The University of Texas at Dallas Visual Arts Building Presents

Strip:

A group exhibition showcasing artists who utilize various techniques in their art-making practice

Lisa Cardenas
Lillian Love Kennedy
Katherine Jin

Visual Arts Building Main Gallery is pleased to present Strip, a group exhibition of combined media works, painting, photography and video installation. In this exhibition, each artist utilizes her own special technique to produce photographic based artworks. Artists use both modern digital tools and old proven techniques categorized as “alternative processes” to distinguish the final outcome. Lisa Cardenas’s hand-coloring photographs of her paintings command attention as she manually adds pigment to a print, is almost as old as photography itself. Using various materials besides brushes, she creates abstract mixed-media images of intense color, and multiple textures. Her goal is to create an emotional bond with the viewer.

Lillian Love Kennedy’s photographic prints are distressed to create a sense of movement in each piece. The addition of found objects adds depth to each photograph as well as collaging the objects on top of the photograph giving it multiple layers of depth and realism to an otherwise static image.

Katherine Jin's Video Installation - Dorothy’s Mirror is an experimental digital video installation piece that expresses the ineffable by remixing found footage as raw material. In this work, the image is transformed into a conceptual framework that deconstructs and reconfigures found cinematic footage.

In order to master these skills, each of the artists demonstrates the virtues of perseverance and a passion and commitment to the photographic medium. In fact, each artist has been open to many hours of experimentation, and each is receptive to innovation.

Opening reception with the artists is on Friday, June 29, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The exhibition will continue through Saturday, July 14.
