristin Spalding at kgn2507@yahoo.com.

Gary Chapman received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BA and BS from Berea College. Chapman has had over 50 solo exhibitions with institutions such as The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, University of Cincinnati, University of Georgia, and University of Miami.
