TEXAS PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS:
ENTER ORIGINAL ARTWORK TO COMPETE FOR YEAR-LONG EXHIBIT IN DALLAS ARTS DISTRICT, CASH PRIZE
The Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition announces Aug. 29 deadline for 8th annual competition
DALLAS – The Catholic Foundation has announced a call for submissions to the 8th Annual Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition. The Foundation is accepting original work from Texas professional artists now through Friday, August 29, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.
The winning artist will receive a $2,500 stipend and have his or her work featured for one year as a 28-foot-long by 9-foot-wide mural in the Catholic Foundation Plaza, located in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. Honorable mentions will receive $250 each.
“We invite all Texas professional artists to consider submitting their original artwork to the 8th Annual Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition,” said J. Matthew Kramer, president and CEO of The Catholic Foundation. “The quality and variety of the work we have received in years past has been impressive, as this competition comes with not only a cash prize for the winner, but a unique opportunity for public display for one year in the Dallas Arts District.”
The Catholic Foundation Plaza is a 3,900-square-foot public space on the grounds of the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, across the street from the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The Plaza is surrounded by the buildings of Pritzker Prize-winning architects, as well as renowned museums including the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas Museum of Art. A favorite among locals and tourists, The Catholic Foundation Plaza and winning artwork are also featured in the Business Council for the Arts’ Public ArtWalk Dallas. Dedicated in 2006, the Plaza was a gift from The Catholic Foundation to the Dallas community to commemorate the Foundation’s 50th anniversary. The winning artwork will be displayed on the Plaza’s art wall, which currently displays last year’s winning piece, “When the Troops Come Marching Home to the City of Dallas, What a Celebration That Will Be,” by Cornelious Brackens, Jr.
Once the winning piece is selected by a panel of highly respected members of the local arts community, it will be unveiled during a public dedication ceremony in fall 2013. This year’s Selection Committee includes one representative from The Catholic Foundation and one representative from the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe; Cindy M. Gummer, owner of The Enchanted Galleries; Katherine Wagner, CEO of the Business Council for the Arts; Patricia B. Meadows, Art Connections; David C. Hickman, local sculptor; Pamela Nelson, Dallas artist; and Gary Skotnicki of Architexas, the architectural firm and designer of the Plaza.
Professional artists living in Texas are invited to submit one original work of art. Submissions must measure 28 inches by 9 and 2/3 inches and must be in keeping with the location of the Plaza on the Cathedral grounds but do not require a religious theme.
