    In August, I’ll offer my fused art glass pendant class on Saturday, August 7th from 12:00 – 3:00.  We’ll make 8 pendants OR 6 pendants and 2 pairs of earrings.  Cost is $75 per student and class is limited to 6 students.

    I’ll also offer the sushi plate class on Saturday, August 14th, also from 12:00 – 3:00.  We’ll make a 10 x 10 curved sushi plate and a matching Wasabi dish.  Cost is$100 per student and class is limited to 6 students.  This will be the first time this latter class has been offered!

    As of this writing, both classes still have several openings.  Please contact me at your convenience to reserve a space!

    We are a creative collective based in Farmers Branch, and we would like to invite artists to be our neighbors! Depending on your skill set and talents, we may occasionally have freelance work we can offer you, if you're interested in that kind of thing. If you're doing your own thing and just need the space, no worries- we'll stay out of your way!  We have a furnished shared conference room with projector that would be free for you to use. Also, we're right across the street from a large park and next door to beautiful community gardens. There are three spaces available, ranging from 225 square feet to 450 square feet (this space is easily sharable).  Parking lot available to you and your guests.     Texas Artists Coalition 5th Annual Juried Membership Exhibit

    Augut 6 - 30, 2010

    2010 Juror Barry Whistler of Barry Whistler Gallery in Dallas selected 35 works from 20 artists from a record-setting 108 artists and almost 300 artworks. Six awards will be presented on August 6 around 7:30PM.

    The Texas Artists Coalition is a membership program designed to offer benefits for artists in the North Texas community. These benefits range from an annual juried exhibition to peer reviews to workshops, plus much more. The mission of the TAC is to support the career development of artists, whether they are emerging or established, amateur or professional. Programs of the TAC are supported by the Arts Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County, the Fort Worth Community Arts Center and a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.

    The TVAA gallery in the Plaza of the Americas building is hosting the show "The Sacredness of Death" during the month of October and the first week of November. This show is based on El Dia de Los Muertos - the Day of the Dead celebrations. 

    There will be 3 components to this show; 
    1. A photo show of gravesites, cemetaries and roadside altars.
    2. A show of cigar box altars.
    3. A show of 2D and 3D artwork pertaining to the Day of the Dead.

    Entry deadline for artwork for this show is August 21 and notifications of acceptance will be sent September 4. Delivery of artwork is on September 30, from 11:00-1:00pm. The show will run from October 1 - November 6, 2010. Pickup for artwork at the end of the show is November 7 during 11:00-1:00pm. This show is open to members and non members. Fees are as follows:
    $5.00 for each entry accepted for members and $10.00 for each entry accepted for non members.

        Three hour "Monotype Madness" sessions during any day we are open for $15.00; all supplies included. Those who have never taken encaustic before may take this; space is limited so let us know what day and time to schedule you in and we'll get you registered...(schedule below)

        You may submit up to 5 monotypes in our Holiday Bazaar; see theencausticcenter.com for more info.

    Ongoing;

    1. Full Beginner Workshops (find beginner workshop on the schedule below to choose from) all supplies included! Beginner workshops are $100.00 and you will learn a full range of techniques including collage, masking, texture, transfers and much more.

    2After a full beginner workshop you can come for Workdays where you will then be working independently, all supplies included but you may choose to bring favorite papers or transfers etc., (look for where it says workdays to choose from) all supplies included:

    Come for a 3 hour half day for $15.00 or

    Come for a full 6 hour workday for $30.00

    3. After you have taken a beginner workshop you can take any Intermediate Workshop for $100.00 delving further into, texture, monotypes, stencils, drawing, painting and photography techniques with wax to name a few.

    Visual Art League of Lewisville artist Ken Caperton will be exhibiting his drawings at the Lewisville Library from August 1st through August 29th.

     

    The Visual Art League of Lewisville is located at 701 S. Stemmons Fwy., #115 in the Lewisville West Shopping Center, west of 1-35 between Main Street and Fox Avenue.

    Kaligrafos, The Dallas Calligraphy Society presents a free family event, “In Celebration of Calligraphy”, from August 7 through August 29. The exhibit is an eclectic collection of original calligraphic works by more than 20 artists in a variety of lettering styles from ancient to modern. Presentations include broadsides, books, functional and non-functional forms. Meet the artists Sunday, August 8 at 2 pm. The exhibit will be held at the Irving Arts Center Main Gallery, 3333 N.     The AIR/HMC invites interested visual artists, writers, performers to submit application for its residency program in December-January. The goal is to provide a supportive community with uninterrupted time to work.  AIR/HMC, Budapest is an international meeting point for the arts.  Its aim is to support and encourage contemporary artistic creation, research and debate.  The purpose of this program is to offer a platform to promote the exchange of artistic discourses from artists with different artistic backgrounds and from different geographical origins.  

    AIR/HMC is open to artists of all practices: drawing, painting, literature, video, photography, performance.

    During the artist’s stay, committee members will be invited to individual visits to the workshops. Our workshop visiting program will feature art professionals added with personalized invitations to curators, art critics and heads of international institutions.

    Applicants are expected to speak and understand English.

    While HMC does not provide funding for residencies, we are helping to facilitate the creation of program, the cost of the exhibitions and cover %40 of total cost, artists cover %60.

    I will be adding a 4th session to the summer schedule this year. The subject of this session is "COLOR". 

     

    "COLOR" will provide you with information about the elements necessary to achieve beautiful, clean colors. We will discuss transparent through opaque paints, warms and cools, whites , etc, as well as colors which mix together well (and those that don't).

     

    As usual, in my classes, there will be homework. Mainly mixing colors such as lovely violets and luscious greens.

    Exhibition Opportunity: International Call to Artists, Architects + Designers

    The BECA Foundation is pleased to present SHIFT, an exhibition of new works of art + design featuring works that express, reveal, embody or address a change or movement on some level – be it social, cultural, physical, metaphysical, political, technological or any other relative shift. For the purpose of this Call, submitting artists, architects and designers are encouraged to freely interpret the meaning of the word ‘shift’. 

     

    Those at least 18 years of age from any country are eligible to submit their works for consideration according to the guidelines below. The BECA Foundation will host the exhibition at New Studio A.D., a new multi-functional studio, exhibition and event space located in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. The space allocated for the exhibition is 650 sqft (60 sq meters) with a ceiling height of 14 feet (4.3 meters) allowing the exhibition to fill a full 9,100 cubic feet (258 meters cubed) of viewing space. Of the entries submitted, three individual artists, architects, designers, duos, groups or collectives will be selected by BECA Foundation directors + advisors to receive the exhibition opportunity which will run from September 1 – 14, 2010 with an opening reception from 6 – 8pm on September 3rd, during Downtown Albuquerque’s First Friday ArtsCrawl. Wallis, represented locally by Southwest Art Gallery, will be holding a 3 day workshop, November 9, 10, & 11,  9:30 to 4:30, at the Asel Art Supply, 2701 Cedar Springs Dr. , Dallas, Texas.  Note the DATE and LOCATION change from the original notice earlier this year.

We'll spend this hour with Mark Frauenfelder, founder of the popular blog boingboing.net, editor in chief of the do-it-yourself publication Make Magazine and author of the new book "Made by Hand: Searching for Meaning in a Throwaway World" (Portfolio, 2010).
