Free eBook Now Available | How to Succeed at Art Shows and Festivals

For several years Xanadu Gallery has published RedDotBlog.com as a resource for artists and art marketing professionals. The blog is a medium for us to share what we have learned (and continue to learn) in the art business. I feel that a big part of the success of the blog has been the great interaction we get with our audience in the comments on our posts. Often the comments are more insightful than the original post.

Recently we started a new series of posts called Collective Wisdom that draws upon that community to tackle issues important to artists. The idea was that we could start a topic and draw upon the vast experience of our readers to illuminate the topics . . . Read More by Clicking  here

Looking for a place to post your portfolio or just for some inspiration? Check out the new Internet phenomenon Pinterest. It's a free online "pinboard" where you can organize and share images and interests. You can also add prices to your pinboard, so there is potential for some commerce.

Part of the simple utility of the site is the ability to use "Pin Buttons" in your browser or smartphone to pin images you find on the web directly to your pinboard. If you "pin" other artists' images though, be sure to offer proper attribution -- see the "Pin Etiquette" and Copyright sections.

For suggestions on how to use the site, see the article wherein Beth Hayden explores: "How Artists Can Harness the Power of Pinterest".

She and Alyson Stanfied of Art Biz Blog are planning to offer a teleseminar soon: How to Use Pinterest for Your Art Business

See also Alyson's post Is the Pinterest Problem Really a Problem? that addresses the copyright and attribution problems and how to protect your images.

Natasha Wescoat's article "Pinterest For Artists: 5 Creative Ways To Share Your Work" points out the major reasons to try this new image resource.

January 2012 State of the Art

    An Annual Letter from
the Executive Director and President of the Creative Arts Center of Dallas

Our mission is to provide a nurturing environment for people to discover, develop and express their artistic visions.  Our vision is to create a place where community arises as we transform the ordinary into the extraordinary through creative experiences.

    Thank You for Getting It!

You Have Come to CAC to Explore,  Create & Inspire

Many arts organizations continue to face a challenging economy - CAC included. We managed to end the year with enrollment nearly what is was in 2010 thanks to many new workshops that became very popular.

We are grateful that you continue to engage with CAC and our amazing roster of teaching artists and educational programs. You are at work creating art and building community like no other arts organization in the North Texas area.  Some of you come to CAC a little intimated since you haven't created a piece of art since high school or even elementary school. In the five short years that I have been here, I am seeing many of those same people exhibiting and selling their work in the community -and a few are emerging as working artists.  Each of you is spending your creative energy with like-minded people who share your passion.

    About Lyn-Arts

Lyn-Arts has been in business for 40 years in Arlington.  We recently downsized  and are adjusting what we do.  We went from a full service art and craft supplier, arts and antiques plus extensive classes to a more specialized shop. (from 14,000 to 1200)

We do extensive picture framing, both custom and ready made (alto the smaller space limits space  available for ready made frames)  We have great quality and prices which gives us a good artist and decorator customer base, plus our retail customers. We are now into our third generation framing.

The space allows me to have a wonderful studio space for my own art-craft works.  I have a small display area for my finished art to sell and hope can add to that space as we liquidate some of the supplies stored here from the downsizing.
I do teach classes on a "private class, by appointment" program as I no longer have the huge class room space that the larger building allowed me.  My prices for classes did not go up, just the flexibility. You can find more information on my web site www.lyn-arts.com

We have stained glass supplies and an huge stock of feathers. I did design work for a feather gatherer and about 20 years  I also worked closely with a ribbon manufacturer and am heavily overstocked on some great ribbons if anyone needs a bargain on a truck load.

The City of Dallas is asking Art News DFW to help us build a network map of cultural organizations in Dallas. Through this process we will identify existing and potential connections between individuals, organizations and the community. It is hoped that understanding and leveraging these connections will provide a conduit to create and strengthen grassroots community engagement to spur lasting revitalization. Examples in Dallas, such as the Design District, the Cedars, and north Oak Cliff, have shown that creativity can serve as a change agent for economic revitalization within a community. The goal of this project is to tap into this economic development resource by mapping the creative community within Dallas and increasing its connectedness.

We would appreciate your organization distributing this survey link to your members. Through your help, we can start building a picture of Dallas’ creative economy. At the end of this project we will produce an online map and document for the public that will locate and identify the interconnections between organizations and individuals that contribute to the creative economy.

Thank you in advance for helping us in this endeavor. We look forward to sharing the results of this study with you. For questions or further information, please contact Justin Tirsun at Justin.tirsunes@dallascityhall.com
