Modigliani’s Nude has an overall pattern based on a piece of Italian tapestry upholstery fabric. It lends a cohesive force tying the foreground to the background. My favorite pattern artists are Klimt for his metallics and Hundertwasser for his colorful concentric shapes. Hundertwasser was the inspiration for my painting: Gaia, Earth Mother. I also love to create mandala paintings by folding a square of paper into many sections and then creating the pattern on one section and tracing it all around the full paper, as in Whirling Mandala. This painting was inspired by a silver necklace I purchased in India and all the bright sari colors worn by women there.
