Pick an art, any art
|
You could take home a painting or sculpture for helping introduce the gallery to art lovers in the metroplex.
Visit the gallery between now and Christmas Eve, bring a friend(s) and put your name in the drawing to win any piece of art up to $500 in the gallery or on our website. If your choice exceeds $500 you'll pay the difference.
- You'll get 1 entry for coming & 1 for each friend you bring, and each friend will get 1 entry - everytime you visit with more friend(s).
- To make it easier, gallery hours are expanding (see separate article below.)
- If you schedule a party or meeting here, you will get an entry for each attendee, and of course your guests will each get an entry. This does not apply to our regular classes and events.
- At noon Christmas Eve we'll draw the winning entry. You need not be present to win, but do drop in for our open house & refreshments between 11am and 2 pm.
- You'll have until January 8, 2011 to make your selection.

The 2nd annual BECA Foundation un-juried, open-registration, international exhibition of art + design – registration is open until allocated spaces are full or January 9, 2011, whichever comes first.

The purpose of this non-juried experimental, group exhibition is to further broaden exhibition opportunities and to discover and highlight new approaches by emerging contemporary artists, architects + designers as well as those who are more established but are stretching their work into unfamiliar territory. This exhibition provides an open opportunity in which to experiment freely. Registration is limited but guarantees exhibition. Works will be displayed salon style in a mosaic grid covering the interior of the exhibition space.
Modeled after The BECA Foundation’s first un-juried, experimental open exhibition, held in June 2009, titled ‘12x12x122’, this Lab AD call to artists, architects + designers guarantees exhibition of their work to all those who are registered. The Call will remain open until allocated spaces are full or until January 9, 2011, whichever comes first. For Lab AD, we have made an effort to broaden the variety of acceptable works (including 2-D, 3-D and video) but with limited space we are only able to allocate a limited amount of size categories and like ‘12x12x122’, all will be registered on a first come, first served basis.
All registered artists, architects + designers will have their works exhibited from February 4 – 18, 2011 at New Studio A.D. located at 312 Rosemont Ave NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. There will be both an opening reception held on Friday, February 4, 2011 from 5 – 8pm during Albuquerque’s First Friday ArtsCrawl and also a closing reception held on Friday, February 18, 2011 from 5 – 8pm during Albuquerque’s Third Friday Downtown ArtsCrawl. There will be 20 artists, architects and/or designers selected from those exhibiting to have their works featured online at www.BECAICAD.org. Works are not required to conform to any particular medium, style, theme or concept. You may view complete submission info. posted at: http://www.becaicad.org/artist-designer-submissions.php

Plein-Air Painting / Photography Workshop
Taught by Dallas Instructors, Niki Gulley & Scott Williams
Athens & Santorini, Greece, May 11 - 19 / 2011

Early Signup Deadline 12/15/10 for a $400 savings!!!
Get inspired from the ancient beauty of Greece as you join us for this amazing opportunity to sharpen your skills while enjoying one of the most picturesque landscapes in the world. Learning has never been as much fun as it is with this unique workshop that takes both painters and photographers on a tour through the cradle of civilization. The best part is that you get to choose which aspects of the workshop interest you – whether it is learning how to paint quickly to achieve the mood and changing light of the scene or deriving the most out of your camera as you capture one of the most beautiful places in the world, Greece.
This workshop will open your eyes to a new view of your art as we push you on a personal journey to expand your creativity. You will experience the sights, sounds and passion of Greece as you are immersed in its culture. See Athens spread out from the Acropolis, explore the cliff side views of the blue domes and white washed buildings set against the cobalt water of the Agean or watch the sun set next to the windmills at Ioa. This is an opportunity to have one of those adventures that you will talk about for years, all while you improve on your artistic skills in a real world setting.
Niki will conduct the Plein-Air Painting Workshop from different picturesque locations daily, teaching through a combination of demos, discussions, assistance and critiques. Sessions will be broken into different morning and afternoon locations, with plenty of time in between for shopping, sightseeing or to dine al fresco for a leisurely lunch.
Scott will take the photographers on a daily walking tour along the caldera and through the back streets that make Santorini one of the truly wondrous spots on earth. You will have the opportunity to experience Greece through your lens as Scott guides you to use your camera to define what you see while achieving your own artistic vision. As with the painters, there will be daily destinations with time allowances for exploring on your own.

Marty Walker Gallery presents “Small Works: Art + Object” -a small sculpture invitational featuring strange and fantastic small art objects from a selection of 16 stellar artists. This assembly of sculpture debunks the trend that “bigger is better,” and by working within a small format, these artists have created a mess of random creatures and fascinating objects that demonstrate the power of big ideas imagined in scaled-down and accessible forms.

Perhaps you’ve seen them around town or in the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens or in the tour of the Hidden Gardens – oil and acrylic painters, water colorists, and pencilists, all en plein air (that’s a French expression for “in the open air”). These artists may have been from P.A.I.N.T. (Professional Artists in North Texas), a group of 15 artists who make a weekly practice of painting out of doors.
Earlier this year P.A.I.N.T. organized as a formal group to display and market their work after many years of painting together. Although the artists are all from the North Texas, many are represented nationally in shows and galleries. Their subjects are primarily landscapes and botanical subjects, and the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens is a favorite venue; yet these artists are accomplished in still life and figurative works, as well. The members of P.A.I.N.T. are: Ann Hardy, Arlene Butterworth Taylor, Beverly Richmond, Bonnie Dunn, Cecilia Robertson, Cheri Irwin, Claudia Davis, Frances White, Irma Ward, Jan Bateman, Paula Robinson, Shirley Kinworthy, Tendaris Walling, Tom E. Kellie, and Tosca Engisch.
P.A.I.N.T. will exhibit from November 16, 2010 through January 15, 2011. See a sampling of their talent while enjoying a delicious meal in the ambience of The Gardens Restaurant. For more about the group, contact Irma at irma700@tx.rr.com.

The Frisco Association for the Arts present the touring exhibition 'Texas Goes to France' with works by Diana Moya and D.K. Richardson.
A delegation of Texas artists led by Moya traveled to Europe this summer to exhibit their artwork, representing the USA in two of the most beautiful international exhibitions dedicated to the art of pastel. D.K. Richardson stated, ”Words don’t quite convey the awe of seeing your paintings hanging among the works of other master pastelists from Europe, invited by the oldest Pastel Society in the world.”
Paris, Texas? or Paris, France? In an interesting note, both artists start by interpreting the similarities of what they know versus an icon in this exciting venture, as they document their travels through paintings, photographs, and videos.
Visit with Diana and D.K. for demos, free to the public November 27 and December 18 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and let their artwork transport you to beautiful places. Both artists will offer holiday rebates on portrait commissions and fine painting classes for children and adults.
“Art is to be lived and shared. Every art piece you bring home needs to have a meaning to become part of an everlasting investment that will remain in your family for generations,” said Diana Moya. “I'm very happy to share our experiences with Frisco, a great city for the Arts.”
The exhibit will be available for viewing at the new Frisco Discovery Center Art Gallery from November 18 to December 30, 2010. After Frisco, the exhibit goes to the Dallas Downtown Gallery in April and to the Arlington Museum of Art in May 2011. The Frisco Discovery Center, located at 8004 N. Tollway, Frisco, TX 75034, gives the public an opportunity to meet the local artists and purchase their art. For more information visit www.dianamoya.com or email info@dianamoya.com.

''The Cedars is home to fine artists and craftsmen working in every genre. Their studios, just south of downtown Dallas, have helped the neighborhood come alive. Once a year the studios are open to the public. . ." While you visit Cedars Open Studios from 12-6 Nov.20th meet the four artists who now share Art Hotel at 1112 S Akard. Several talented artists under one roof make an enjoyable variety of original 2D and 3D art in a beautiful loft style gallery. Johanna Roffino-Hulsey specializes in ''re-purposing'' castoff items into high quality one-of-a kind art. Her sculpture and 2D work is shown in local, regional and national venues. Rainee Carlson creates abstract paintings inspired by journal musings, drawings & collage. All of her work starts with a story. Nina Dyer ceramic works of art have their roots in figurative biomorphic forms and primarily focus on life cycle concepts. She creates 3-D works of art in both sculptural and functional ceramic pieces. Laurie Mahoney experiments with needle felting, using wool roving, creating small creatures, small sculptures and ''paintings''. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the art is reasonably priced and artists will be there to answer your questions, refreshments will be served. See arthotelgallery.com and cedarsopenstudios.com

An exhibit of Barack Obama on White Velvet - Right or Wrong - Two More Years
A Proposal to All Interested Artists
from Beverly Montgomery
In 2004, I put together an exhibit called “W – Portrait of a President - George Bush on Black Velvet”. Local artists participated in this exhibit in which satire and tongue and cheek were obvious to the viewing public.
Considering the times – post mid-term elections – I feel it is necessary to present to the public a new exhibit that will capture the emotions that have been exposed for everyone to experience. Therefore, “Obama on White Velvet”. The main theme – “Right or Wrong – Two More Years” is the prevailing sentiment that we will all have to live with for 2 more years.

Arthello Beck Gallery opens new works by Mark Crow and introducing Marisa Williamson, multi-disciplinary artist.
|

Arlington artist Mark Crow is essentially self-taught but one would never guess it from the technical skill and personal aesthetic exhibited in his paintings. His latest body of work, "The Onion Principle" delves into two of his passions, observing architectonic elements in the environment and their relationship to natural lifeforms and the human figure. His richly textured paintings pull the viewer into their layered surfaces, keeping one engaged with both admiring the painterly quality of them along marveling at the complex visual conversation rendered. Mark's palette is relatively limited however the subtleties he manages to invoke by pixelating his imagery makes it seem much more varied. Free admission.

"Broadcast", new multi-media works by Marisa Williamson

With her first one-woman show"Broadcast" at the Arthello Beck Gallery, Philadelphia native Marisa Williamson blends all of her artistic concerns. Marisa's discourse on the influence of media on societal norms finds expression in video, works on paper and sculpture, of which all three media she uses effortlessly. Her "boxes" are three dimensional narratives that explore her favorite topic: television's hold on the American psyche. She continues this conversation in her works on paper and tops the entire dialogue off with a video. We are excited to present Marisa Williamson in her first one-woman show and look forward to seeing more of her work in the future.
Mark Crow & Marisa Williamson openings: Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010 at 5 pm. Shows close January 1, 2011.

The Society for Watercolor Artists will hold their November 15th meeting at 7:00 pm. A critique by Dave Maxwell is scheduled for 6:00 pm. Bring your painting for the Painting of the Month Competition.

Demonstrator will be Jo Williams. A native Texan, Jo has spent most of her life among the woods and prairies of North Central Texas. Although she loves to paint the gentle scenery of her native area, she also enjoys painting more exotic scenery of mountains, canyons, desert, the ocean, and other sites from her travels.

Cool stuff that went down

Tasty Greenville
We've been asked to be a part of a lot of festivals lately, and we LOVE the Greenville area. Rain attacked all day, but there was still a lot of cool that went down at the Taste of Greenville.
See pics and read by David and Nicole Rodriguez here.
Clear the Air for one night
Our team-ups with local organization Hip Hops Helps Heal have always been incredible. H4 throws shows where local hip hoppers gather to perform to benefit charities (like the American Lung Association). We blow it out with the live art and spoken word.
Here's a gaggle of pics from the wild night
This is TRUE
The new jazz? A show that asked 20 poets to work with 20 artists they never met to create collaborative pieces for a gallery and live spoken word & art experience. What a rush. This is True was one of the coolest artlovemagic experiences ever.
See pics and read the story here.
ArtLoveMagic honored at city hall
Recently, the Mayor and City Council asked artlovemagic and the Deep Ellum Foundation to come in and speak about the success of our kid's workshop programs. The whole thing was pretty much a mind blowing experience and something we're very thankful for.
Read the blog by Michael Lagocki and Sherry Smith here.
Art beneath our footsteps.
Our pal Eddie Walker created something special to grace the front of the artlovemagic offices. And we caught it on video!

DALLAS – The Catholic Foundation has announced J. Lynn Kelly as the winner of the 5th Annual Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition. His work, “Downtown Playground” was unveiled during a public dedication ceremony in the Dallas Arts District.

The winning art will be displayed on a 28’ by 9’8” wall for approximately one year at The Catholic Foundation Plaza, which is free and open to the public and located on the grounds of the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the Dallas Arts District. “Downtown Playground” offers Kelly’s artistic vision of the Dallas Arts District. His intent was to directly involve the viewer in the District’s many art exhibition and performance venues. He arranged the venues in his work to artfully divide the space of the picture plane, which invites the public “to dance their eyes around all of the attractions.”
Kelly, the grand prize winner, received a $2,500 stipend, in addition to having his artwork displayed in the Dallas Arts District for one year. Two honorable mentions, Laura Moore with “Peaceful, Calm” and Susan Barnett with “The Plaza” received $250 each

Hi friends!
Our upcoming Intermediate workshop is "Smooth and Patterned" Saturday, November, 20th 10:00 am to 4:00 pm! We just got some new large iron tools in which help make a variety of surfaces from a palette knife effect to one that can push layers into one another in a more smooth or flat effect according to direction, temperature of layers and pressure applied. We'll also be creating patterns by building and scraping back and by incising and painting in then wiping off. I'm really enjoying these new tools and techniques. Please let me know if you can join me for this exciting workshop! More below:
If you have some stencils or patterned paper you would like to experiment with and incorporate with these methods, please bring your materials. All intemediate workshops are $100.00.
Many thanks, Bonny
