Introduction to Still Life Painting at TSOFA starts Feb. 21st

Length: 5 weeks, limited to 4 students
Time: Wednesdays, 10am – 1pm starting February 21st
The goal of this class is to introduce students to fundamental painting practices needed to set up a strong piece of work. Students will learn the core concepts of the block-in, separating light from shadow, setting up proper value relationships, getting the light effect and more. We will also look at still-life paintings from today and the past in order to expand our knowledge of the craft. Students will set up their own still-life by the end of the course.
Week 1: Introduce/Review core drawing concepts
Week 2: The Block-in; capturing the essence of the set-up
Week 3: Value studies in black and white; capturing the light effect
Week 4: Students set up still-life; examples from today and the past
Week 5: Continue still-life; review
Materials: vine charcoal, Canson Moonstone Mi-Teintes drawing paper (5 sheets), Burnt Umber, Ivory Black, Titanium White (no student-grade paints), assortment of bristle brushes (filberts and flats), canvases, Gamsol, paper towels
