The Visual Arts at the 2014 State Fair of Texas


Fried food, carnival rides, the animal barns, and Big Tex are the mainstays of the fair experience, but don’t forget the arts! The 2014 State Fair of Texas opens on Friday, September 26 and extends through October 19. For more information see the website: http://www.bigtex.com

Artwork from the annual Creative Arts contests are on display in the Creative Arts Building. Results are already posted for the Arts: http://bigtex.com/creativearts/

The Fall Garden Program also includes an outdoor sculpture exhibit with more than 20 pieces placed along First Avenue from the lagoon to the Band Shell.  Amazing local artists loan the State Fair sculptures so visitors can enjoy and interact with the artwork.  For a list of artists click here: http://bigtex.com/fun/gardenshow/

The Texas Discovery Gardens, located on the Fair Park grounds, hosts regular art exhibits. This month’s treat includes a book installation by VET and Sheila Cunningham.

The African American Museum of Dallas has a small but rich collection of African masks, folk art, sculptures, gold weights, and textiles. Currently on exhibit is “Quilting Sisters of Color” through  December 31, 2014.
