COLLABORATIVE WOOD AND PAPER PIECES ON VIEW IN THE GOUGH GALLERY

The Greater Denton Arts Council presents PAPER + WOOD: a collaborative exhibit by Shelley Scott and Delaney Smith, opening in the Gough Gallery on July 7, 2013.Both artists create work that explores the ideas of art, functionality, and sculpture.

Shelley Scott creates unique pieces of handmade sculpture and furniture.  Scott says, “I approach furniture as sculpture and most of my work is minimally functional. I use the stack-lamination process, an additive process where I layer and glue wood together to construct a form. With this process I create organic forms while using materials that I respectfully collect. The unique properties I find in bark, branches, roots, abandoned furniture, and industrial waste often suggests an idea or form to me. To blend the multiple scraps and different wood grains I interweave elements, working as if I were creating a patchwork quilt, focusing on color, line, and pattern.”

Delaney Smith is interested in the book as an object and how people interact with or relate to its form. She says, “We are taught at a young age to preserve books. In contrast, the viewers of my books are invited to physically alter the pages, which develop into a unique story of marks. The accumulative marks created by the viewer create the content of the book, revealing the individual decisions of the person. As a result of interaction with the artwork, the viewers of my interactive books have a sense of investment and authority over what happens to the artwork. The life of the piece is dependent on the individual that interacts with it, and the work is considered unfinished until the moment the viewer begins to alter it.”

The exhibition will open with a reception on Sunday, July 7, 2013, 2:00 – 4:00 pm. The artists will be in attendance.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

The Center for the Visual Arts is located at 400 E. Hickory Street, Denton, Texas, 76201.
