Although it is child’s play, bubbles reveal the color spectrum that we cannot see. In keeping with Stuart Allen’s exploration with light and color, he has taken another step in presenting the color spectrum by photographing the amorphic shapes against the sky. Each bubble makes visible the color we do not see with the naked eye. Artist reception, Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 5-8 PM. Exhibition will run April 30 – June 18, 2016

Historic Continental Gin Building Opens Doors to Showcase the Work of 40+ Artists

continenalginBWlogo
The Continental Gin Building (CGB) will open its doors to the public Friday, November 6th from 6-10 pm and Saturday, November 7th from 2-8 pm for an open house showcasing the work of 44 diverse artists.
Guests are invited to enjoy abundant wine, treats, and live music by the Felix Flores Band.  The 127-year-old building is known as the oldest art community in Deep Ellum. For almost 30 years the CGB has been the home for a community of diversified artists including: craftsmen, film producers, painters, photographers, designers (clothing, accessories, interior), and more. It has grown to 65 tenants who create and collaborate within the historic walls. They are individual artists, under one roof, inspiring each other through an interactive community.
About the CGB:
For over two decades, artists have occupied the Continental Gin Building, making it one of the oldest creative communities in Dallas. At least twice a year, the studios are open to the public, each Fall and Spring. The Continental Gin Company was built in 1888 by Robert S. Munger, housed in a series of brick warehouses along Elm Street and Trunk Avenue. The company was closed in 1962, as Deep Ellum went through several transitions. In 1982, local real estate developer John Tatum purchased the property and spaces first began being rented to artists, thus establishing the Continental Gin Building as one of the oldest art communities in Dallas. It now houses a mix of accomplished professionals, soon-to-be-discovered and the as-yet undiscovered hopefuls, who are all diligently pursuing their talents whether that be apparel design, graphic design, photography, sculptures, film, painting, glasswork or more.

Stereotropes: Thomas Menikos and Tony Veronese at Mokah

Stereotropes CardFront Final Version

Stereotropes Opening Reception

Mokah Gallery in Dallas, Texas

Stereotropes is a show that takes a lighthearted look into daily narratives influenced by current and nostalgic pop-culture.  Conversations take place in a visual language where voice becomes color as two voices build a new narrative from opinions and memories. On a most basic level the show looks at the relation of tropes, archetypes and clichés as parallels are drawn between subject matters as conversations flow through times of serious discussion, to joking and outright insult wars.  The images presented are created to be viewed with the use of 3D glasses so the viewer can decipher each voice separately along with seeing each image in all its collaborative and chaotic glory.

Reception runs from 6pm-9pm. Thomas Caleb Menikos and Michael Veronese will be giving an artist talk at 7:30pm.

2015 AIA Unbuilt Design Awards

safe_image

As public discourse in Dallas becomes increasingly vital to understanding where we are as a city, and where we want to be, the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects seeks to enable continuing dialogue on important issues between the profession and the community. To this end, AIA Dallas has transformed the 2015 Unbuilt Design Awards program into an interactive event and public exhibition featuring new ideas for the future from the architect’s perspective.

The AIA Dallas Design Awards recognizes outstanding work by Dallas architects, both in the metropolitan area and across the country. The purpose of the awards program is to honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to achieve design excellence.

The 2015 Unbuilt Design Awards are hosted this year by Mokah Gallery in Deep Ellum.  The exhibition will run through July 11, with a closing reception on July 11 from 6-9pm.  The closing will include a discussion with the winning project teams.

Greenway Parks Residence

Architecture
Frank Welch and Associates

Architect Frank Welch designed this modern residence with traditional touches to harmoniously reside in the beautiful neighborhood of Greenway Parks. As requested by the owners, the architecture of the home is clean with straight lines to create a simple canvas for its art and furnishings. Rift-cut white oak was used for all doors, cabinets, and the front sculptural staircase that reflects the owner’s sensibilities. The wood floors are defined by a dark finish termed “Crude Oil” by Welch. The interiors feature beautiful contemporary furnishings and fabrics. Natural and neutral finishes create a backdrop for the client’s prominent art collection, which brings pops of color to the rooms. The floating back staircase is fabricated with cork inset into oak stained steps. Intimate nooks were created for the family’s treasured library of books, as well as for entertaining. A generous kitchen area serves as a gathering place for the family and their guests, who enjoy the clean, contemporary and comfortable design of the home.

Malone Cliff View Residence

Architecture
Booziotis & Company Architects

Malone Cliff View provides a Dallas philanthropist a contemporary aerie with spectacular views overlooking the Trinity River corridor and downtown Dallas. Located on a west Dallas escarpment, the concrete structure rises three stories. The design creates a non-rectilinear building that affords views to the city from all the major spaces. These interlocking areas provide a place for intimate gatherings while still accommodating large parties. Four structural concrete pylons hold the bulk of the small secondary functions while supporting the three primary living zones. Each living zone is capped with a hyperbolic paraboloid shaped concrete roof plane cantilevering out to the north. Clad in stone, the building has a sense of permanence, while significant areas of glass provide amazing views to the north and east. A dramatic circular staircase connects the various living areas on the three floors of the residence.

Meaders Residence

Architecture
Bernbaum / Magadini Architects

Meaders Residence emphasizes distinctive natural elements valued in North Texas. Sixteen large live oaks and the site’s natural beauty have been preserved, and the hardscape includes several stone terraces. Water features include a koi pond that hugs the cantilevered foundation pool court.  Large stone walls frame custom fabricated oversized steel-framed windows that admit natural light to enhance the indoor-outdoor connection. Ceiling heights from nine to nearly twelve feet emphasize an open feeling. Lueders roughback limestone walls along with cabinets, flooring and trim fabricated from rift-cut white oak create a light palette for the interiors. Art and selected furnishings provide accents of stronger color. Interior furnishings are primarily modern, and the owners’ sculpture, painting and photography collections are prominently displayed. The kitchen includes two islands clad in Carrera marble along with an oversized range and other state-of-the-art appliances. The main residence and pool cabana share the site with an extended backyard forming a modern, comfortable and timeless design.

April 17th and 18th
The Continental Gin Building Opens their Doors for
Notable Artists
The Continental Gin Building (CGB) will be having an open house on April 17th from 6 to 10 p.m. and  April 18th from 2 to 8 p.m.
The tenants will open their studio doors and showcase the diverse talents that make them an outstanding community with immense positive impact on the City of Dallas.
The CGB is truly a community of diversified artists, designers (clothing, accessories, interior), craftsmen, film producers, modern to classic painters, photographers, etc… all who create a collaboration of talents.
Participating artists include: Rob Aikey, Diána Antohe, Jay Bailey, Connie Roschlau Ball, Donna Davis Ball, Fannie Brito, Stuart Burne, Alan Cook, Patsi Davila, Alison De Vito, STATUS Design, Bill Planey Graphic Design, Marianna Gargour, Andrea Guay, Anne L. He works with canvases using acrylic paints as well as painting on location to get the best images for his work. Stuart will bring paintings that show the Irish Sea, Virgin trains, Stena Line, Irish ferries and others.
Originally a cotton gin factory built by Robert S. Munger, the CGB was the largest manufacturer of cotton-processing equipment in the United States. In 1982, John Tatum bought the building with the knowledge and vision that art contributes to the economy of communities. The 125 year old building is now known as the oldest art community in Deep Ellum.
The CGB has taken a unique approach by bringing in local and artistic talents. The tenants build masterpieces within the CGB walls. They are individual artists thriving within an interactive community. Under one roof, these tenants have created a symbiotic relationship, helping one another succeed.
Local band Felix Flores, which is a folk, jazz and indie band, will be playing Friday, April 17th on the second floor of the CGB. Their style of music brings a great vibe to all things art. CGB will also be participating in the Deep Ellum Art Walk which will be taking place on Saturday, April 18th.

Known as a ‘hidden gem’ in Deep Ellum, The Continental Gin Building is a community of diversified artists, designers, craftsmen, film producers, modern to classic painters, and photographers, who produce a collaboration of talents.

About the Continental Gin Building:
For over two decades, artists have occupied the 120 year-old Continental Gin Building, making it one of the oldest creative communities in Dallas. At least twice a year, the studios are open to the public, each Fall and Spring. Presently, over two dozen artists occupy the historic building.
The Continental Gin Building is located at 3309 Elm St. Dallas, TX 75226
