The January Southwestern Watercolor Society Program Features Canson and Arches Products:

Lon Dekkers is a local artist and represents Canson and Arches products. Lon will bring us information about the latest products from both Canson and Arches as well as a short history on these papers which have been made for more than 500 years.

We will learn how Arches paper is made and why it is a superior paper. Lon will tell us how to know the characteristics of any paper before we buy it and show us samples of various papers from both Canson and Arches.

Come learn about the newest papers from Arches and Canson as well as free samples of the latest stuff. Lon will be able to answer all your questions about why papers take paint differently, why one weight of paper may be a better paper for your style of painting. Mr. Dekkers also plans on handing out a number of prizes so you won’t want to miss the program.

James R. Spurlock will give a demonstration on drawing faces at the next members meeting of the Irving Art Association on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7pm at the Jaycee Park Center for the Arts. For directions, see the website at irvingart.org.

From his bio: James R.Spurlock has painted and sculpted his way to a very fulfilling niche for himself in the art world. Today he is a teacher as well as an artist who passes on his experience in art  to many seminar and private students across the country. As a bronze sculptor, he has not limited himself to just life sized memorial busts but continues to sculpt bronzes that portray what life means to him and the clients that he 'speaks' for. Such is an artist's passion.  Color, value, drawing and edges,..."art is just a series of adjustments...and Life is Art."  James is mostly a self taught artist but one of the people he gives credit to for most of "the good stuff" he knows about his art is the consummate master artist of Carthage, Missouri, Bob Tommey.  What a mentor this man and artist has been to many of  "the big guys" in art today.  He started about half of all the good art shows, art organizations and an art institute or two. He is one of the very best painters there is!  Thank you, Bob Tommey, from all the artists you have helped down through the tough years to this very day!

    Wednesday, October 10, 2012

    Becky Parks

Becky has always been interested in oil painting, art and architecture, but “life” put her ambitions on hold until recently retiring. Now numerous travels to Europe have enabled her to acquire the true feeling of Provence and Tuscany. Enjoying the same light in the south of France that drew the masters such as Monet, Cezanne, and Renoire, she captures the brightly painted shut- ters, the lavenders fields and the sunflowers of that special area. The medieval villages of St Paul de Vence, Gourdon and Eze to mention a few, offer many architectural opportunti- ties for stunning paintings. Had she been born in another time she would have designed the medieval villages of France, but now recreating their distinct beauty on canvas is her way of preserving the past as well as her holiday memories. Being fluent in the

French language has been a huge benefit while traveling throughout France and Europe.

Becky teaches a weekly class in the Dallas area and gives demonstrations and workshops throughout the US and France. Becky frequently conducts a 2 morn- ing workshop at Lavendou Bistro Pro- vencal which includes a specialy pre- pared lunch.

She had the opportunity to move her first studio/gallery in the Bishop Arts District to Dragon Street in the Dallas Design District where she currently runs Mary Tomás Studio Gallery. The gallery serves as her painting studio and a place where a selected group of fine artists showcase work. She encourages the creative spirit in everyone and believes that artists are one of the most important voices to be heard in our society.
