Narrative Threads: The AIDS Memorial Quilt

Narrative Threads: The AIDS Memorial Quilt
presented in partnership with UT Dallas and The NAMES Project
Meadows Gallery, Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, Denton TX
October 7 – December 9, 2017

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a unique work of international arts activism that reflects the worldwide scope and personal impact of the AIDS pandemic. It simultaneously functions as a living memorial, a form of political activism, and an intimate tribute to lives lost, and the largest collaborative artwork in the world. Devastatingly, 49,000 panels currently compose the quilt representing more than 94,000 names. Selected panels will be on rotational view at the Arts Center along with interactive AIDS Quilt Touch kiosk thanks to support from UT Dallas with The NAMES Project . Additional programs and events to be announced.

Throughout Narrative Threads, community members are invited to create quilt squares that document their experience with HIV/AIDS. Participants can either create squares privately and deliver or send them to the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center or make a panel on-site using materials provided by GDAC. At the end of the exhibition, we will assemble the individual squares together and photograph and publish the completed quilt online as a statement of shared memorial, grief and a collective call to action. This project strives to engage and unite the community in an international conversation through meaningful, personal reflections. When combined, the collection of squares will serve to make a poignant statement about the widespread impact of HIV/AIDS.

Instructions for at-home creators:

Your quilt square does not have to follow any stylistic guidelines. You may incorporate text, image, and objects in any way you like. It must, however, be 7 x 7 inches if you want it included in the community quilt. If you are unsure of where to start, you might try considering these questions:

How did you first learn about AIDS? What do you know about AIDS? Do you know anyone who has lived or is currently living with AIDS? What do you want to say to them? How has the exhibition impacted your understanding of AIDS? How can we work together as a community to spread awareness? What steps can we take to help end the stigma surrounding AIDS? Is there more that you want to learn about AIDS?

Drop it off or mail it to the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center at:
Greater Denton Arts Council, ATTN: Education, 400 E. Hickory Street, Denton, Texas 76201
