Reflections – Exhibition description by Suzanne Perez, Art Historian, TCC NE campus, Hurst, TX, 76054
Landscape. The very word conjures up a myriad of expectations and connotations in the arts. It is rarely equated with the unassuming, overlooked areas of landscape—places where adjectives like sublime, majestic, grandiose do not normally apply. Yet, from these types of places, come intensely personal and considered evocations of home, family, and memory. Sarina Fuhrmann creates American landscapes that intertwine not only a topographical “American-scape” but also the mythic and eternal sense of place. Fuhrmann’s imagery, though stripped of identifiable markers, is understood through the shared experience of driving past a plowed field or farmhouse. It is decidedly that narrow stretch of land, remote, isolated, and removed from the urban setting, that captures the artist’s attention. Here, the place where memories collide—home and land, is where the artist alludes to a certain intuitive sensibility of the landscape. Fuhrmann focuses our attention on the places where our eyes tend to avoid, the places that are uniquely reflective of the American landscape in their overlooked and undervalued majesty.
