The Art Department of the Henderson County Women’s Club was organized in October, 1928, by Mrs. W. R. Bishop. The purpose was to assist in maintaining the Henderson County Memorial Library and to encourage the study of art in Henderson County. This fledgling organization has evolved into the present-day Henderson County Art Club. This year, 2008, is the 80th year that The Henderson County Art Club has been bringing art to the residents of Henderson County and encouraging art appreciation in the Deep East Texas Region.
Over the years the focus of the Henderson County Art Club has continued to be the study of different styles of art and the different mediums with which the different styles can be expressed. Guest speakers have demonstrated oils, oils & waxes, watercolors, pastels, acrylics, etc. with subjects varying from still life to portraits to creature studies. At least twice a year, the artists donate their time and talent to exhibit and offer their art for sale at the upcoming Fall Show and Sale which is soon to be held at The East Texas Arboretum in Athens in September and the Spring Show and Sale held at The Cain Center in April. Many of the art work which will be exhibited has won awards and ribbons at various other shows in the area such as The Texas State Fair Art Competition in Dallas and The East Texas State Fair Art Competition in Tyler as well as national competitions such as The Daughters of the American Revolution National Art Competition.
Meetings are held on the Second Tuesday of the month at The East Texas Arboretum at 10:30am and on alternate months at 7:00pm at The First United Methodist Church at Lovers Lane and College Streets in Athens. All artists and art connoisseurs in Henderson County and the Deep East Texas Area are encouraged to join The Henderson County Art Club and to attend The Fall Show and Sale in September at The Arboretum and The Spring Show and Sale in April at The Cain Center.
