Art News DFW has had enormous growth since it was first established in 2006. This site (and the Nucleus CMS platform) has served us well, but it’s time for an update with a new style and more features.
So at nearly our 6,000th posting seven years later in January of 2013, we are switching to the WordPress platform. We will continue to bring you news of North Texas area art and artists. We will continue our philosophy of service to local art groups and artists.
Our new URL is ArtNewsDFW.com. Many of the latest records have been transferred to this site, but we will keep this old site as an archive.
We will continue to add new features and tweak the appearance of Art News DFW on the new site. Look there for future announcements and updates.

These two interior designers [really] need your help. For the past three weeks, they've donated their time and mad design skills as competitors in the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity Design Duel challenge. Now, it’s up to the public to see which designer is the 2012 Design Duel Champion.
The contest pairs two local interior designers with two deserving Dallas homeowners. This year, Royeni Tjoa and Ayla Hawley’s homes have gone from dated to renovated, thanks to Carolina Gentry (Pulp Design Studios) and Breck Woolsey (Breckinridge Taylor). Carolina and Breck were each given just three weeks and $3,000 worth of materials from Dallas Habitat's ReStores to transform Royeni and Ayla’s space.
This week is the designers’ final week of work, and beginning November 6, they’ll be campaigning for votes on www.designduel.org (you can view before/after photos here to help with your decision). Vote daily until November 12. The designer/homeowner pair with the most votes will get 20 points toward their final score.

An opportunity in website naming is coming soon in 2013: the new Top Level Domain (TLD) called ".ART". The new address has the potential to become the gathering spot for art-related sites. Imagine your own website with "YourName.ART".
The popular artists' website DeviantART is asking for your help in becoming the manager of the upcoming domain through its new subsidiary DAdotART. Other potential .ART registry applicants:

Chapter 3 of Chapman Kelley's Memoirs in now available on the Dallas Art History Blog at dallasarthistory.com.
In the first two chapters of his memoirs, Kelley tells of his early life, training and extensive preparation for a life as a painter and vital force in the Renaissance years of the Dallas art world, the 1950s and 1960s.
In chapter 3 we learn of the successes of his students and the beginning of the James H. Clark art collection and the inception in Dallas of "The Troubles," as the Irish term their ongoing problems and struggles.

The Chicago Wildflower Works 1984 - 2004 has become known literally throughout the world. Its author Chapman Kelley says, "Unfortunately, lost in all of the legal publicity generated by our federal artists' rights lawsuit, is that many people are not aware of its artistic and environmental significance." Kelley's collaboration with Dr. Thomas Jefferson Allen and other scientists have allowed his projects to have a continuous display of wildflowers throughout the seasons without the use of a regular watering regimen, except rainwater and without fertilizers or insecticides.

The board of directors of La Reunion TX, an emerging artists residency program in Dallas, has announced the appointment of Catherine Horsey as executive director of the nonprofit organization.
La Reunion TX (LRTX) was founded five years ago to support artists and their creation of new work by providing a place of retreat from their everyday lives. For the last four years, the group has operated out of a forested 35-acre tract in north Oak Cliff, working in collaboration with such groups as the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Independent School District, the Dallas Art Dealers Association and the Deaf Action Center, as well as numerous independent artists, to create and exhibit art on and from the site. A walk along the trails now reveals a series of ephemeral, thought-provoking art pieces made from materials found on site, designed to enhance their natural surroundings.
The group is now prepared to enter a second phase that will fulfill its mission: to create an on-site residency. With best use of existing resources in mind, LRTX will undertake to rehabilitate two existing, now-derelict structures for studio and residence space.
Horsey’s role is to facilitate the transition between the earlier, primarily programmatic phase and the group’s current plans. A veteran nonprofit manager, Horsey’s background includes real-estate development, green building policy development, sustainability education, and building rehabilitation. She was long-time executive director of Preservation Dallas and worked on planning for the residential development Urban Reserve and the Trinity River and Dogwood Canyon Audubon Centers. She has been a geologist and a master naturalist and has been recognized by Preservation Dallas and the U.S. Green Building Council for her work in the realm of sustainable building practice.
“Many elements of Catherine’s varied background and knowledge make her the right person at the right time for LRTX,” says Jessica Stewart Lendvay, president of La Reunion TX. “We look forward to working with her to make the artists’ residency aspect of our mission a reality.”
The La Reunion TX site is privately owned and open to the public only by appointment. For more information, see www.lareuniontx.org or email info@lareuniontx.org.

An Annual Letter from the Executive Director
and President of the Creative Arts Center of Dallas

Our mission is to provide a nurturing environment for people to discover, develop and express their artistic visions. Ourvision is to create a place where community arises as we transform the ordinary into the extraordinary through creative experiences.
Thank You for Your Passion!
Enrollment, Membership & Revenue Up at CAC
We are all about creative learning at CAC and we are delighted that you are sharing our journey. Over the past two years during the economic crisis, we have seen many professionals redirect their careers into the arts. What may have started as an opportunity for the unemployed or underemployed to stay occupied, or for others, to relieve stress from managing many work projects that used to be handled by co-workers, has turned into to a full fledge DIY movement. At CAC, we see many people who have discovered latent or dormant artistic ability. Professional artists already established in one medium are learning about other mediums. And others are happy simply creating art for their friends and family.

The Visual Art League of Lewisville Artist of the Month is Ken Adair.
What began as a child's hobby turned into a way of life for Ken. Originally planning on a career in biology or zoology, his interest in drawing and painting became his passion and his ultimate career. He has a bachelor's degree with a double major in fine art and history with a minor in education. He also has a master's degree and additional certification in Advanced Placement Art Education. He had a thirty year career of teaching art in public schools in the DFW area.
Abstract and non-objective art are Ken's favorite themes in his art.
In addition to showing his works in the Visual Art League of Lewisville Gallery, he is also showing at the Grapevine Main Street Art Gallery, 121 S. Main Street in Grapevine.
The Visual Art League of Lewisville Gallery is located at 701 S. Stemmons Fwy., #115 in the Lewisville West Shopping Center, west of 1-35 between Main Street and Fox Avenue. The Gallery hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2-6.

The
Visual Art League of Lewisville Artist of the Month is David Mask. Mr. Mask is our President for 2008. He was such a great President in 2007, we didn't want to let him go. He was gracious enough to take the reins again this year. He was also on the VAL Board for two years.

Visual Art League of Lewisville artist, JoAnn T. Vincent is our Artist of the Month for July. She has been a member of the League for many years and has been a volunteer in many stations.
Representational fine art in oils is the best way to describe JoAnn's work. "I think I've tried every type of art I had any interest in and in the end I was happiest doing Representational work with a touch of Impressionism the best. I have to be able to recognize the object I'm painting before I'll call it Art. I know that's not the way a lot of people think today but I have to do what I am comfortable with and what I believe in.
I began painting with oils when I was in high school in the 50's. My art teacher supplied me with all the things I needed and after one try I was hooked on oils forever. After graduation I went on to study with many well known teachers in the art world. Ann Templeton, Kevin Macpherson, Lee Rommel, JoeAnna Arnett, -the last three were in Santa Fe and Ann was in Lubbock. Also attended Valdes Art School and 3 colleges. While we lived in Santa Fe people came from all over the world to buy art and it was easy to sell paintings while we lived there. My collectors were in TX, MT, NM. OK, MN. and Japan."

La Reunion was recently pledged $4800 by 8 generous donors to kickstart the 'Art Barn'. La Reunion's purpose is to build a green, sustainable residential art facility on a 35 acre piece of property in Oak Cliff. Before that goal can be reached, the group plans to go ahead and fullfill the 'residency' part of the mission by utilizing a furnished, two-bedroom rental home with a three level barn out back as studio space. In order to do that, they need approxomately $10,000 more dollars to start. For how to donate and more details on the Art Barn project, see the La Reunion website:

Irving Art Association has had two workshops cancelled due to poor participation. We have spoken to other associations and artists and they indicate that their organizations are having the same difficulties. Can anyone out there give us some information as to how they are handling the workshop participation issue or if they are not having a problem, please share the reason why. Our next workshop scheduled is Francys Flanagan and I really hope we get a good response. Check out our website for the information on her workshop at IAA. www.irvingart.org
