Outdoor Painters Society’s Plein Air Southwest Salon

Mike Mahon - Santa Fe Wonderland

The Artists Showplace Gallery is delighted to host one of the premier art events of the season. Plein Air Southwest Salon is a juried competition, exhibition and sale sponsored by the Outdoor Painters Society and showcased every April in Dallas. The annual event seeks to promote an appreciation for the process of en plen air, which is French for “in open air”. Most of the works were completed in a single painting session, painted outdoors on location, and are characterized by the bold use of color, design and the freshness of paint application.

The exhibit runs from April 8 to May 13. The opening reception and presentation of awards will take place on Saturday, April 8, from 3:00 to 6:00. On Sunday, April 9, the gallery will be open from 1:00 to 5:00, with artist demonstrations from 2:00 to 4:00.

Stephen Zhang
In his large-scale watercolors, artist and creative director Stephen Zhang freezes fleeting moments: an old man caught in the moment or intriguing light deep in the forest. He hints at the grave concern that the current state of nature may change permanently. Growing up in China and influenced by Daoism, Zhang feels a special connection with watercolor, its organic process and captivating appearance. Primarily working on large sheets of paper stretched on frames, His work combines influences from both classic Chinese and contemporary arts. Zhang has exhibited internationally and has been featured in international art publications. His work has garnered awards from prestigious art associations including  the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and the American Portrait Society.

Ellen Soderquist’s Life Drawing Workshop 2017

Soderquistlifedrawing

The Artists Showplace Gallery presents…

MARCH 10th & March11th
$220 Life Drawing

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
An effective gesture drawing not only records the necessities of the physical attributes of the model, but also embodies an essence of humanity. Establishing the weight, shape, movement and rhythm of the model’s pose provides a visual armature on which a drawing of the figure can be built. However, when the artist also achieves a certain intangible quality in his gesture drawing that evokes attitude, the drawing can even stand on its own. The thing about a gesture drawing of the human figure that is so intoxicating for the artist is that the flurry of charcoal dust or the tangled lines of graphite can coalesce into a palpable being.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Since 1979, Ellen Soderquist has been a studio artist, a teacher of life drawing and a proponent of the nude in contemporary art. As an artist, Ellen Soderquist creates intelligent and sensuous graphite drawings of the nude human body. As a teacher of life drawing, she advocates that her students learn the role of the nude in the history of art and that they communicate their ideas about humanity through their work. As a lecturer and an author, she addresses the relevance of the nude in shaping the art of a culture and the importance of the nude as an art form.

Out of the Woodwork: Wood Turner Kevin Bassett at Artists’ Showplace Gallery March 12

Out of the Woodwork

Artists’ Showplace Gallery is pleased to exhibit the stunning work of nationally-recognized wood turner Kevin Bassett from March 4 to March 26. A reception to meet the artist will be held on Saturday, March 12, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Bassett’s interest in the art of wood turning evolved from his intensive study of plant pathology in his home state of Colorado, followed by a distinguished 40-plus-year career as a certified arborist.

Wood turning differs from other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool — a lathe — is used to cut and shape the wood to create intricate designs. Working with the lathe allows Bassett to explore and expose the incredible beauty of the inner part of the tree.

He describes his work as a collaboration with nature. “Even though I choose the shape, form and utility of a piece of a tree, ultimately the tree has its own voice. I am only a conduit through which the tree is able to speak.”

Bassett’s artwork ranges from decorative vases to functional items to intricately-laced sculptures. Each piece is one of a kind.
