EXPLORE COLLABORATIVE POSSIBILITIES IN THE ARTS

The Greater Denton Arts Council presents Ekphrasis: A Collaboration Among the Arts.

This inaugural symposium has a special focus on collaborative possibilities in the arts. It is designed to discover and explore the artistic impact when intertwining the disciplines of visual art, dance, music, and the written word. It is aimed at those with an interest in and vision of the significant relevance that artistic collaborations and interdisciplinary approaches can have throughout the community. The symposium will be held October 11 – 13, 2012 at the Center for Visual Arts.

Ekphrasis (from the Greek) is generally considered to be an experience in which one medium of art attempts to relate to another medium by defining and describing its essence and form. Through this process the artworks, in combination, take on even greater relevance. Almost any artistic media may be the subject for this type of expressive collaboration.

Thursday, October 11^th, evening is free and open to the public. Festivities will include a reception and book signing for Passion, Art, Community: Denton, Texas, in Word and Image, a reading by 2010 Texas Poet Laureate karla k. morton, and a chance to discuss artwork with the artists.

Friday, October 12^th, will feature several informative speakers, including:

• Pat Porter, former CEO North Texas Business for Culture and the Arts - Arts Advocacy/Cultural Tourism
• Michelle Kraft, Ph.D. - Art and Communities/Arts Education: Interdisciplinary Connections - The Role of Narrative in Community-Based Education
• Martha Peters, Public Art Director, Arts Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County - Public Art/Public Policy
• Donna Howell-Sickels, Cowgirl Artist - Arts and Heritage
• Craig Schaefer, Associate Executive Director, Membership, Marketing, and Development, National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame - Arts and Heritage
• Honor Moorman - Education/Interdisciplinary Connections

The Friday evening session will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Center for Visual Arts. It promises to be exciting, with readings from eight Texas Poets Laureate, including Jim Hoggard, Jan Seale, Cleatus Rattan, Larry Thomas, Alan Birkelbach, Paul Ruffin, Dave Parsons, and karla k. morton.

The symposium will conclude on Saturday morning, October 13^th. It will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a Potpourri of Arts, a reading by karla k. morton, and a performance by Carol Lynn Mizell ofMake It Red and a work commissioned specifically for the event that features music and dance.

Cost:
Thursday:   free and open to the public
Friday:        $50 for a full day (workshops and evening event)
                   $25 student rate (workshops and evening event)
                   $10 evening event only
Saturday:   free and open to the public
