Sumi ink painting uses techniques found in Japanese ink painting. The goal is simplification and a suggestion of the object the artist sees. This style was heavily influenced by the Oriental understanding that black ink is not simply black. It has many different shades, representing the highest level of color simplification. Traditionally a white surface is used and within this class rice paper will be used as well as students learning to create their ink using a stone. The classroom atmosphere will be quiet and meditative with Japanese music played during those times when the instructor, Mieko, is allowing students to work. Unlike many of today’s art classes, this will be very different and an experience that is quite unique.
