Society of Watercolor Artists is beginning the new membership year with a pizza party/new member orientation/meet and greet! Normally we meet the 3rd Monday each month in the Everett Building at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Camp Bowie and Montgomery Streets. However, with Martin Luther King Day we have a conflict. Our meeting has been rescheduled for the second Monday, 14 January. The pizza party begins at 6pm followed by our regular meeting and demonstration by Michael D. Holter on "Portraits in Color" using Graham Watercolors. We ask attendees to bring something to share with the pizza---a side dish, dessert, pop/tea.

Meetings are held at the University of North Texas Health & Science Center, 3500 Camp Bowie at Montgomery St., Fort Worth, 76107, Everett Hall-Research and Education Bldg., 1st Floor. Our website is www.swa-watercolor.com which has our January newsletter as well as information on our programs and upcoming exhibitions and workshops. We welcome new members and guests.

    ArtTreks – Tuscany, Italy

Plein Air Painting & Photography Workshop

    Sept. 6-14, 2013

Led by Niki Gulley & Scott Williams

Early Registration Deadline for a $500 Savings: Jan. 11

    Final Registration Deadline: March 1

Join us once more as our path takes us to the medieval towns, cypress tree-lined roads and glorious sun drenched splendor of the rolling hills that are Tuscany in the fall. Whether you are a painter or photographer, this unique workshop has been designed to allow you to hone your skills and expand your creativity, all while you further your artistic voice. Choosing which aspect interests you, we will help guide you to capture the architecture and breathtaking vistas flooded with their extraordinary quality of light, on either canvas or film.

Imagine the inspiration derived from strolling the narrow cobble streets of the hill towns or taking in the panoramic views from their outer walls as the sun sweeps across the landscape spread out before you. Start your own renaissance by standing in the shadows where the masters once painted, all while experiencing the grandeur of Tuscany first hand. Capture the rich fall colors offset against cobalt blue skies, the rows of earth-hued vines, ripe with their succulent grape harvest, all while being warmed, literally, under a Tuscan sun.

Tuscany’s warmth is in more than the countryside, it’s within its people as you will discover while sampling the region’s abundant wines, savory fruit and amazing varieties of cheese. There is nothing like getting to know a culture and experiencing a sense of place. It is a journey for the senses, not only visually and intellectually, but for the palate as well.

Niki will conduct the Plein-Air Painting Workshop from different picturesque locations daily, teaching through a combination of demos, discussions, assistance and critiques. Sessions will be broken into different morning and afternoon locations, with plenty of time in between for shopping, sightseeing or to dine al fresco for a leisurely lunch.

Scott will take the photographers on a daily walking tour through the winding streets of the hills town and into the countryside surrounding them. You will have the opportunity to experience Tuscany through your lens as Scott guides you to use your camera to define what you see while achieving your own artistic vision. As with the painters, there will be daily destinations with time allowances for exploring on your own.
Splash Design Agency is putting on a art showing for local upcoming artist in the DFW area. We plan on having a large turnout. This will be an awesome opportunity for those who want to sell their artwork or get their name out there. We would love to have a variety of art types including but not limited to: glass work, paintings, photography, and sculpting. Please have a complete collection ready including 5 or more pieces. The registration fee is $50. If interested, please email us at cak@splashdesignagency.com http://splashtheweb.com/

Creative Arts Center Classes resume in January

Got an old toaster you'd like to part with? With an eye for recycling and repurposing found objects and materials, the Junk Sculpture Class will inspire and assist students in making anything they would like to make. Often times junk will suggest new uses by form or imagination. From the purely artistic, to decorative, to practical and useful items, students will be encouraged to make a creative object from junk. Cardboard, wood, metal, plastic….high tech and low tech and any combination in between. We will encourage a pseudo-post-apocalyptic approach to repurposing and creating. Flea markets, dumpsters, Mom's attic, woods, pastures and streams are a great place to find usable items. The Creative Arts Center will furnish basic materials for construction, such as hot glue, cold glue, nails, screws, bailing wire and tools for student use. Wine bottles, bird houses, winter wreaths, flower containers, hat racks, jewelry, fine art collage or just good old fashioned bizarre are just some of the things students might find fun to use in the Junk Sculpture Class! Time: Saturdays in January from 10 to noon. Call the Creative Arts Center and sign up today. The cost is $50.
