a solo exhibition of new paintings

DALLAS, Texas (February 4, 2017)– Haley-Henman proudly presents Cindy J. Holmes’ solo exhibition of new paintings titled Thus Spake Derrida.  This is her third solo exhibition at Haley-Henman, which focuses on the human figure. The opening reception on Saturday, March 11 from 5-8 pm is free and open to the public.  The exhibition is from March 9 through April 1, 2017.

For this exhibition, Holmes has pushed the boundaries toward abstraction. Indeed, these paintings reference the Bay Area Figurative Movement that has generated itself as a distinct style since the 1950s, and which continues today in Holmes’s work.  But her existential position is different.  Instead of reintegrating elements of realism into painting, such as what the Bay Area artist did when they went beyond Abstract Expressionism, Holmes starts with realism and then takes it apart.

For Holmes, the figure is not stepping into an abstraction.  Her process breaks the rules of figurative artwork, and in this deconstructed way, removes the binary oppositions of beauty/ugly, whole/parts, man/woman.
Holmes allusion to Nietzsche in the title of her exhibition resonates with her paintings as “…authentic art, which allows freedom above things.  We need all exuberant, floating, dancing, mocking, childish, and blissful art lest we loose our freedom above things our ideal demands of us…” (Nietzsche 1882, The Gay Science: With a Prelude in Rhymes and an Appendix of Songs (1974), translated with a commentary, Walter Kaufman, N.Y., Vintage Books, p. 164).
