Outdoor Landscape  Painting Workshop

Hosted by The O’Keefe Studio

Join artist Ray Larrow for an exciting landscape painting workshop where participants will learn everything from A-Z regarding successful execution of landscape paintings (en plein air).  Participants can expect to create multiple unique paintings from specific locations in the beautiful sculpture garden at Valley House Gallery, here in Dallas, TX.  The workshop will begin with an overview of the tools, supplies and techniques needed for a painter of any level to achieve their artistic desires in relationship to the landscape motif.  Ray will discuss color mixing, brushes, substrates and surfaces, compositional tactics, as well as how to realistically complete a comprehensive painting, on-site, in under three hours.  This workshop is appropriate for beginners and practiced painters alike and will provide invaluable knowledge towards furthering a lifetime of Fine Art Painting.

Dates, Times and Locations:

Friday, October 10th, 7-9pm – Introductory lecture by Ray Larrow (at The O’Keefe Studio)

Saturday, October 11th, 1:00 – 4:00pm – Paint in the landscape with instruction from Ray in Valley House Gallery’s 4.3-acre sculpture garden

Sunday, October 12th, 1:00 – 4:00pm – Paint in the landscape with instruction from Ray in Valley House Gallery’s 4.3-acre sculpture garden

Thursday, October 16th, 7:00 – 8:30pm – Ray will give a lecture and powerpoint presentation on – painting – at The O’Keefe Studio

Friday, October 17th, 1:00 – 4:00pm – Paint in the landscape with instruction from Ray in Valley House Gallery’s 4.3-acre sculpture garden

Saturday, October 18th, 5:00 – 7:00pm – Closing critique of participants work. Michael O’Keefe will join Ray Larrow for this critique that will take place at The O’Keefe Studio

Cancellation policy:
In the event of cancellation after September 26th, $250.00 will be refunded if someone from the waiting list is able to attend. No refund for cancellations after October 3rd.

About Ray Larrow:

Michael O’Keefe and Ray Larrow, both originally from New England, met when they entered the MFA program together at Southern Methodist University in 2004.  Ray received his MFA in Painting from SMU in 2006.  While in graduate school, Michael considered Ray his most respected colleague.  Prior to attending SMU, Ray received a BFA in painting and drawing from Boston University in 2000.  Ray has taught at various colleges, including SMU, University of North Texas, and Holyoke Community College, where he has been since 2007.  Currently, Ray is also a co-founder and instructor at The Umbrella Tank, an independent teaching studio in Holyoke, MA.

– Oil colors (Winsor & Newton recommended):
Titanium white
French ultramarine (blue)
Sap green
Chrome yellow hue
Yellow ochre
Winsor red
Raw sienna
Burnt umber
Ivory black
Payne’s gray

 

– Brushes:
Princeton Series 5400 – Long Handle
Round brushes: sizes 2,4,8,10,12
Bright brushes: sizes 2,6
[with regard to brushes, you may certainly bring or use alternative types and sizes you might already possess]

 

– (1) medium sized metal painting knife (wooden handle)
– (3) very cheap bristle brushes, 1/2″ and 1″
– (1) medium sized tube of burnt umber acrylic paint
