Artist Talk & Reception with Martin Lam Nguyen, C.S.C. – Nov. 3 at UD’s Haggerty Gallery

You are warmly invited …

Please join us for the closing reception of Moments, a solo exhibition of works by Rev. Martin Lam Nguyen, C.S.C, this Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, from 5-8 p.m. An artist talk is being given in the Art History Auditorium at 5 p.m.at the University of Dallas with the reception following directly in the gallery. An artist catalog is being published for the occasion of the exhibition and will be available on the night. The exhibition ends this Sunday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m., do not miss out!

A Roman Catholic priest from Vietnam, Nguyen will be transforming the gallery into a large installation for quiet meditation and reflection on the present moment.

The exhibition brings together three multi-year projects: Mountain Waits (1998-1999), Lucie (2001-2005), and Painting of the Social Network (2007-present). Occupying every inch of the gallery, this vast installation features thousands of cataloged moments, each carefully painted or drawn and then presented in a grid-like format. The result is a work of abounding repetition yet permeated with individuality, as each picture, like the moments they depict, reads as unique and personal.

“It is a room for meditation and it really resembles life,” says Nguyen, “the connections, the disconnections, the facts, the fragility of all of it and yet the power of life.”

Devoted priest, long-serving educator and accomplished artist, Nguyen brings the many parts of his life together in the studio. Meditation and prayer join the rhythmic stroke of intricate line work. Like ink and water on paper, juxtaposing lessons from a life marred by war mix together with joyful religious service.

“Many of the things are sad, but the bottom line of this life is good,” said Nguyen. “Life is very precious. It’s a positive message.”

Nguyen is an Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame in the Department of Art, Art History and Design; he has been teaching there since 1995. In 1989, he became a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross after fleeing Vietnam as a refugee a decade earlier.
