The Brickyard’s Water Tower Brings Artful Touch to DFW

Dallas-based Billingsley Company is bringing an iconic structure by way of urban art to its new multifamily community, The Brickyard, with the unveiling of its new stain glass water tower. The water tower was designed by Joseph Shortell of Shortell Design, a Dallas-based designer who works in stone, glass, iron and other primary materials, and whose creations have been featured in restaurants, lounges and other locations from coast to coast. Lauren Stout, an independent artist working with Shortell, laid out the color schemes with direction and approval directly from property developer, Lucy Billingsley.

The water tower accompanies other urban-inspired design elements on the property, such as arched windows, brick detailing and old-style painted signs, reminiscent of Brooklyn style-walk ups.

Among the features of the Brickyard Water Tower:

  • Internally lit with 24 LED flood lights
  • Agricultural silo-style metal roof
  • 24 3’x6’ curved panels, each with individual colored acrylic panes in varying shades of yellow, orange, red, blue and green
  • Panel and pane frames made of powder-coated metal to withstand the harsh Texas elements

“We could not be more thrilled with how the Water Tower has turned out,” said Sumner Billingsley, managing partner on The Brickyard project. “I think it fully encompasses the thoughtfulness and unique attention to detail that went into this development – inspired by elements of the past, but infused with the creativity and energy of our community today.”

The water tower sits on the edge of the property – a perfect viewing location for both residents and passersby. The official unveiling and lighting of the water tower was October 5th. Farmers Branch dignitaries and guests attended a lighting party to see the new addition to the property and welcome a local piece of art to the community.

The Brickyard is the first phase of apartments and townhomes in Mercer Crossing, the newest multi-use Billingsley development, located at the crossroads of Interstate 35E, Interstate 635 and President George Bush Turnpike. The Brickyard is a blend of one- and two-bedroom apartments and townhomes that embody romantic industrial architecture with abundant use of brick, metal-framed windows and old-style painted signs on building walls. Residents have been moving into the community since May 2016.

Beautiful Souls: Artwork By Sierra Barnes April 29

Beautiful Souls: Artwork By Sierra Barnes

We are excited to have a brand new artist for this upcoming show.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Sierra Barnes offers the kind of beautiful art that

pairs well with honoring the sacred energy of the feminine. Join us for an

opening reception from 7-10 p.m. April 29 at Art Is Life Studio.
At 19 years old, Sierra is self-taught artist born and raised in Dallas, Texas.

In 2002 she was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma, a type of brain tumor

derived from pituitary gland embryonic tissue. This as well as other obstacles

and challenges in her life have not stopped her from pursuing her artistic passion.

It has instead inspired and motivated her as an artist as well as a person.
“Nobody’s perfect but everyone has beauty within them.

These pieces of art I have created were inspired by my own

struggles and experiences,” Sierra said.

Sierra is also a writer and writes a poem to go along with every single

piece of art she creates. Each of them are hand-written and attached

to the back of the painting.
“This art show is about how we are the souls within us and not just our

bodies,” Sierra said. “We can find beauty within our flaws and

imperfections. We judge one another and we sometimes judge ourselves.”

We look forward to seeing you. There will be light snacks served as well as

non-alcoholic beverages keeping in the studio’s mission of providing a

safe, sober space for individuals in recovery.

Flowers: Isabel Cano Exhibition

black box_Isabel (2) 100

What: Flowers: Isabel Cano Exhibition

currently on display through April 8th

Where: Black Box Performing Arts Theatre, 318 E Hickory St, Denton, TX

Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST) member Isabel Cano, of Denton, currently has an exhibition of six acrylic paintings at the Point Bank Black Box Performing Arts Theatre through April 8, 2016. She has been painting in acrylic for five years and also has experimented with pastel and photography. The paintings on exhibit are from her series “Flowers.”

Cano has been a member of VAST for nine years and served three years on the Board of Directors including a year of service as Vice-president in charge of programs. She has exhibited in a number of the art society’s juried and non-juried exhibitions. She credits the organization with inspiring her to work and develop her skills as a painter.

Artist Statement:

My series “Flowers” is a study in shape, color, light and shadow. I create these paintings to give the flowers a much longer life, in hopes that more people will get to see the one that captivated me. The purpose of the bigger scale is to create an impact that will force as many viewers as possible, to see the beauty that would otherwise go unnoticed.

I create art to share with the viewer a slice of what and how, I perceive my surroundings.

The Black Box Theatre Exhibition is co-sponsored by Denton Community Theatre. Black Box hours are Monday and Wednesday, 1:00 – 4:00 pm and Friday, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm. The art may also be viewed during any of the performances at the Black Box.

3_Tree with yellow fields

In her words:

This exhibition is inspired by architecture & landscape. I work in abstract and realism style. With an architecture background my work is influenced by structure side of it, interested in light, form and color. Realism style influenced by my profession as a Landscape Designer. My paintings are a personal expression of this duality.

My process begins with a series of sketches of landscapes or places or objects. Each composition is enlarged & refined using graphite on canvas. Acrylic colors are used in layers to create different planes, patterns & textures. Coming from India, a country of vibrant colors! I was always inspired by bright, colorful festivals, dresses. I try to capture that vibrancy in my paintings.

Spontaneity, unpredictability and self-discovery in making the art work constantly excites me!

Beginners are welcome!

You may work with abstract or impressionism.

Landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes….
You can learn how to paint it all. These classes are intentionally very small so that I can give individual attention when needed. Each week I will introduce a new lesson on a certain technique, color theory, or a concept of design and will do a class demonstration to help students get started with their weekly assignment. You will be amazed at how quickly you will acquire skills that allow you to paint pictures you can be proud of.
Talent is not required. You need only a willingness to learn and to practice.
Sign up for the 6-week session
To sign up for this Jan./Feb. session, email me or call so that I can put your name on my list.
If you have questions, feel free to call me at any time. If I am teaching, I will get back to you as quickly as possible.

Maureen Brouillette: Abstract Acrylic with Mixed Media June 6 & 7

Abstract Red and Green530

Art Workshops with Maureen Brouillette

Abstract Acrylic with Mixed Media
June 6 & 7, 2015 in Dallas

The goal of this workshop is to experiment, have a good time and create a series of small paintings. All levels are welcome. Bring a friend!

Each day will include a brief lecture, a demo for technique, plenty of student painting time and individual guidance. The workshop will end with a group critique.

We are going to create abstract paintings using color, shape, texture and design to create original artwork. In addition to the items on my supply list I’d like to mention that I have been doing monoprints using a Gelli plate. I am excited to incorporate new elements into my workshop demos.

We can also incorporate found papers into our compositions. This might include letters, postcards, tickets, receipts, old paintings and drawings, rice and tissue papers, candy wrappers, maps, gold foil, patterned paper, labels, graph paper, ledgers, vintage books, engravings, stamps. I usually use black and white copies of my collage elements instead of using the originals.

We will use matte medium for adhesive, your favorite acrylic paints for color, plus anything you like to draw with, such as pencil, ink, charcoal, color pencils, and water soluble crayons to embellish our paintings. I have recently discovered black compressed carbon, water soluble discs at Asel that I absolutely love! They are usually in a box near the cash register at the Asel on Cedar Springs.

Time: 10 am to 4 pm. I will be there at 9:30 so you will have time to get settled. We will break for lunch from noon to 1:00. There are several restaurants close by. A refrigerator and microwave are available if you want to bring your lunch.

Location: Workshops are held at the Artisan’s Studio Gallery at 2825 Valley View Lane, Suite 301, Farmer’s Branch, TX 75234. It is just West of Josey Lane and not visible from Valley View, but is located behind the Fruit Market and Auto Zone.

Fee: $150 for the weekend.

Registration: To register or if you have any questions, please call Maureen at 214-340-6914 or e-mail Maureen. Space is very limited. A $75 non-refundable, non-transferrable deposit is required.

For supply list see http://mbrouillette.com/workshops.html

Maureen also teaches private lessons in both collage / mixed media and traditional acrylic painting on paper and canvas as well as doing private critiques.

Paula Pillow – March 2 demo Transparent Layering with Acrylics

The next Trinity Arts Guild meeting will be on Monday, March 2nd at 7:00 PM. http://trinityartsguild.org

Location: Bedford Boys Ranch, Trinity Arts Guild, 2819 R. D. Hurt Pkwy., Bedford, TX 76095-0671

Paula Pillow will be demonstrating transparent layering using acrylics and her latest development, incorporating gears into her presentation. Paula uses water media to explore images, shapes and patterns. She often starts with the abstract shapes of motion that become the foundation for more realistic images of nature or man-made industrial images. With a background in painting, quilting and fiber art, it is a natural connection for her to strive to infuse a sense of color, pattern and movement in her art. Through her use of transparency she captures an element of the unexpected and explores the visual textures.

Paula has studied art at Texas Christian University. She is a signature member of the Society of Watercolor Artists, the International Society of Experimental Artists, and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. She has been in juried shows in Texas, Louisi- ana, California, Pennsylvania and Florida and won multiple awards. Her work has been published in Mary Todd Beam’s book, The Creative Edge: Exercises to Celebrate Your Creative Self.

-see Paula’s website http://www.paulapillow.com

Paula also teaches at Sparks Studio in Arlington, TX.

Vern Johnson: Abstract Impressionism

Open Prairie

Arlington resident and professional artist Vern Johnson will share his work with the community during the month of January. Mr. Johnson spent 26 years as an “in-house” designer and consultant designer to furniture and product manufacturers in California and Texas. He chose a new career path along with the change of the centuries when he became a fulltime professional artist. “As a full time painter, I am free to pursue my own passions. Free to set my own objectives and solutions without committees.”

“Painting has always been my means of self expression…The most important thing for me about painting is the application of color. There is always a sense of place that sets the context of the painting. I use abstraction including subject matter as a point of reference from which I set the stage with visual elements including color, line, tone, and composition which I use to solicit the viewers attention and participation. My goal is to involve the viewer to compete and personalize the painting within the parameters that I have created.

He has a master’s degree in design and taught for many years at schools such as  Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois and the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Missouri.
