Orbital Migration at Cliff Gallery: Reception Dec. 1

November 13 – December 8, 2017–

The Cliff Gallery of Mountain View College Is honored to present ORBITAL MIGRATION, works by TIERRA FIRME.

Through a wide variety of craft media such as basketry, botanical dyes, ceramics, and installation art, Tierra Firme creates a variety of portraits about a personal subject, their home on the TXMX borderlands. Investigating ideas of memory, construction of identity, land, and sky, Tierra Firme reinterprets the narrative of the borderlands through an intimate lens.

The exhibition Orbital Migration draws its name from the idea of the cyclical relationship Latinos have with their homeland, whether emotional, monetary, or through movement. The term is also used in astronomy to refer to a major change of a planet’s orbit around its host star. Furthering the exhibition’s connection to the sky, land, and identity, Tierra Firme is inspired by the panoramic mountain aesthetics of the West Texas region, the tropical deserts of the South Texas Plains, and the civic border landscape.

Artists’ Bio:

TIERRA FIRME is the project-based collaboration of Analise Minjarez & Sarita Westrup. These daughters of the border region also pursue individual artist practices grounded in Fibers + Sculpture.

TIERRA FIRME speaks to their identity as women born and raised on the border of Texas and Mexico. Their project based installation explores issues of duality, authenticity, cultural geography, and migration. Through creating artworks that respond to the physical landscape of the region, TIERRA FIRME reflects on the bi-cultural aesthetics of their border home.

Recently, Tierra Firme was awarded the 2017 Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Fund Award from the Dallas Museum of Art. Tierra Firme has exhibited works at Brick Haus Studios in Denton, TX, Box 13 Artspace in Houston, TX, Pegasus Plaza, Oak Cliff Cultural Center, Latino Cultural Center, and Kirk Hopper Gallery in Dallas, TX. They currently live and work in Denton and Dallas, TX.
