Revived with Light: An Exploration of Expired Photographic Media

July 7-August 4, 2018

Reception: Saturday, July 7 (7-9 PM)

Expired photographic materials (film, paper, instant camera sheets) are excellent media for the curious artist who enjoys experimenting with unorthodox processes that can potentially capture truly unique photographs.  The Revived with Light exhibition examines the strong appeal of degraded film and paper that are past their intended use-by date.  Although expired photographic materials do not guarantee reliable results, artists explore their use because they can yield stunning surreal images not achievable with other methods.  What to some photographers would seem like a deterrent (haze streaks, color shifts, larger grain, necessary exposure modifications) appears attractive and intriguing to the artists participating in this exhibition who see those characteristics not as deficiencies or constraints, but rather as an incomparable vehicle of personal expression.

Participating Artists: Laura Barth, Carley Blackman-Yonkman, Jacqueline Blanco, Shawn Campbell, Michael Carter, Julia Cartwright, Francisco  Chavira, Caitlin Cloninger, Al Currie, Robert Curry, Elisabeth Dare, Carlos Donjuan, J. M. Golding, Elizabeth Groth, Ashley Innis, David Janesko, Sarah Knudtson, Joanna LaGrone-Headrick, J. Jason Lazarus, Christine Lenzen, Barbara Mabli, Jackie MacLelland, Sharon  O’Callaghan Shero, Rebecca  Payne , Steve Reeves, Jonathan Reynolds, Francis Schanberger, Ginger Sisco Cook, Jemison Thorsby, Kate Wichlinski, and Claire Wiedman.

Curated by Enrique Fernández Cervantes.

Road Trip: Photographic Journeys of the Dead Photographers Society

July 7-August 4, 2018

Reception: Saturday, July 7 (7-9 PM)

The Bath House Cultural Center presents Road Trip: Photographic Journeys of the Dead Photographers Society, an exhibition featuring fourteen art photographers who are part of a restless and spontaneous group from North Texas that explores new places and revisits old ones.

The exhibition features images taken in some of the most recent purposeful road trips that the group also calls “ kerouacing with cameras,” an endeavor which allows the artists to journal their experiences while embarking on a trip without a predetermined destination.  The organizers of the exhibition say that it is not unusual for the group to get an unexpected message from a member with enticing announcements such as: “It’s Big Bend Time.  Leaving in the Morning!  Are you in?” that encourage the artists to get their camera gear ready for yet another fruitful and creative road trip.

The artist participating in the exhibition are Ken Blackburn, Jen Brimmage, Célia Dias, Guy Giersch, Peta Jones, Brian Magnuson, Roddy Parkson, Sonja Quintero, Sam Reeves, Sam Rogers, Terry Rouhier, Don Simmons, Nelson Spencer, and Steve Wriedt.

Free and open to the public.

Contaminate: Oil

Opening on July 7, 2018

Reception: Saturday, July 7 (7-9 PM)

The White Rock Lake Museum presents Contaminate: Oil, an exhibition of prints created with traditional and digital photographic techniques by Tiffany Milow that perfectly marries the power of art, the history of the lake as our Dallas water supply with the powerful message of “What are we doing with our water?”  This collection presents a stunning visual display with a provocative message about what we are failing to think about water.
