I was listening to a very poignant story on NPR about a chimpanzee raised in a family as a scientific experiment when beginning this painting. Lucy ended up being taken to an island but had difficulty adjusting to a natural habitat.

My art practice here involves using nostalgic Golden Book Encyclopedia pages embedded in the paint along with map fragments and poetry and hymn pages. They are mostly buried by paint. I set up contrasting rhythms with the civilized checker board grid of the tablecloth versus the organic Matisse inspired background pattern. For me this helps embody the story of Lucy.
