Plein-Air Painting & Photo Workshop Taught by Scott Williams & Niki Gulley

Santa Fe, New Mexico August 7 -13 / 2011

There is something about Santa Fe that has drawn artists there for decades, the Light. The clean pure radiant quality of the sunlight bathes the region in a glow that makes colors come alive and adds a richness to the surroundings. This is the landscape that inspired Georgia O’keeffe and Ansel Adams, now it’s your turn. This is one of those places that allows you to witness nature’s staggering beauty amid a setting straight out of the old west. Its location affords the opportunity to capture everything from desert to mountain and from rivers to pueblos. Along with its ideal climate and abundance of natural settings, it makes New Mexico an artist’s paradise.

Niki will conduct the Plein-Air Painting Workshop from different picturesque locations daily, teaching through a combination of demos, discussions, assistance and critiques. Sessions will be broken into different morning and afternoon locations, with plenty of time in between for shopping, sightseeing or for a leisurely lunch.

Scott will take the photographers on a daily tour where you will have the opportunity to experience Santa Fe through your lens as Scott guides you to use your camera to define what you see while achieving your own artistic vision. As with the painters, there will be daily destinations with time allowances for exploring on your own.

Society of Watercolor Artists Spring Paint-out at Lake Weatherford

Colleen Ericson has volunteered to host our spring “Plein Air” gathering at her lake house May 1. There is a flyer in the paint-out section of our website with a map. This is an opportunity to visit a unique place, and share an afternoon with your associates. The residence is on the west shore of the lake with several docks, boats, and plenty of wildlife. Fair weather would be a good thing, but otherwise there are some sheltered options. The trip is about a 20 minute drive from the west side of Fort Worth...I think you’ll agree that it’s a pleasant drive. There will be a variety of beverages in a convenient location. The Ericksons are planning to put their smoker to use and provide the meat...this is a “Pot Luck” dinner so please bring a dish. The plan is to eat about 4:00. It would be a good thing to bring your lawn chair. This is a great place to sketch, paint, photograph, take a hike or just relax and enjoy the spring. A call or e-mail to Colleen or me if you plan to attend would be appreciated. We hope to see you there...

Perhaps you’ve seen them around town or in the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens or in the tour of the Hidden Gardens – oil and acrylic painters, water colorists, and pencilists, all en plein air (that’s a French expression for “in the open air”). These artists may have been from P.A.I.N.T. (Professional Artists in North Texas), a group of 15 artists who make a weekly practice of painting out of doors.

Earlier this year P.A.I.N.T. organized as a formal group to display and market their work after many years of painting together. Although the artists are all from the North Texas, many are represented nationally in shows and galleries. Their subjects are primarily landscapes and botanical subjects, and the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens is a favorite venue; yet these artists are accomplished in still life and figurative works, as well. The members of P.A.I.N.T. are: Ann Hardy, Arlene Butterworth Taylor, Beverly Richmond, Bonnie Dunn, Cecilia Robertson, Cheri Irwin, Claudia Davis, Frances White, Irma Ward, Jan Bateman, Paula Robinson, Shirley Kinworthy, Tendaris Walling, Tom E. Kellie, and Tosca Engisch.

P.A.I.N.T. will exhibit from November 16, 2010 through January 15, 2011. See a sampling of their talent while enjoying a delicious meal in the ambience of The Gardens Restaurant. For more about the group, contact Irma at irma700@tx.rr.com.

PLEIN AIR PAINT OUT AT DESOTO PIONEER DAYS

The City of DeSoto and the DeSoto Historical Foundation are proud to announce that the renovations and restorations at the Historical Nance Farm are complete. To re-introduce the Nance Farm to the local citizens and artists, they are sponsoring a "Pioneer DaysCelebration" on April 28.Besides all the activities associated with pioneer days activities, there will be artists on site doing their thing - "PLEIN AIRE".

All artists are invited to attend and paint for the day. This will be a great opportunity to see the 'new' face on Nance Farm and the period activities of the day.

As a matter of interest, the DeSoto Art League was organized at a meeting of about 50 artists at the Nance Farm in January 1981.

Please consider coming out to paint at the Farm that day. This is a casual affair, no prizes, nojudges, just opportunity for some great scenes. Cold refreshments for the Artists will be furnished.

Let Ken Reese know if you plan to attend so appropriate plans can be made for your participation. Contact Ken at 972-217-1546 or ken_reese@prodigy.net.

The Farm is located at 1325 Greenbrook Drive in the Mantlebrook edition, DeSoto, Texas 75115. (West off Hampton road at first red light north of Pleasant Run Rd.)

Because Nance Farm is located at 1325 Greenbrook Drive in the Mantlebrook subdivision, parking is not allowed at the farm.  When you come to the festival, park at Town Center and catch the special Nance Farm hay wagon or shuttle buses for the short ride to the farm.  Admission is free but you'll want to bring some cash for the games and food.   For more information on the Family Farm Festival, contact Marikay Dewberry at 214.532.5902 or dewkraft@swbell.net.

Always popular with our member, we are happy to report that Cecy recently won the Best Realistic Landscape Award in the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society(NOAPS) "Best of America" exhibit that's going on right now.

Biography
Inspired by the Outdoors
Since a young child, Cecy Turner has loved the outdoors. “As a child, I would rather be outside playing than inside doing anything.” When Cecy joined the Outdoor Painters Society in 1996 and began entering a few plein air events, her love for painting outdoors was reinforced and her love for the outdoors since a child was carried forward in a new way. Cecy believes that her outdoor painting has been a milestone in her career and helped her painting more than any workshop or class she has ever taken. “It‟s such a challenge to find a scene to paint, simplify it, capture what you want to say about the scene within a „time limit‟ before the light changes too much and try to make it a good painting that reads like you want. In plein air events, you also add being in competition with other plein air painters in the group.”

Ghost Ranch is the area where Georgia O'Keeffe lived during the most recognized era of her life and art. The Georgia O'Keeffe Landscape Tour is our optional field trip during the week. We will be transported, practically following her footsteps, to the very places where she painted. We can look at the landscape while at the same time referring to a copy of her artwork.

There is a schedule, but plenty of flexibility. There are wonderful opportunities for plein air work. Our group meeting room is available for Darla's daily presentations and demonstrations and for those who prefer the comfort of working indoors.

Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu is 65 miles NW of Santa Fe. The Ghost Ranch folks will provide our lodging and 3 hot meals daily! We simply go and enjoy. Bring your favorite materials and join us.

Darla Bostick has been an art educator for 35 years and is a member of several art organizations in the North Texas area: Visual Arts Society of Texas, Society of Watercolor Artists

Plein-Air Painting & Photo Workshop
Taught by Niki Gulley & Scott Williams
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Aug. 12 – 18, 2012

Final Registration Deadline: July 1

There is something about Santa Fe that has drawn artists there for decades, the Light. The clean pure radiant quality of the sunlight bathes the region in a glow that makes colors come alive and adds a richness to the surroundings. This is the landscape that inspired Georgia O’keeffe and Ansel Adams, now it’s your turn. Capture the beauty of a river that has carved its way through the rugged terrain or a pueblo set against a snow capped mountain backdrop.

Imagine working on your photography and painting skills in an environment with such visual stimulation and artistic opportunities.

There will be walking tours through the back streets and canals of Venice as we go in search of opulent costumes and dazzling masks in a setting like no other place on earth. There will also be critique sessions throughout the workshop that can provide invaluable information and feedback, as well as giving everyone an opportunity to share ideas and get to know each other. There will also be opportunities each day to see the museums, visit the churches, go shopping and enjoy all of the things that make Venice what it is.

Special Event: Artist Reception and Show
When: Saturday, August 4, 2012 - 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Featured Artist: Vicki Smith
Vicki Sowell Smith is a native Dallasite and has been painting for over 30 years. Taking classes in painting, drawing, and design, Smith began oil painting in 2008 finding a medium that gave energy to her passion of creating art. She has studied with Sue Alston, watercolorist, Suzanne Kelly Clark, SMU teacher (plein air painting) and took her first oil classes with Bob Bates. She is now working with Chris Middlebrook Wyatt.  Always looking for and finding an unusual approach, her paintings show a flair for fun and color… especially the neon zebras!
She is a featured artist in the 2012 edition of CityArtCal Fine Art in Dallas and exhibited in the Garden Gallery from March 9-25th 2012. Her art is part of numerous private collections and has been commissioned by many art patrons and collectors.

Artist Statement
“The oil painting unleashed a new passion for painting”, Smith said. “It seemed to bring together all the numerous experiences, lessons, and ideas I have been working on for many years. Taking what I have learned from my head and then translating it to my hand and on to the canvas is a tricky process. Then adding in what’s in my heart to create something unique and fun takes time.” “I enjoy finding a scene and then capturing it with a photo or working several pictures together. It gives me time to work on the composition and also keep the light the way I like it.”

Location: Marshall-McPhail Gallery
Marshall Motors, 11450 Sprowles Street. Dallas, Texas 75229
