2927 MAPLE AVE, DALLAS, TX 75201

World renown scribe, Paul Antonio, Instructor
Open to Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced students.

It is a practical day of looking at this 13th century script discussed in the lecture the night before – attendance to the lecture is not a prerequisite but would be helpful.

We will be using products supplied by ChalkInk and learning how they are used on non-traditional surfaces like glass, walls, blackboards, this is a different skill to working on paper and in the class we will cultivate confidence in both working on these non-traditional surfaces and on in writing at larger sizes.

“Brushing in” the New Year: Chinese Art & Calligraphy

“Brushing in” the New Year

An Exhibition of Chinese Art and Calligraphy in

Celebration of the Lunar New Year

Co-sponsored by the

Organization of Chinese Americans-DFW

Works by Maria Feng-Yung Shieh, Yu-Shou Chang, Kevin Kai Hung Chan and Brandy Thomas will be featured at the Artists’ Showplace Gallery, 15615 Coit Road #230, Dallas 75248 from February 6 – March 28, 2015

Please join us for an Opening Reception on Friday, February 13th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.  Meet the artists, enjoy magnificent artwork, Chinese instrumental music, the “Lion Dance” and complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres.

Maria Feng-Yung Shieh was born in Taiwan in 1943.  At age 21, she married an American and moved to Dallas.  Her husband, employed with the United Nations, took the family to live around the word in countries such as Indonesia and Thailand. Ms. Shieh began Chinese watercolor painting while living in Bangkok, studying under Mr. Lim Eow, master of the Lin Nan Style of painting.  Later, she would go to China to take an intensive course in the art of Chinese painting at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou.  Ms. Shieh has five paintings on permanent exhibit at the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures in Corpus Christi.  Her work has also been exhibited at the Irving Arts Center, the Association of Oriental Arts, the Dallas Convention Center, and at the Plano Asian Heritage Festival.

Birds and Flowers by Yu-Shou Chang

Yu-Shou Chang, born in Hebei, China, graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts.  She studied under master professor Liu Yu-Shan for more than twenty years, specializing in the painting of birds, flowers and plants.  After moving to Taiwan, she became painting instructor at the National Taiwan University, and Taipei JianGuo High School.  Her works have been exhibited widely throughout the country, having been invited to participate in prestigious exhibits such as Taiwan Corners, National Fine Art Exhibition, Taiwan Contemporary Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition.

Her works have also been added to the Taiwan National Museum collections.  Yu-Shou Chang currently resides in Dallas and teaches at the Chinese cultural activity center.

Kevin Kai Hung Chan, born in 1940, was educated in Hong Kong.  In 1964, he graduated from the Chinese University in their first graduating class.  Following graduation, he taught Chinese literature and calligraphy at St. Paul’s College, the first school established in Hong Kong in 1851, a post he held for thirty-five years.  In 1996 he immigrated to the U.S. and has taught Chinese calligraphy in Dallas for seventeen years.  He has held many exhibitions of Chinese calligraphy individually and jointly in Hong Kong, Japan and Dallas.

He is the current Vice Chairman of Dallas Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Association, a position he has kept for the last fifteen years.

Brandy Thomas attended Iweeta McIntosh’s Chinese watercolor class thirty years ago, wanting to learn better brush control.  These began an ongoing fascination with Sumi painting and the secrets of the Chinese paint brush.  Among these secrets are the philosophies of the Four Treasures (rice paper, bamboo brush, sumi ink, and ink stone) and the Four Gentlemen (bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom.  Brandy is multi-talented – an artist, textile designer, sculptor, painter and Chinese Watercolor instructor.  She has also done large installation murals for such Dallas institutions as the Conspiracy Museum, the Gaston Oaks Baptist Church, and Hillcrest Church.  Brandy is a member of the Irving Arts Association and is a Lifetime member of the Association of Oriental Arts (Tao Arts, an Association Member with IAA).

Tucked away in the corner of a strip center at Arapaho and Coit Roads in Dallas, the Artists’ Showplace is a unique 12,000 ft. space that sponsors internationally renowned artist/instructors in monthly workshops throughout the year.
