DALLAS, March 9, 2010 – Reflecting the cultural and ideological inspiration of the Dallas art scene, the 7th Annual Hecho en Dallas juried exhibition features professional local artists at the Latino Cultural Center from March 11 through April 24, 2010.
This year, the Latino Cultural Center received a record number of entries from 138 DFW artists – the most ever to submit for Hecho en Dallas. Each of the 38 selected artists uses different media – from sculpture to photography – to touch on political, social and personal concerns. For example, Marian de Lefeld presents Pequeñas Injusticias (Small Injustices), an oil on fabric painting pointing to the relationship between petroleum and poverty in her native country of Venezuela. “[This painting] exudes a hard reality of my homeland,” de Lefeld states. “Indifference is not an option. I
feel compelled to raise awareness on this important, yet profoundly overlooked issue, through research and exploration of paintings.”
The exhibition was conceived by the Latino Cultural Center in recognition of the talented pool of artists whose creative endeavors give vitality to the cultural movement in Dallas. This year’s jury was composed of Tomas Bustos, sculpture instructor at the Creative Arts Center of Dallas and founder of the Association of Latino Artists and Studies (ALAS); Cristina B. Medina, professor of visual arts and humanities at Mountain View College; and Gabrielle Castañeda Pruitt, owner of the 14th Street Gallery in Plano.
