Southwestern Watercolor Society presents a JANET WALSH Workshop

Strong design and negative painting, the focus of Janet Walsh’s workshop

A Janet Walsh workshop offers a unique opportunity for beginners as well as advanced painters to grow as artists. Watercolor and still life are used as “tools” to enter into the creative process.

She begins the process each day with “warm-up” exercises, which provide an opportunityto become centered and to open creative blocks.

Using common objects and architecture as “live models”, she shares the thought processes that go into creating a setup. Continuing with a “hands on” approach, she guides students to consider value, shape, size, color, rhythm and composition in setting up their own individual scenes.

Individual help ensures that each artist can accomplish what they want and encourages the individuality of each person’s artistic vision.

Janet will also give a free demonstration at the SWS meeting on April 11 at 7pm. Visitors are welcome. For directions, see the SWS website:

To register for her workshop, contact Mary Treadwell at A $50 deposit will hold your place.

Articrafters will be hosting an inexpensive workshop on the Japanese technique of marbling using floating inks on water. Instructor will be Sharon Giles. It's a great introduction to marbling for a beginner. The workshop will be held at Eclectic Expressions Gallery in Arlington from 1-4pm. To reserve a spot, please email

Suminagashi is an old Japanese technique using sumi inks floating on water (instead of on a gel, such as gum tragacath, methyl cell, etc.) . We will also experiment with other inks, watercolor and acrylic. The instructor will bring enough rice paper for all to use, as well as pigments and other supplies.

Supplies: Bring some newspaper and paper towels to place wet papers onto for drying, plus an apron or smock to protect your clothing. You can also bring other absorbent papers such as cold-pressed watercolor paper, copperplate paper or Japanese papers to try out. Papers with coated or shiny surfaces won't work (or too sized or buffered either). Also your favorite watermedia pigments if you want to experiment (not all will float, even with oxgall or photoflow added).

Cost: $5 to cover the studio space, plus an optional donation of $3 to cover supply costs will be appreciated.

You can find many instructional videos on Suminagashi on - a sample:

Artists' Showplace Gallery presents

An Exhibition of Watercolor & Photography

by the father/son team of

Herb and Stephen Reed

Opening Reception: Friday, August 12, 2011, 6-9 PM

Live music, food, wine and art

Music by: Paul Utay & Jazz After All

Exhibit runs through the Month of August in the Artists' Showplace Gallery

Gallery hours: 10 AM to 6 PM Tuesday through Saturday

A past president of the Southwestern Watercolor Society, Herb Reed is active in a number of local watercolor activities.  One of his loves is plein air painting.  Since he retired from the corporate world, he has studied with a number of noted watercolor artists, including Naomi Brotherton, Tony Couch, Jerry Stitt, Joseph Zbucvic and Sterling Edwards.  Many of his paintings are landscapes and cityscapes, exploring the effects of early and late light through transparent watercolors.
Steve Reed has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years and is currently the photographer for the advertising department of the Dallas Morning News.  He is also active in photographing high-end homes for local realtors.   In his fine art photos, he favors unusual viewpoints of common subjects, particularly food and drink.
