Internationally renowned French artist Jacques Lamy (°1946, Paris, France) pursued his study of art at the Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. As a student, he was awarded the coveted Prix de Rome in 1971. After spending several years studying the painting style and technique of Classical and Renaissance painters, Lamy developed his signature style that merges the centuries old technique of buon fresco with modern materials. Lamy taught his style of painting throughout Europe and Africa prior to settling in the United States in 1985.
Post-Cubist Lamy creates mixed media artworks and paintings. By merging several seemingly incompatible worlds into a new universe, Lamy wants to amplify the astonishment of the spectator by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil poetic images that leave traces and balances on the edge of recognition and alienation.
By choosing mainly formal solutions, Lamy investigates the dynamics of landscape, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what landscape means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination.
His works establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on concrete questions that determine our existence. By exploring the concept of landscape in a nostalgic way, he uses a visual vocabulary that addresses many different social and universal issues. The work incorporates time as well as space – a fictional and experiential universe that only emerges bit by bit.
Lamy’s works are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our
seemingly certain reality is questioned. By applying a poetic and often metaphorical language, he tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations.
His works appear as dreamlike images in which fiction and reality meet, well- known tropes merge, meanings shift, past and present fuse. Time and memory always play a key role.
Lamy considers himself a post-Cubist artist turned towards a more classical approach to painting with elements of Surrealism and Cubism; concerned with questions of form, volume, dimension, relative position and the relationship between elements, along with ethereal geometric properties of space.
In addition to his smaller works, Lamy has painted numerous large scale trompe d’oeil and classical murals using his novel fresco technique. The artist is frequently commissioned for this type of work and have become popular favorites at leading American and European galleries and public spaces.
Jacques Lamy currently lives in Dallas, Texas with his lovely wife Odeil.
