    Don’t miss this informative
    and lively demonstration

Elva Robinson is a long-time resident of Fort Worth, and a self-taught artist. She has worked in various arts and crafts media for most of her life. Only within the past few years, in her fifties, has she made an attempt to define her artistic vision. She has combined her interests in photography, paper sculpture, and digital art to create what she refers to as "photosculpture."

Her process involves making multiple copies of a photograph, or a piece of digital art. She then cuts, shapes, and layers them to create a three-dimensional work of art. Sometimes the work will be realistic, with little digital manipulation of the original photograph. At other times, she creates a more abstract work that bears little resemblance to the photo. She also creates work that combines parts of two or three photos, or combines the photos with other media. All these approaches start with the same basic techniques, which is what she will be demonstrating. To see examples of her work, visit her website: www.robinsongimages.com.

Join us for an evening of fun and learn a new technique from a wonderful artist. TAG website: http://trinityartsguild.org/ Artist's website: Website: www.robinsongimages.com

Tim Best and Tom Leininger bring together two diverging points of performance for a two-person show in the Upstairs Gallery at 500X in Dallas from November 5 through 27. Opening Reception Saturday November 5th from 7-10pm.

Tim Best, a Dallas based artist, stages dramatic emotive scenes. His work presented is from his “making a scene” project that includes photography, video and a book release. The setting is blackness as if it were the mind void of thought. Then a spotlight illuminates a figure doing nothing but expressing emotion, that uniquely human behavior that inspires both constructive and destructive action. The drama is about to unfold but instead of live performance, Tim Best captures this with a still camera. He used a list of 49 emotions found on Wikipedia to call out emotions that the actor spontaneously improvised under the spotlight. Total focus is on the facial expression, the physical gestures and the wardrobe flying through space in crisp detail. Drama itself and the process of creating drama is the subject of Best’s work.

Emotion drives Best’s work. “In my experience, it is the root of all drama. In this body of work I direct actors and models through a sequence of emotions. Rather than assume the role of observer in a dispassionate way, I choose to actively set up these performances in the studio. The resulting photographs are surreal, subconscious reconstructions and rearrangements of ‘reality’ that come out of the experience of improvising the emotions. The chiaroscuro of the spotlight illuminating the figure in the darkness implies a tension between real life and the imaginary.”

Tom Leininger is a Denton based photographer whose work is rooted in reality and based on private moments individuals are able to carve out for themselves at public events. The color photographs are found rather staged. They are part of his ongoing series “Sidelines”. The events at which the images were first made may have been staged, but the images are not about the events, rather those on the side who are watching.

“The event brings people together, which becomes the fodder for me to explore,” Leininger says about the work. “I am not interested in the place or the event, but rather how all of these different events add up to one big staged show in which the script is written after the event.”

Tim Best and Tom Leininger can be contacted for more information. Best can be reached at 214-531-3857. Leininger’s phone number is 940-230-0110.

New work by Matthew Clark explores what is underfoot with an installation of sewn felt works that reference the repetitive nature of road construction, the beauty of utilitarian design, highlights the spaces between pedestrian and vehicular designation as well as lays the groundwork for the viewer's own personal journey in regard to the popular culture of the past.

Through Nov. 27 is a wonderful art exhibit at the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History.  It's entitled,  Alexandre Hogue:  An American Visionary.  This man was a dynamite personality who was born in 1898 and rose to national attention when Life magazine ran a several page spread of photos of his paintings of the dust bowl.  Hogue lived in Texas for 40 years.  He never went to college and was artistically basically self taught but was still head of the art department at Tulsa University for nearly 20 years.  He was always able to support his family with his art and when in his 80's and 90's he painted beautiful large paintings of the Big Bed area of Texas.  He was painting one when he died in 1994 and this one is in the exhibit.  He has paintings in the Georges Pompidou in Paris, in New york, in many museums around the country and of course, in private collections.  I'll quote from the book "Alexandre Hogue:  An American Visionary" by Susie Kalil,  "Throughout his life, Hogue remained outside the mainstream of American art; his paintings were always ahead of their time.  Still, Hogue stuck by his innermost belief:  a sense of life within the earth that endures despite man's ravages.  Each series--from the hauntingly beautiful Taos landscapes and prophetic canvases of a dust-covered Southwest to his depictions of the fierce geological phenomena of the Big Bend--serves as a paean to the awesomeness of nature."  The staff at the Museum of Science and History were excited to get this exhibit, as they host exhibits that relate to science or history and they felt Hogue's ahead of his time concerns with man's treatment of nature were appropriate.  This is the first time that all of the Big Bend pieces have been exhibited together since 1984, although it wasn't a complete set at that time since they hadn't all been painted.  Although Alexandre Hogue is my great uncle, I feel I'm fairly objective in thinking this exhibit is outstanding. --Roberta Ferguson

    Community Workshop and Artist Talk

    "Tres Milagros"
    milagro: miracle: an extraordinary event

    Saturday, November 5, 2011

    Saturday, November 12, 2011

    4pm - 6pm

Please join Apryl Begay, Rebecca Collins and Katrina Doran in the making of a community mosaic milagro. Hear stories about their creations for the show and the found connections between people and their petitions for prayers. The finished art mosaic will be gifted to the Oak Cliff Cultural Center. You are welcome to attend just one or both Saturdays. The workshops are free and open to the public.

Milagro is a Spanish word for miracle and milagros are small charms made from copper, tin, pewter, silver or gold. They are formed to represent parts of the body: eyes, arms, legs, the heart, or the home, pets and livestock. Milagros are most often used to petition saints for favors, prayers and wishes. These tokens are often seen attached to the bases of wooden saints in old churches or on abandoned crutches with a note of thanks for the prayers answered. Today, in popular culture, one sees milagros on wooden crosses and sacred hearts in many gift shops. The charms and tokens are also worn as jewelry, believed to be endowed with supernatural powers.

    Digital Prep for Artists: Monday, October 24 - November 14, 2011, 1 - 4PM

Do you ever miss out on entering a competition or exhibition because you can't get your files into the right format in time? Galleries mad at you because you don't send the right size file? Tired of having to get your children (or grandchildren) to help you and make you feel like a fool? Then this workshop is for you.

Artist and computer graphics instructor Elaine Taylor will guide you through Adobe Photoshop Elements* and how to prepare digital submissions of your artwork. You will learn how to import files from various sources, how to organize them; how to straighten, crop, and fix problems; how to save in various file formats and how to rename. The mysteries of resolution and image size / file size will be explained in layman terms (worth the money, all by itself). There will be handouts, you will work on laptops provided at the school, and price of class includes one emergency email / phone call with the instructor after the workshop is over.

This class is perfect for computer beginners but will still have information for those comfortable with computers but new to Adobe Elements. Cost is $100 for TAC members/$150 for non-members for 4 sessions. (this was going to be an all-guy session, but not enough signed up, so it will be mixed) $50 deposit required at sign-up. The workshop will take place in a classroom at the UTA Fort Worth Center at 1401 Jones Street, Fort Worth 76102. Parking is free in orange parking spots.

*Adobe Elements is a comparatively inexpensive program that is easier to learn than Adobe Photoshop. A lot of the information can be used with the full Photoshop, as well. Software will be available for a discounted price from UTA-FWC. For more information or to sign up please call: 817.709.7587 or 817.298.3021 or email gallerymanager@fwcac.org (Elaine Taylor). This class is offered through Texas Artists Connection, sponsored by the Fort Worth Community Arts Center

Kenneth Porter will be teaching adult acrylic classes this November and ending just before the Christmas holidays at the Trinity Arts Guild in Bedford.  The first class will be on Wednesday, November 2nd, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.  If there are enough people interested, he will teach another adult acrylic class on Saturday morning, November 5th, from at 9 AM to 12 noon.  Kenneth will also teach a youth art class (Middle School through High School age) starting that same afternoon (November 5th) from 1pm to 3pm. There will be 6 sessions for each class.  The adult classes will cost $15 per session.  The youth classes will cost $10 per session.

The adults who have not painted with acrylics will only need the basic colors, a couple of paint brushes (any size from #2 to #12), a container for water and a rag to help clean up with.  A 16X20 canvas or canvas board will work to start with.  If you already paint with acrylics you should have everything needed.  All participants will need a notebook and pencil or pen to take notes with.  A lot of specific art information will given during the classes.  These classes are not just for beginners in acrylic but any artist or teacher that wish to expand his or her knowledge or to gain more ideas to use in art classes. Youth participants will need a drawing pad, a good earser (pink pearl suggested), one drawing stump and at least one pencil.  A #2 pencil will work for now but a #4 drawing pencil would be great. They will also need a notebook.  The youth will start with pencil and work up to colored pencil, then to acrylic painting.

Kenneth Porter started painting at age 14. He has had formal training through Clarendon College, West Texas State University, Wayland Baptist University and the Air Force Graphic Arts School.  He has a degree in commercial art.  Kenneth will use projectors and physical objects along with painting demonstrations for each phase of his lesson presentations. His contact information is kbppokey@aol.com or 817-297-7270. Examples of his paintings are on his Facebook Studio page.

The DeSoto Art League's Member's Only Art Show will kick off on December 1 with all art due to be delivered to the DeSoto City Hall Atrium Gallery.  The show awards will be made at the League's Annual Christmas Party, Silent Auction and Covered Dish Dinner.  This meeting will be on  December 8 in the Bluebonnet Room at the DeSoto City Center at 6:30PM.All artwork must be picked up on January 3, 2012.

    POLLOCK GALLERY
Self-Taught Masters of American Art from Important Private Collections in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio

Monday, October 24 through Saturday, December 3
Pollock Gallery in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center
    Free

A central focus of the Pollock Gallery over the last 20 years has been to seek out and disseminate artistic/historical resources that have considerable aesthetic and cultural value. Providing access to the rich resources afforded by private collections gives students and the public the opportunity to see and study little-known treasures. Much notable art in America remains underappreciated and obscure. This exhibition brings together a number of rarely seen, masterful works by such artists as James Castle, Frank Jones, Bill Traylor and Chelo González Amezcua, among others. The exhibition is co-curated with Murray Smithers, a nationally respected advocate and authority on self-taught artists and their work. More details

Cyndi Barnes will demo concrete scupture and mosaic art at the DeSoto Art League meeting on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7pm. Location:

    DESOTO, TEXAS 75115

    website: http://www.desotoartleague.com/

Cyndi Barnes writes: "I am a mosaic/concrete artist, mom of two (older kids, 17 & 21) and wife (my husband owns concrete material supplies companies). I have been an artist my entire life, but in the last 5 years I have specialized in mosaics and concrete art. I was very fortunate to find several mosaic artists in the Metroplex area to learn from. The Creative Arts Center in Dallas, was where I started my adventure in the world of mosaics.

I now specialize in mosaics on 3D forms that I build out of Styrofoam and concrete, then mosaic on top. I now can add, 'concrete artist too' since I have recently added carved concrete pieces to my specialty. My 3D pieces can be used inside or outside, depending on the wants and needs of the client. "

The Art of the Start   Redefining Gesture Presented by Master Draughtsman
Michael Mentler Gesture drawings are not exercises we do to warm-upbefore we get to do the real drawings. They are not quick drawings that waste a lot of  paper. The gesture is the life force within the drawing. It is the most important part of the drawing process andthe part we give the least consideration. In this workshop we will use the first few minutes to analyze the dynamics of the pose. We won't start drawing until we seeand understand what the model is doing. Poses will range from 5 to 35 minutes
Great finishes don't happen without great starts.

    • GROUNDING Visualizing the space the drawing will occupy
    • EMPATHY Feeling the stress, weight and balance of the pose
    • STRUCTURE Understanding that function creates form
    • TENSIONThe 3 T's, Twists, Tilts, and Turns
    • UNITY Unifying line and value
    • RHYTHM Identifying the underlying kinentic movement
    • EXPRESSIONTranslating the gesture for the viewer

It is not too late to feel the impact of THE BOOK BERM Installation created by artists VET and Sheila Cunningham, located on the grounds of the Texas Discovery Garden, Fair Park, Dallas. The 30ft long book sculpture stretches quietly across the landscape in the Shade Garden area, but makes a loud statement about our transition from the written word to electronic media. “This art piece is not for or against technology, but simply acknowledges that we are on the cusp of an electronic phenomenon,” says local artist VET. At its high point, the berm is 3ft high and displays discarded soft and hardback books, old phonebooks and newspapers that are partially covered in mounds of mulch and soil. Visitors are encouraged to guess how many total books and newspapers used to build the berm. Of course, entries are posted the on-line. THE BOOK BERM continues to be on display through October 31 until it, too, will be replaced by the new best thing.
For further information visit http://artcycletx.blogspot.com/p/book-berm-at-texas-discovery-gardens.html or contact VET, 214-839-7689.

    Spirits Alive

    Welcome Paula Mitchell

Artist Reception Sat, Oct. 22 from 6-9 pm

Paula recently arrived from Indianapolis so let's give her an enthusiastic Texas welcome.  In her own words Paula provides insight into her exhibition of collages.

I am a dreamer, a creator, a joyful spirit, a promoter of happiness and a thought provoker.

I believe we need to remember that this journey we are on is about loving yourself and, in turn, being able to love everything around us.

As women, we need to be safe within ourselves, so we can continue learning, teaching and evolving. I believe in the strength of women and the words we share as we connect with each other.

La Reunion TX invites you to 2011 Art Chic@s Open House and Reception (Oct 29, 2011). website: http://lareuniontx.org/

The 2011 Art Chic@s Open House and Reception will showcase work created at the La Reunion TX site by seven local artists assisted by Dallas-area high school students. Students learn from this experience about the creative process, about logistics, and about art as a profession.

This year, for the first time, male artists are being teamed with high-school boys to create a site-specfic installation. Art Chicas and Art Chicos work on separate days but will come together to show their work at this Open House.  But not only will they show their work, some will also be performingtheir work--or hanging it in a most dramatic way.

The artists: Bernardo Diaz, Art Garcia, Frankie Garcia III, Aralyn McGregor, Lyndsey Rieple, Emily Riggert and Jennifer Sereno.

Thanks to our sponsors and Mentor Madres and Padres: Zaida Basora, Sally Horchow, Jessica Stewart Lendvay, Leslie MacLean, Julie Porter, Lucilo Peña, Catherine Rose, the Hall Foundation, UNT Dallas and Eventbrite. And thanks to our Honorary Chair, The Honorable Elba Garcia, who will join us for the event, and to all of the volunteers who make this event happen.

Art Chic@s is a collaboration of La Reunion TX, the Dallas Art Dealers Association and the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas.

The exact location, the LRTX site in west Oak Cliff, will be sent by email a few days before the event.  Long pants, long sleeves and sturdy shoes are a must: this is an as-yet-undeveloped site.  We're working on it!

The Arlington Museum of Art is proud to present our annual Artist's Showcase. This six week exhibit celebrates the vitality of visual art in Arlington. Artists from across the Metroplex participate in this annual event to display one or two of their artistic creations in the Arlington Museum of Art during October and November. MARTY WALKER GALLERY PRESENTS:

    DION JOHNSON
    NEW PAINTINGS

    VIDEO ROOM: BRIAN FRIDGE

    OCTOBER 15 -NOVEMBER 12, 2011 / Opening: Saturday, October 15, 6-8pm

Marty Walker Gallery is pleased to present large-scale, color-field abstract paintings of Los Angeles-based artist Dion Johnson. Bringing California hard edge painting into the new millennium, Johnson combines flat planes of bold commercial colors, creating shifting fields that recall paintings of Karl Benjamin and John McLaughlin.

The strata of color inspired by LA’s overabundant billboards, architecture and buzzing traffic transforms the congested urban culture into simplified synthetic cityscape of vivid clarity. Johnson, like McLaughlin, explores the movement between the planes of color, like subtle pauses that linger in musical compositions, setting the colors to pulsate between thin stripes and expanding wide slabs, flat space and unexplored depths. While Johnson’s interest is rooted in landscape and environment, his paintings lack any representational forms to evoke an openness recalling an almost utopian eternal Southern California summer – light, rich, and abundant.

Johnson lives and works in Los Angeles, received his BA from the Ohio State University and an MA from Claremont University. Johnson has exhibited nationally in museums and galleries from New York, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and Columbus, Ohio.

VIDEO ROOM: BRIAN FRIDGE, Sequence 36.2, 2011

In his first exhibition at the gallery, Dallas artist Brian Fridge merges sculpture in a virtual realm with video, inspired by Malevich, theories in physics, Belgian artist Panamarenko’s flying machines, and Arte Povera’s celebration of endless change, process, and the flow of energy. For this exhibition, the artist will share Sequence 36.2 which begins with a tiny mandala-like form appearing to morph into simultaneously a plant-like object vacillating between growth and inky plumes. His constructed scenes suspend time and recognition, and when combined with camera recordings of magnetic phenomena such scenes become shifting, dimensional abstractions.

Fridge received his MFA from University of Texas at Dallas and has been recognized with the Dallas Museum of Art Kimbrough Fund, Whitney Biennial, and ArtPace Artist-in-residence, and has had numerous national and international gallery and museum exhibitions.

Celebrating the approaching time for the opening of the new Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava, Haley-Henman Gallery presentsConnections.

This singular art experience is part of an ongoing process to bridge communities by acknowledging and making connections of time and place with each other.  Connections invites the greater Dallas community and all visitors to participate in the art process by an interactive art installation.  It is free and open to the public and suitable for all ages.

MARTIN SCHREIBER RETROSPECTIVE: A JOURNEY IN HARD-EDGE GEOMETRIC ART
OPENING OCTOBER 15, 2011 at the Madi Museum

A reflection on the career of the late Martin Schreiber opens Saturday, October 15 with a reception for Madi members at 5:30 and the public from 6:30 to 7:30. The exhibit, Martin Schreiber Retrospective: A Journey in Hard-Edge Geometric Art, features early explorations in concrete art and minimalism through development of his later color band style. On Sunday, October 16 at 2:00 p.m., the artist’s daughter, Judith Schreiber, will lead an Arcadia Salon Discussion with an intimate look at her father’s work and influences. The exhibit will run through January 8, 2012.

Born in Berlin, Germany, in November 1924, Martin Schreiber was a student of the late Reuben Tam at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Mr. Schreiber enjoyed a long and successful art career both as a commercial art director in New York City with Dell Publishing and as a visual artist working in hard-edge geometric abstraction. Perhaps stemming from his early apprenticeships in the diamond trade, his work is a commitment to the hard-edge experience.

    October Demo Artist

    Kim Collins

Abstract in Acrylic & Mixed Media

    Biography

Kim Collins was born in Biloxi, Mississippi but grew up in several different states, England and Germany. Her home is in Northeast Texas where she has lived since 1977. Primarily a self-taught artist, she has exhibited locally and won several awards. Kim was represented by Beaux- Arts Gallery in Grapevine, Mud, Wind & Fire Co-op and Gallery in Grapevine, Westwerks Gallery in Granbury, Stratford Green Gallery in Lewisville, and Artist’s Showplace in Richardson.

    Artist’s Statement

My work has evolved over the years from realistic watercolors to fluid abstract de- signs in mixed media. The likely catalyst for this change was a bout with cancer which influenced many “re-thinking what’s important” moments. I realized I had been working with processes which were rigid, traditional and a bit tedious for me, but I was afraid to break out of the box. After the cancer scare, I allowed myself the freedom to have fun, try new things, get out of my comfort zone and play with design, color and materials. I have never looked back.

    About Etsy Fort Worth

Etsy Fort Worth is a collection of independent artists, crafters, and designers in the Fort Worth metropolitan area who sell their wares on Etsy.com.  The group was founded in February 2009 to collectively promote members’ businesses and spread the word about the benefits of buying local handmade products.

The group’s mission is to spread knowledge and increase marketplace participation of handmade goods. Etsy Fort Worth strives to make this happen by creating an environment where Etsians can connect, network, and form friendships around their common handmade interests as well as holding semi-annual community craft fairs promoting artists, crafters, and creators.  Their website is: www.etsyfortworth.com

Each participant will create a unique mosaic garden column approximately 18” tall and 12” diameter. It will be suitable for either indoor or outdoor use. Wonderful used as a plant stand, to hold a garden statuary, sundial, or as a base for a concrete birdbath basin or plexiglass/glass small patio table!

Location: Instructor Darla Bostick's house (2101 Woodbrook, Denton, 76205). We will be working outdoors in the backyard, on the driveway or in the garage. The projects can be stored here if step #1 is completed on time and taken home after the 2nd session.

We will meet twice for 4 hours each time. The first session will involve planning the design and adhesion of mosaic materials. The second session will involve grouting and cleaning the final piece. The final step, which is sealing the grout can be done at home since it is very easy and saves a trip to my house.

Since we all prefer small groups, there will be no more than 15 participants per session. I anticipate the sessions to fill quickly, so if you wish to share the session with a friend, be sure to sign up together. This makes a greatmother/daughter project also. Rather than each making their own project, one project can be shared.

To register, contact Darla Bostick at 940.320.5660 or darlabostickart@gmail.com.

Dallas Arboretum & White Rock Lake
Painting Workshop led by Niki Gulley & Photo Workshop led by Scott Williams

    Sat. Oct. 29 & Sun. Oct. 30
    9:30 am – 4:30 pm

We are teaching a new workshop in Dallas this fall, so get out and enjoy the beautiful cool fall weather and develop your artistic skills as we take you to the Arboretum and White Rock Lake. Learn how to paint or take better photographs on location, or simply improve your skills.

If you choose the painting portion of the workshop, I’ll help you learn how to paint quickly and accurately on location, capturing the light and not “chasing” it, all while working on your individual style. While painting in the studio may feel very comfortable to you, there is something special that goes into plein air work – the sights, sounds and feelings of being immersed in the landscape all go into your painting, and the result is something full of energy and expression that is often lost in the studio. Also, you probably notice how when you get back from photographing, often your photos are missing that beautiful quality that attracted you to the scenery, and by painting on location, I’ll show you how to capture the light far more accurately than working from photographs, and put that sparkle into your painting. Bring your favorite medium – oils, pastels, acrylics or watercolors.

If you choose the photography portion of the workshop, Scott will help you “Get the Most Out of Your Camera” and learn how to take your photography to the next level. This will be a hands on combination studio and location class, with the locations being the Arboretum and White Rock Lake. Scott will be going over camera basics, functions, composition and addressing any questions. This class will give you an opportunity to get experience while working with your camera in a real world setting. For more information on the photography portion of this workshop, check out http://www.blind-squirrel.org.

Or, if you like you could always choose to do aspects of both workshops, with splitting your time between developing both your painting and photography skills. Class size is limited, so we can work with each student individually to help you develop your own voice, and early registration is suggested.

Register by Oct. 12th, and save $40 on the workshop.
    Discount Deadline: Oct. 12th – $235
    Late Registration: $275

Admission to the Arboretum is included. We suggest bringing your own lunch, or on Saturday, you could dine at the Arboretum’s café. If you can only attend one of the days, please let us know and we’ll try to accommodate your schedule for a reduced fee.

Let me know if you’d like to join me or Scott by e-mailing Niki@NikiGulley.com or calling 214-803-5812. We’d love to have you participate!
