Texas Visual Arts Association: “Signs of the Unseen” call for art – deadline April 20

“Signs of the Unseen” TVAA Gallery Art Exhibition for May 2018

Signs of the Unseen: Illuminating the Divine Every Day Life.  Art has the ability to transform the mundane of everyday life into a greater awareness of the beauty of life and connection to something both within and beyond ourselves.  Whether it be seen in the beauty of creation; as in nature and the patterns of life, the awakening presence to a divinity more closely personalized to Self, a Universal connection to the source of life; or a religious personification of God or Goddess. We have the opportunity to bear witness to signs of the unseen in every day life. Open to all spiritual, religious, scientific, or agnostic walks in celebration of each artist’s unique. This is an invitation to explore the meaning that connects with you and how you share it through your artwork.

This is open to members and non-members of TVAA (Texas Visual Artists Association) with ribbons being awarded to Best of Show, 1st, 2nd 3rd place, and honorable mention.

All artwork must be wired correctly. No ½” canvases will be curated without a frame. Gallery wrapped work must have clean edges and no staples showing. Work that does not follow gallery requirements will not be hung.  If invited to the exhibition you must sign up for one sitting day during the month or pay a $25.00 sitting fee for someone to cover your day. Any work not picked up on take down day with be stored for a $5.00 a day fee and then considered abandoned after 30 days. Any artwork sold pays a 25% fee to the TVAA.

If you have further question you may contact the Gallery Director, Maegan Kirschner, at tvaagallerydallas@gmail.com. See also the TVAA website at http://tvaa.org

About the Curators:

Lauren Dickinson

“Art has woven a beautiful tapestry throughout my life. What started as   sketching portraits for fun led to taking all the art classes I could as electives in high school. Little did I know that I was opening a previously dormant fountain of creativity that carried me through high school and into art college for a number of semesters. Due to external circumstances and life events, I was unable to complete my studies at that school, although I didn’t let it stop me entirely. I received acceptance into every program I continued to apply to, including the prestigious Cornish College of Arts Visual Arts program in Seattle.  Major family events hit; life still had other plans for me at the time, and I had to let go of my dream – temporarily, as life would have it.
It has been a journey of picking up the brush again throughout the years. Inspired by love and the profound healing process I was experiencing through my healing arts career, one summer day I let go of all expectation, and just started again. Paint started randomly covering all of my old attempts at art throughout the years. I stayed with it, and unbeknownst to me at the time, I was discovering the freedom of expression of abstract art.  The wellspring of creativity, now reactivated, has overflowed onto the  canvas of my life with fluidity, vibrant color and a rediscovered  passion. Finally life has what it had been missing for so many years – a return to Art, where my heart was hiding; and could finally come out  again. Such is the promise of pursuing what is deepest in our hearts –  divine love.

The Bath House Cultural Center and exhibition curator, Jose Vargas, invite visual artists to submit entries for the 24th Annual El Corazón art exhibition.
Since 1993, Mr. Vargas has organized the El Corazón art exhibition in Dallas. This popular exhibition is a beloved annual tradition at the Bath House Cultural Center that gives artists an opportunity to create various artistic interpretations of the human heart. This passionate and eclectic exhibition features a variety of ideas, styles, and concepts inspired by the heart (El Corazón), an important and universal symbol in art.
SUGGESTED THEME: Hearts and Music

Listening to music can be good for the heart. When you hear music, what feelings do you experience? Well, put those feelings onto a canvas (or other media). Think of this exhibition as El Corazón with a musical slant! Create a piece of art based on a favorite song, or a particular style of music, or musician. Or, perhaps, you can do a combination of a heart and a musical instrument. When it comes to combining the symbol of the heart and the concept of music, the possibilities are limitless.

TVAA’s 2017 Abstracted Redacted call for art

May 1 – 31, 2017
Reception Sunday, May 7, 2-4 pm

The website for the TATE informs us that abstract ” means to separate or withdraw something from something else. Abstract art is art which is not representational, it could be based on a subject or may have no source at all in the external world.”

When sensitive information is removed or obscured from a document before it is published, it is said to have been redacted. In writing, this is a form of editing.

In this exhibit, we hope to show your abstract work with some redaction. You are the creator and must decide how that occurs. Will you use text which you conceal? Will you have an area in your piece that has had some content removed? Will a sculpture obviously show us a missing part? Perhaps the way you portray this idea will be more subjective. Perhaps it will be very literal. Subtle or not, you decide! All media welcome.

We also provide training, technical assistance and resources to law enforcement personnel and others who investigate crimes committed against children, specifically cases of child sexual exploitation. According to the FBI, in 2016 there were 465,676 NCIC entries for missing children – 10% were from Texas. There are currently at least 45 missing kids in the Dallas-Fort Worth area ranging in all ages. Dallas Edition: Call for Nasty Women Exhibition

This is the Dallas sister of the Nasty Women exhibition launched in New York. It is one of many national exhibitions organized around the demonstration of solidarity among female artists and allies who identify with being a Nasty Woman in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, abortion rights, immigration rights, racial and environmental justice. It also serves as a fundraiser to support organizations defending these rights.

This call is open to Nasty Women Artists of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientations, gender or non-gender identifications, economic backgrounds, immigrants and non-immigrants.

This exhibition will take place on March 3rd, the anniversary of the 1913 Women’s Suffrage Parade on Washington. We hope to honor the struggle of our fore-mothers, while also acknowledging their shortcomings. It is no secret that historically feminism has been plagued by a general white-washing of equality with only the causes of cisgendered, straight, able bodied, white women being worth fighting for. This has been a mistake in the struggle for equality. The Dallas Nasty Women Exhibition encourages explorations of women’s history and women’s rights through all of the intersectional lenses those who identify as women must push through.

100% of proceeds from the sale of artworks will go to Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center. Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center is committed to the prevention of sexual violence in North Texas and compassionately serving those impacted by it. www.dallasrapecrisis.org

March 3, 7 – 9 pm reception and sale

March 4, gallery open 10 am – 2 pm cash/card and carry

All work must be for sale. Any work that does not sell must be picked up by the artist. In an effort to raise the most funds while providing affordable art by great artists, we ask that you price your work no less than $20 and no more than $250.

Due to space limitations, work must not be larger than 12 inches in any direction. Works in any media are accepted (please email us regarding sound, video, or new media). All work must be ready to display (unframed work will be affixed to wall with clips or magnets)

While a submission fee is not required for this exhibition, there is a $5 suggested donation to offset the costs of the exhibition and support the efforts of the Studio, a space dedicated to free artist residencies in social practice and free community programming. Donations can be made here.

How to Submit Your Work:

Submission Forms must be received by February 17, 2017. The work itself must be dropped off at Sunset Studios on Sunday, February 26, between 12-3pm.

By submitting to the Nasty Women Exhibition you are agreeing to allow us to use your name and work image to help promote the exhibition. Two Free Calls for Art from the OCCC: Dia de lost Muertos Altars & La Virgen de Guadalupe

The Oak Cliff Cultural Center is now accepting submissions for the Dia de los Muertos Altar exhibit. Building a Day of the Dead altar is an important part of this popular Mexican tradition. Families build altars weeks prior to the feast day, Nov. 2nd, often having photos and offerings dedicated to departed spirits. Artists are invited to participate by creating their unique interpretation of a Dia de los Muertos altar. Non-profit organizations and schools are welcome to submit as well. Below are a few requirements.

Altars can consist of both traditional and non-traditional mediums, such as projections, paintings, and other mediums. Altar entries must not exceed more than 4ft in width and depth from the wall.

Must include a brief description of what altar will consist of along with a thumbnail sketch of what you envision. Please mention in your description if your altar requires access to power, and if you should require a table.

Submissions are due by October 14, 2016. Selected participants will be notified on October 19, 2016. Submissions and questions can be emailed to Gerardo Robles at Gerardo.Robles@DallasCityHall.com.

Dallas artist and exhibition curator, Jose Vargas, is seeking art entries for the 2016 art exhibition. The show will be presented at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center, a facility of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, from December 2, 2016 to January 13, 2017.

The central theme of the exhibition is the Virgin of Guadalupe, an important and celebrated figure in Latin American religion, art, and culture. Although the symbol of the Virgin of Guadalupe is tightly connected with the history of Mexico, people from many parts of the world have found themselves attracted to the fascinating story of the dark-skinned indigenous Madonna.

The artwork created for this exhibition must depict the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, or must be primarily based on her image. The Curator will not review entries that are exact copies or replicas of the original image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Instead, artists are encouraged to create unique works of art that feature original concepts and ideas, innovative techniques and great imagination. Due to the nature of the exhibition, art that is deemed offensive will not be considered.

Dates of show: Dec. 2, 2016 – Jan.13, 2017
Delivery of artwork: November 19, 2016 (4-7PM)
Reception with the artists: December 3, 2016 (6:00PM – 8:00PM)
Art pick up: January 14, 2017 (1-3 PM)

Art in all media will be considered. Artists may submit entries as prints on paper, or as digital images on a compact disc. Art should be ready for installation at the time. No artwork shall be removed from the exhibition before the closing date.

Submission of entries constitutes agreement to the conditions set forth in this document and in the Policy for Exhibitions of the Oak Cliff Cultural Center.

Deadline for submission of CDs/prints with entries:

Clay – A Tribute to Toby Wallace

October 3 – 31, 2016

The late Toby Wallace was an integral part of the team at the TVAA Downtown Gallery, and at the time of his unexpected death, was the interim President of the Texas Visual Arts Association. Toby was a clay artist who continually strove to create new designs and new glazes for the pots he created,  His work has been and continues to be one of our best selling items at the Gallery.  This show is a tribute to his work as a clay artist and his contribution to the Gallery. We invite all artists who work with clay to submit for this show. We are looking for work that can be wall-mounted or is free-standing as well as work that is best displayed on pedestals.

Please submit up to three entries (jpgs at 72 dpi and no longer than 1800 pixels on longest side) to Curator Jan Partin by September 20th at jparti01@sbcglobal.net. More than one image per piece may be submitted if needed to show details of work.

Reception Sunday, Oct. 23 from 2-4pm.

TVAA Downtown Gallery Plaza of the Americas Suite G207 Box 347 700 N Pearl Street Dallas, Texas 75201 469-569-4580  http://tvaa.org
