Miles Cleveland and Carol Cook at Valley House

Join us, Saturday, July 11, 6:00-8:30 pm, for the opening reception for two artists new to Valley House: Mississippi painter Miles Cleveland Goodwin and Dallas sculptor Carol Cook.

“The Waiting Room” features recent fired-clay sculpture by Dallas artist Carol Cook, who states, “When I make a figure I try to feel what my subjects feel from the inside out. I choose the motif of people in their furniture because people’s lives are played out and influenced by the chairs they occupy. These sculptures are part of my ongoing response to a special, sometimes forgotten, segment of our population and the inspirational encounters I have had with them.” Cook, an occupational therapist, earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Dallas. Carol Cook will give an artist talk on Saturday, July 25, at 11:00 am.

Working in his open-air studio, Miles Cleveland Goodwin is deeply in touch with the rural landscape where his extended family lives and where people depend on one another. Goodwin’s ruminative portrayals, full of earthy metaphor and soulful intuition, engage us in reciprocal story-telling in the spirit of the literature and Delta Blues of the Deep South. After a tour of duty in the US Navy, Goodwin earned a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, and eventually returned to coastal Mississippi – to the land and people he knows so well.

Both exhibitions will be on view through August 15. Preview the exhibitions online at

Coinciding with the opening of these exhibitions, Valley House is pleased to participate in the 4th annual Dallas Gallery Day tomorrow! This is the event’s first All-City celebration of Dallas galleries featuring 29 participating spaces. There will be a complimentary Gallery Day T-shirt, courtesy of Printed Threads, with a gift bag for the first 20 patrons at each gallery.

We always enjoy hearing back from you, and we look forward to seeing you!
