Recipe of the Month
Apples Are Here…
Landscape Pair by Shawn Messenger
Yay, it’s fall, and time for apples!
Nothing better than a good apple eaten out of hand or cored stuffed with brown sugar, butter and chopped nuts, baked and served warm…  Topped with vanilla ice cream.
I recently came across a recipe for Apple Roses that I want to try out.  Looks easy and so pretty!  Oh, and it’s done with puff pastry, another of my favorite things.
This weekend it will be Pork Loin With Apples, Cider & Calvados, like they do it in Normandy in the fall.  (Can do this with pork chops or chicken as well.)
Yum!

Carlyn Ray opening Sept. 16 at JM Gallery

Join JM Gallery Saturday, September 16, from 5 until 8 for our opening reception featuring glass sculpture by Carlyn Ray.

JM Gallery
1722 Routh Street, Suite 106, Dallas, Tx 75201

Acclaimed glass artist Carlyn Ray and her team work in a mysterious medium—molten sand, at the temperature of lava, formed with one’s breath, hand, and gravity into delicate, crystal forms. Glass. It can transmit or reflect light; it can be solid and strong or thin and fragile; it can outlive us for hundreds of years or break in an instant. Formed at volcanic temperatures and blown into beguiling shapes, Carlyn’s glass works capture both the magic of the medium and the passion of its creators. Her distinctive forms include large-scale weavings made from rippling strips of colored glass woven together by metal and wire; illuminated panels; flowing collections of crystal ribbons; vessels; chandeliers; and much more. But no matter the form, each piece is full of light and energy and has the power to transform space with its brilliant, shimmering colors.

Carlyn is the lead designer, artist, and owner of Carlyn Ray Designs. At a young age she discovered an unrelenting passion for glass and a desire to be involved in community art projects. After receiving her BFA from The College of William and Mary, she trained with various master glass artists around the world, including Dale Chihuly, for whom she worked on project management, scheduling, glassblowing, and managing the daily activities in the hot shop. She has also worked at the Corning Museum of Glass, where she worked alongside other master artists creating works and educating the public about glass. Carlyn has now come full circle to build a multi-talented team with a focus on creating large-scale custom projects for and with the community.

ABOUT JM GALLERY // JM Gallery offers works of art on paper and sculptural forms that engage both the eye and the mind. The gallery promotes artists who create smart, visually compelling work and showcases their art in a space that is inviting and accessible. JM Gallery is committed to working closely with artists as they develop their work and careers and to developing lasting relationships with collectors. In collaboration with area schools and non-profits, they enrich the creative community by teaching artists and collectors about navigating the complex world of art.

SiNaCa Studios Announces Call for Artists for Vitro Moda 9

sinacalogo

SiNaCa Studios is conducting an open call for glass artists for Vitro Moda, its ninth annual fundraiser that blends glass and music in a unique event that transforms a local venue into a runway show. This year’s theme, chromesthesia, will explore the connection between sound and color and how it influences artistic expression.

At the February 18 event, couture models will walk the runway showcasing and wearing beautiful, one-of-a-kind glass art pieces created by artists around the country. The featured glass art pieces will be on sale at the conclusion of the show. A silent auction and raffle will precede the show.

Contributing artists are encouraged to submit two to four pieces. At least two pieces should be of equal value and will be chosen by representatives of SiNaCa Studios.

One piece of SiNaCa’s choosing will be available as a 100 percent donation for the silent auction. The other pieces will be included in the runway show and will be available for sale at a 50/50 percent split of the price that the artist sets. One-hundred percent of silent auction proceeds and 50 percent of sales of featured runway pieces will benefit SiNaCa Studios.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, February 1, 2017.

Submissions must be made in .jpeg format to info@sinacastudios.org or in-person at 1013 W. Magnolia Ave., Fort Worth, TX, 76104. All submissions must include a description of the medium, technique, dimensions, retail cost and artist contact information.

Recipe of the Month
Time to Stuff It
Sprig Vessel by Susan Rankin

It’s about time to make up a batch of Stuffed Artichokes

I’m thinking that this weekend  I’ll mix up a big batch of this scrumptious concoction and stuff some artichokes — and maybe some stuffed peppers and mushrooms as well…

We’ve been doing these for years now — they’re a perennial favorite at our house.
And so pretty!  The artichokes look like giant flowers and make a meal all by themselves…
Once baked in the oven, they’re good warm or cold and make great leftovers.

How Will This Work?
Timing & Whatnot….
LAndscape Series, Red Rose with Sunflowers by Shawn Messenger

So this is the plan…
The last week of October we will move to our new digs. (Didn’t we just do this last year?!)  The studio is moving to a new workshop/retail space in Richardson.  The gallery will be moving close by our current location in North Dallas.  (Yes, we’re splitting up — but we’re not breaking up!)

We plan to complete both moves quickly and be back open by the 1st of November.  Classes and production will resume in the new studio space and we’ll be all geared up for the holidays in the new gallery.
If you need something from us during the week of the move, do give us a call and we’ll do our best to get you what you need.

Where Are We Going?
And The New Gallery Will Be…
The Gallery will be moving in with our long time friends at Southwest Gallery, located just a hop skip and a jump away in North Dallas near Inwood & Spring Valley.
Located in the North Dallas Design District, Southwest Gallery is one of Dallas’ oldest and largest art galleries, offering Contemporary, Western, Impressionist, Traditional & Southwest art as well as sculpture, bronzes and antiques.
Bob Malenfant and his staff are remodeling a portion of their 16,000 square foot facility to make us a fabulous new 2,300 square foot art glass gallery space.
We plan to complete our move in one week and will be up and running in the new gallery by the 1st of November.
Lot’s of ornaments and other goodies are on their way to arrive in plenty of time for your holiday gift buying!
After the move our new gallery hours will be Tuesday – Saturday 9 – 6, Sundays 1 – 5.  We will be closed on Mondays.
The new gallery address will be…
Kittrell Riffkind Art Glass
at Southwest Gallery
4500 Sigma Rd (at Welch)
Dallas, TX 75244
We look forward to seeing you there!

As with the gallery, we plan to complete our move in one week and will be up and running in the new studio by the 1st of November.

21st Goblet Invitational and more: art glass at Kittrell Riffkind

kittrelllogo

21st Goblet Invitational
Join Us!
21stgoblet
We hope that you will join us this coming Saturday, July 18th, from 10 – 5:30, for the Opening Reception of our 21st Annual Goblet Invitational.  Enjoy some wine & munchies in our new space…

We will be featuring drinking vessels from over 80 contemporary glass artists — a dazzling array of goblets ranging from functional to fantasy… one of our favorite events of the year!

We’re still receiving late arrivals, but many of them are on our website, so go ahead and sneek a peek….
The exhibit will continue through August 15th.

New Artists
Robin & Julia Rogers…

Red Arborist by Robin & Julia RogersIn a small hot glass studio in Western Montana in 2001, the paths of Julia (Boriss) and Robin Rogers intersected.

Their friendship grew and their glass practices began to overlap. They both became part owners of the studio and worked together, operating the small business and creating glass works.

The couple decided to leave their beloved Montana in 2005 to pursue MFA degrees. They re-envisioned their glass studio and created a trailer-mounted portable hot shop. With their tools, dogs and one year old son, they set out for Illinois. Following opportunities to study and work in glass, their small family has now lived in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Virginia.

In 2010, after nearly ten years of working together and assisting with each other’s work, the duo decided to start creating artwork collaboratively.

Animalia Fantastica is a series of blown/sculpted anthropomorphic glass figures.  Since the advent of human expression, animalia has been a driving source of inspiration. In fact, the oldest cave paintings depict animals and the hunt. This narrative continues inAnimalia Fantastica touching on nourishment and sustainability.

We are delighted to have Robin and Julia’s work in the gallery once again.  Come by and see it, we think you’ll like it as well!

We’re Where?

Kessler Craftsman Classes in Kiln Glass

Kessler Craftsman First Quarter, 2015 Class Schedule

Happy Holidays!
In response to multiple requests, I’m publishing my kiln glass teaching schedule for first quarter, 2015. As you’ll see below, in 2015, there will be two predominant types of classes:
Project based classes in which a student with NO experience/kiln glass skills can come into the studio and choose from a variety of projects, paying only for the project that they choose. As always all instruction, glass, supplies & firing is included in the cost of a particular project!
Classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced students who want to learn a specific technique or skill. Often these classes are taught as “Intensives,” meaning that the student will spend 2-3 full days in the studio/class. This is perfect for students who travel from out of town to study with kiln glass artist Larry Pile.

Class Descriptions & Policies

Kessler Craftsman Open Studio

This is a semi-open format for fused glass students who want to come into the Kessler Craftsman Studios and with a bit of basic instruction, make a fused Kiln glass project.  Students may make a set of 4 coasters ($55), a square sushi plate in various sizes (8″ x 8″ – $65, 10″ x 10″ – $75, 12″ x 14″ – $150), a candleholder/ vase ($65) or sconce ($65).  Cost depends on the chosen project.  RSVP requided (student does not need to have decided what they’ll make).  There will be a general theme for the class, but students may choose to follow or ignore that month’s theme.  Cost for the class includes all materials, instruction & firing.

“Beginner’s Intensive” – Fused Kiln Glass for the Beginner

This is a class for the student with no kiln glass experience.  Learn how to cut and shape glass, understand the principles of glass and heat, learn how to use a programmable glass kiln to fuse, tack and slump glass.  Learn how to shape and finish your pieces.  In the class we will make a series of test tiles/coasters and a final project.  All materials, instruction & firing included in class price.

“Get a Reaction” – Kiln Glass Reactions

For the intermediate/advanced student, this class will teach students how to create/capitalize on fused glass reactions using sulphur-based and copper-based glasses, specialized glasses and silver and copper.  Students will work with System 96 COE glass to create sample sets and then will use their newfound skills to create a 10″ x 10″ square or round plate/sculptural piece.  All materials, including a sheet of pure silver foil & silver slip, included in class price.

Basic Coldworking for Kiln Glass Artists”

Contemporary kiln glass artists understand that great kiln glass pieces don’t stop at the kiln.  Learn to texture, shape, flatten and refine your kiln glass work, turning good pieces into great pieces.  Students will use hand tools and materials and machine tools to refine a glass blank provided by the instructor OR students may bring a kiln glass piece that they wish to refine (no larger than 12″ x 12″ please).  Students will learn the correct and creative use of:  The diamond tile saw, the ring saw/band saw, the wet belt sander, the flat lap wheel, the wet angle grinder, the rock tumbler, the glass grinder and then basic hand tools such as the sickle stone, loose silicon carbide grit, etc.

Sandblasting and Basic SandCarving for the Kiln Glass Worker”

Learn how to set up and use a siphon feed and pressure feed sandblaster to etch, texture, refine and clean up your fused glass pieces, molds, etc.   Students will learn about all equipment, equipment setup, resources, etc and then will learn  how to deep-carve, etch intricate designs into iridized and dichroic glass and will discuss many creative & functional options for using the sandblaster.  Students will make a variety of samples using sandblasting and sand-carving techniques.  Take this class and the Sandblaster will become your favorite coldworking tool!

Recipe of the Month

Deborah’s Chocolate Souffle Pudding

Spotted Rose Breasted Slate Warbler by Shane Fero“Tis the Season for parties and celebrations with friends and family — a time for treasured traditions and extra special goodies to eat.

This year I thought I would share with you a recipe from our good friend glass artistDeborah Wood who hales from the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia. A talented baker, she is known far and wide for her deliciousChocolate Souffle Pudding which she serves friends and family during the holidays and on special occasions.

These souffles call for castor sugar, but not to worry — you can make it yourself or buy it in specialty stores (or online..).  I found mine at Central Market.

Deborah assures me that it is easy and foolproof….  And divinely delicious! I plan to have serve it on Christmas — wish that she and hubby Bruce could be with us to enjoy the day…
