Beautiful Souls: Artwork By Sierra Barnes April 29

Beautiful Souls: Artwork By Sierra Barnes

We are excited to have a brand new artist for this upcoming show.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Sierra Barnes offers the kind of beautiful art that

pairs well with honoring the sacred energy of the feminine. Join us for an

opening reception from 7-10 p.m. April 29 at Art Is Life Studio.
At 19 years old, Sierra is self-taught artist born and raised in Dallas, Texas.

In 2002 she was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma, a type of brain tumor

derived from pituitary gland embryonic tissue. This as well as other obstacles

and challenges in her life have not stopped her from pursuing her artistic passion.

It has instead inspired and motivated her as an artist as well as a person.
“Nobody’s perfect but everyone has beauty within them.

These pieces of art I have created were inspired by my own

struggles and experiences,” Sierra said.

Sierra is also a writer and writes a poem to go along with every single

piece of art she creates. Each of them are hand-written and attached

to the back of the painting.
“This art show is about how we are the souls within us and not just our

bodies,” Sierra said. “We can find beauty within our flaws and

imperfections. We judge one another and we sometimes judge ourselves.”

We look forward to seeing you. There will be light snacks served as well as

non-alcoholic beverages keeping in the studio’s mission of providing a

safe, sober space for individuals in recovery.

Elizabeth Schowachert – “Hidden Voices” February 6th – March 5th

Ancient Whispers 24X18 schowachert 2016

Muzeion Gallery invites you to experience the new encaustic and mixed media series, Hidden Voices, by Texas based artist, Elizabeth Schowachert and to attend the opening reception on Saturday, February 6th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The exhibition runs through March 5th, 2016. Both the opening reception and exhibition are free and open to the public; and the artist will be in attendance.

Elizabeth Schowachert was born and raised in Northern California, and has always had a deep appreciation and affinity with the sea and the natural beauty of the Northern California coastline. Her paintings reflect her deep love of and spiritual relationship with nature. For her, discovery and creative exploration are an essential part of art making. Her work is as much about the process of discovery as it is about the articulation of an idea, a feeling or a place. Creating art is an essential part of who she is and her hope is that her work reflects, her ideas, her passions and the deep spiritual connection she feels to nature. Elizabeth practices out of her studio located in a suburb of Dallas.

Slay The Dragon 2015 Encaustic elizabeth schowachert

In Hidden Voices, the artwork transcribes a language that only the subconscious fully understands, with images that never clearly take shape, but instead layer upon one another to create what cannot be articulated with words. It speaks to the things we hold deep inside ourselves, sometimes to protect, sometimes to forget. It intends to access those deep places within ourselves, that are buried in the subconscious and that flicker at the surface of our memory, providing glimpses into the past experiences that have molded us into who we are.

This exploration of past experiences relates not only to personal identity, but to cultural identity. The voices of the past are expressed in the recent works by the artists through reflections of Meso-American design motifs couple with abstract expressionist mark making. In this way, the artwork draws from both Modernism and from Pre-Columbian art and creates a connection between the past and the present, exploring existential concepts and spiritual revelations. To further explore this profound connection, this showcase of contemporary abstract paintings will be accompanied by a selection of Pre-Columbian sculpture and textile works from Muzeion’s exclusive collection of antiquities, including artifacts from Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru.

3_Tree with yellow fields

In her words:

This exhibition is inspired by architecture & landscape. I work in abstract and realism style. With an architecture background my work is influenced by structure side of it, interested in light, form and color. Realism style influenced by my profession as a Landscape Designer. My paintings are a personal expression of this duality.

My process begins with a series of sketches of landscapes or places or objects. Each composition is enlarged & refined using graphite on canvas. Acrylic colors are used in layers to create different planes, patterns & textures. Coming from India, a country of vibrant colors! I was always inspired by bright, colorful festivals, dresses. I try to capture that vibrancy in my paintings.

Spontaneity, unpredictability and self-discovery in making the art work constantly excites me!

Rodolfo Choperena’s “The Fine Line” opening Nov. 14 at Cinq

Cinq Gallery in the Dallas Design District is proud to announce Rodolfo Choperena’s new solo show, “The Fine Line.”

Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, November 14 from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM, and meet the artist for an enjoyable evening of art.

Rodolfo Choperena’s work is best described as abstracted photography: representational yet complicated by the obscuring and absenting of the subject. By inducing movement and manually manipulating subjects and light sources, Choperena provokes a figurative tableau into abstraction. Every shot, every video, is the evidence of a performance. The acts of montage and manipulation are performed in camera, and movement is his primary performative act. By maneuvering the camera’s placement, aperture and exposure settings in relation to color fields, landscapes, light sources, precipitation and seascapes, the artist’s work pushes the boundaries of perception, creating organic, lyrical free forms. The resultant images are the reinterpretation of the original subject. Striations shift in varying intervals and rhythms, alternately compressing and expanding positive and negative space. However obscured, each composition retains a firm representational vantage point—host to personal objects and scenario manipulations. Each image is a direct reflection of his ever-changing environment.

Natura: Patricia Rodriquez and Dr. Regina Ruiz- reception Aug. 13

The Oil Paintings of Patricia Rodriquez and Dr. Regina Ruiz

August 3-27, 2015 • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Artists Reception  • 7-9 p.m. August 13, 2015

“Natura” is the exploration of nature as envisioned by artists Patricia Rodriquez and Dr. Regina Ruiz through oil paint and brush on canvas. Each artist depicts the natural beauty around them as individual as they are themselves.

Ms. Rodriquez, an Oak Cliff native is a freelance painter and muralist who draws her inspiration from nature with an approach both subconscious and organic. She states that “this body of work is an exploration of Nature as a form of energy. Chaos and elegance coexist as these surreal plant forms take on different arrangements to express the pure energy of life. The work is driven by color and movement. Inspired by Nature and spontaneity and never sketched before hand to embed each piece with fresh energy. www.tigerbeearts.com

Always interested in flowers and fruits, Dr. Ruiz uses them to explore shape and texture, sometimes using the “smallest section of something, anything, a flower, a vegetable, a fruit and then I make it bigger to the point of abstraction not attempting to paint in a realistic style….If I have made a picture and I am happy with it, hopefully it can speak for itself. Each person takes something a little different from the same picture.”

An Evening with the Artists, a reception showcasing Dr. Ruiz and Ms. Rodriguez will be from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, August 13 at Keller Town Hall, 1100 Bear Creek Parkway, Keller TX  76248. The event is free and suitable for all ages. Enjoy refreshments while conversing with the artists and other art enthusiasts.

Vern Johnson: Abstract Impressionism

Open Prairie

Arlington resident and professional artist Vern Johnson will share his work with the community during the month of January. Mr. Johnson spent 26 years as an “in-house” designer and consultant designer to furniture and product manufacturers in California and Texas. He chose a new career path along with the change of the centuries when he became a fulltime professional artist. “As a full time painter, I am free to pursue my own passions. Free to set my own objectives and solutions without committees.”

“Painting has always been my means of self expression…The most important thing for me about painting is the application of color. There is always a sense of place that sets the context of the painting. I use abstraction including subject matter as a point of reference from which I set the stage with visual elements including color, line, tone, and composition which I use to solicit the viewers attention and participation. My goal is to involve the viewer to compete and personalize the painting within the parameters that I have created.

He has a master’s degree in design and taught for many years at schools such as  Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois and the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Missouri.
