WestBend Debuts Public Art Program with Snap & Seek July 20

Collection of 26 pieces is one of the largest concentrations of public art in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas (July 11, 2017) – Selfies and shares abound with the latest wave of public art at WestBend, Trademark Property Co.’s University District mixed-use development. Twelve new works splashed across the property expand its already impressive public art program, bringing added color, character and a unique spirit to the property.

The new works showcase a variety of style and medium by both local and national artists, including 10 murals by Dallas-based artist Kyle Steed, a site-specific “LOVE” sculpture by San Francisco artist Laura Kimpton, and a mural by local artist Lauren Childs. These join prior works by local artist Devon Nowlin and a rotating photography exhibit from the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.

“When it comes to retail places today, it’s all about creating experiences. Carefully curated public art activates a space and makes it unique, all while contributing to the vibe of the neighborhood and the city,” said Terry Montesi, CEO, Trademark Property Co. “Most importantly, art is to be enjoyed. We invite our guests to interact with the works and share them with one another, and make them a part of their life. We want WestBend to be an extension of the world-class Fort Worth Arts District.”

New art at WestBend includes:

·         Kyle Steed:  Dallas-based artist Kyle Steed makes his Fort Worth debut with 10 WestBend murals that include quotes and references to famous Texans. There are a total of nine murals in the parking garage, consisting of five elevator vestibule works; three small works in stairwells, including a Willie Nelson quote, and Happy Trails mural on the exit wall; as well as a Patsy Cline quote near Drybar.

·         Laura Kimpton: Kimpton’s steel “LOVE” sculpture is celebratory and optimistic in spirit, sending a positive message to WestBend visitors. Located in the green space near Woodhouse Day Spa, the sculpture includes hundreds of programmable LED lights that change color at night. The piece is a part of Kimpton’s Monumental World Series that began at the 2009 Burning Man Festival and has since had permanent installations at the Apple store in San Francisco’s Union Square and Santa Rosa, Calif.; Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada; and additional appearances at dozens of art and music festivals across the globe.

·         Lauren Childs: Childs’ first mural, “The Little Things,” depicts succulents with vibrant color and texture, bordering on sculptural, and is located between Woodhouse Day Spa and CorePower Yoga. An advocate for local art, Childs co-founded Fort Works Art, which began as an event-based pop-up organization and has now opened its first permanent gallery space in the Cultural District in Fort Worth.

In addition to these new works, WestBend also recently unveiled the second iteration in its Amon Carter Museum of American Art series. Thanks to a partnership with the Amon Carter, WestBend is home to a rotating selection of nine, 4-by-6-foot reproductions from the museum’s renowned photography collection, presented on backlit film and displayed in lightboxes. Each iteration of the series is curated by the Amon Carter and is on display at WestBend for six-month intervals. The second iteration launched this month and will be on display through the end of the year.

Other public art at WestBend includes five photographic murals by Fort Worth artist and TCU graduate, Devon Nowlin.  The murals, which face the Trinity River and Trinity River Trails and Tom Thumb, capture the shopping and dining experience, health and fitness, and the natural surroundings of WestBend.

To celebrate its public art program, WestBend will host a #WestBendLove Snap & Seek on Thursday, July 20 at 7 p.m. with artists Lauren Childs, Devon Nowlin and an Instagram takeover by Kyle Steed. The event kicks off on Level 6, the top floor of the free parking garage located behind Tyler’s, and the first 50 guests to check in will receive a free swag bag illustrated by Steed. #WestBendLove will feature a polaroid scavenger hunt, frozen treats, drinks from HG Sply Co., surprises, and the opportunity to meet the artists in attendances. To RSVP, click here.

WestBend’s public art is one aspect of a property redevelopment focused on evolving the University retail district by delivering a walkable critical mass of retail and restaurants, urban-style pedestrian experiences, and Trinity River/Trinity Trails connectivity. In addition to public art, the redevelopment includes newretail, trailside restaurants, office space, and property amenities. Bartaco and Warby Parker recently announced they will open new locations at the property.

The redevelopment will continue with phase II, which will include a property expansion onto the adjacent 3.5-acre tract immediately south of WestBend. Conceptual planning is underway to develop additional mixed-use space featuring added ground floor retail, a boutique hotel, and multi-family units.

At full build-out, WestBend will include 670,000 square feet of walkable urban retail, restaurant, office, multi-family, and hospitality space.

Fall 2017 ArtsGoggle – REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!

fallartsgoggle

Saturday, October 21, 2017 | Noon to 10pm
Join us as we celebrate the 15th anniversary of ArtsGoggle,
the Near Southside’s most beloved community arts event.

What is ArtsGoggle?
Since its inception in 2003, ArtsGoggle has evolved into a popular festival of the arts in this eclectic neighborhood of historic elegance and urbanism. This free to the public, family-friendly event attracts a crowd as diverse as the neighborhood itself with live music, artistic displays of every kind, food, drink, and fun for everyone.
ArtsGoggle is unlike any event in Fort Worth, as residents from the nearby Fairmount, Mistletoe Heights, Berkeley Place, and Ryan Place neighborhoods are joined by medical district workers and visitors from throughout the region for a community arts festival focused in the Near Southside’s Magnolia Village. One of the event’s goals – along with celebrating art of all kinds – is to showcase the unique and memorable character of the Near Southside. Visitors are invited to park their cars and rediscover this revitalized urban neighborhood by foot or by bicycle, including Fort Worth Bike Sharing bikes.

ArtsGoggle prides itself in hosting a casual, approachable and vibrant environment to appreciate art and learn about the talents within our own community.  For more than a decade, ArtsGoggle has been the launch pad for many artists showing their work for the first time.  ArtsGoggle provides a supportive setting for both aspiring and professional visual artists, to display, sell and seek comment on their artwork.
Embracing all arts, the event also boasts an impressive program of performance art and music.  The 2016 ArtsGoggle featured more than 90 bands, many of which have members who live or work in the Near Southside.  The entertainment at ArtsGoggle is diverse and showcases music from a variety of cultures and styles.  The event partners with arts organizations across Fort Worth to draw attention to their programs.  In years past ArtsGoggle has hosted the Fort Worth Opera for pop-up concerts; showcased Ballet Folklorico de Azteca for a colorful dance performance; and hosted The Bucket List Jazz Band, a band dedicated to the lifelong dream of 90-year-old Jim Milam to resurrect Dixieland Jazz.
HOURS
Event hours are Noon to 10pm, a full day to offer patrons time to experience all that ArtsGoggle has to offer and will allow greater sales opportunities for our artists.
FOCUSED EVENT MAP
ArtsGoggle will focus on a street festival and venues within the Magnolia Urban Village. This condensed site map will provide a more manageable and enjoyable experience for our artists and patrons.
AFFORDABLE FOR ARTISTS
The event is committed to keeping artist’s fees affordable by requiring a registration fee of only $45, with no others fees to participate.  Each year as ArtsGoggle grows, so do the operating costs of the event.  In order to produce an even higher quality event with the same great neighborhood experience, the money collected provides vital funding to support improved communications, pre-event promotions, programs, signage and more.
FREE TO THE PULIC
ArtsGoggle is free to the public, with no wristbands, tickets, admission costs.  Unlike many popular for-profit events in Fort Worth, ArtsGoggle is produced by a not-for-profit community organization and thus has no need to produce revenue.  Instead, the event is exclusively focused on creating an environment to appreciate and celebrate the arts.  All funds raised for the event will be dedicated to producing a memorable and successful experience for artists, venues and patrons of all ages.
EVENT PRODUCER
ArtsGoggle is presented by Near Southside, Inc., the non-profit redevelopment organization working to revitalize this important urban neighborhood, in partnership with our sister organization Historic Southside, Inc.  The event has regularly drawn crowds of 7,000-10,000 and in 2016 experienced incredible growth with a crowd estimated at 40,000 attendees filling the streets with visitors of all ages.  The scene is a wonderfully pleasant testament to the community spirit that fills the Near Southside.
ArtsGoggle is an expansion of Near Southside Inc.’s efforts to promote the Near Southside and build the community fabric essential to our continued development.  Since our founding in 1995, NSI has led development and promotional initiatives that have successfully transformed the Near Southside into one of the region’s most distinctive and vibrant urban districts.  Signs of NSI’s 20-year revitalization effort are evident throughout the district, perhaps most apparent along Magnolia Avenue, S. Main Street and Park Place Avenue, home to the city’s most eclectic selection of locally-owned restaurants and pubs.
Tax Information
Historic Southside, Inc., managed by Near Southside, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Sponsorship contributions made to Historic Southside, Inc. are deductible as charitable donations.  W-9 forms will be provided at your request.

MAGNOLIA VILLAGE: Taking it to the Street
ArtsGoggle is an outdoor street party spreading more than a mile across the Magnolia Village. Artists wanting to participate outdoors at the Magnolia Village street party can request this location on their ArtsGoggle Artist Application, and can even request a specific block. All artists will be allotted a 10’x10′ space, unless a larger space is requested.
