Deep Ellum Arts Festival 2017

The all-volunteer Deep Ellum Community Association hosts a “Deep Ellum Village” within the Deep Ellum Arts Festivall

which will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 7, 8 and 9 this year.  We are having a special emphasis on providing an opportunity for artists and performers to actively demonstrate and practice their craft.  For artists, we will have an area for you to actively produce your art during the festival.  In addition, you may wish to rent a booth to sell your art, help us produce artistic signage and/or work in the marbling tent and actively demonstrate your artistic skills there.  If you are a performer, we would love to include you in the activities happening in the Deep Ellum Village during the Festival.

The opportunities are the following:

  1. Rent a booth to sell your art or split a booth with another artist. Booths cost $350 for a 10×10 but are discounted 50% to Deep Ellum based artists and handcrafters. https://form.jotform.com/50564567835970
  1. Be an “active” artist or performer for at least 4 hours and share a booth with that day’s other active artists and performers at no charge.“Active artists” sign up for a time slot and produce/create their art in the designated area during that time slot. https://form.jotform.com/70066448693969
  1. Help produce the artwork which will serve as the signage within the Deep Ellum Village.
  2. Help in the “marbling” booth and demonstrate your artistic talent and offer information about yourself to those you assist.
  3. Enter the Arts 4 Dumpsters contest and potentially win up to $4,250.  See details at www.DallasZeroWaste.com

IDENTITY Artist Residency Program in Oak Cliff – deadline Feb. 15

identity residency

Artist Residency Program: Proposals due February 15, 2017

Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.

 -Cesar Chavez

Sunset Art Studios and the Oak Cliff Cultural Center are now accepting proposals for Identity: I am one, I am many, a collaborative residency and exhibition program.

Sunset Art Studios, from artists Rachel Rushing and Emily Riggert, is a social practice studio in Elmwood run with the core principle of connecting people with the arts in an approachable way. This focus emphasizes the value of multiple viewpoints from diverse groups of individuals. The artistic process opens up the mind to creative problem solving, and seeing complex issues in fresh ways.

In our current political climate this mentality is vital to the survival of a civil and democratic society where all people are created equal and valued equally. The arts are manifestations of these values.

Inspired by the words of Cesar Chavez, Identity: I am one, I am many is a group exhibition exploring the ways we define ourselves and the world around us. Artists in Residence at Sunset Art Studios, and the SAS coordinating artists look at identity through the lens of culture, politics, gender, community, and more to forward discussions vital to our society.

Texas is a multicultural space home to veterans, students, immigrants, entrepreneurs, artists, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and friends. Through this program artists are encouraged to apply whose work considers these complex identities.

Two artists will be selected for 4-week residencies at Sunset Art Studios during the months of March and April 2016. Residents will be provided with

  • Shared studio space

  • Limited studio furniture

  • Large exhibition wall

  • Connections with local community members, activists, and galleries.

  • Free WIFI

Work produced during each residency will be included in the May 2016 I am one, I am many exhibition at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center along with the work of the Sunset Art Studios coordinating artists.

Eligibility

Artists must be 21+ to participate in this program, and must be residents within Dallas city limits. Artists of color, LGBT+, and women applicants are encouraged to apply. Special consideration will be given to those whose proposal incorporate community activation, participatory making or viewing experiences, and/or social engagement with the local neighborhood.

Proposals will only be accepted online HERE

Splendora Gardens is proud to present:
“THE FLOWER SHOW @ Splendora Gardens”
(an open call, every artist gets in art show about Flowers)
located in the beautiful and historic studio of James Surls and Charmaine Locke:
26041 Midline Road, Cleveland, TX 77328
March 25th, 2017 – April 23rd, 2017
Through their quiet beauty and grave symbolism, flowers continually capture the imagination and inspire the passions of artists. Many delight in the delicacy of petals illuminated by a late spring sun, animated by a gentle wind. The complex play of light, color, value, and texture compel the brush and the pen, the lyric and the tone. Others render flowers and gardens, and the myriad elements that complete them, as metaphors for the most profound aspects of human existence. They emerge out of the verdant mire to denote rebirth, fertility, peace, prosperity, purity, and as Juan Ferret notes in “The Power of Flowers,” spiritual liberation from earthly impulses.
Flowers give voice to our feelings. They adorn our most sacred ceremonies and grace our bodies in life’s important moments. They serve as gifts to our closest loved ones and those we wish to draw closer, and memorials to those we will miss. They embellish the commonplace, bringing joy to families on city windowsills and in country planters. And while coloring our days with vibrant and subtle hues, flowers also nourish new life; the flower’s highest value lies in its interactions in the complex of nature. It is a node, a point of collection, of both beauty and purpose. The dynamic essence of an organism, the flower reaches towards the sun as a lofty realization of its inverse, the root. And as one instant within a larger environment, whether garden or wilderness, it provides sustenance to other organisms. The garden in turn provides sanctuary from the commotion of life. Restful meditation or deep contemplation await those willing to release themselves into the order and elation of the garden, however modest. Although an invention, a vibrant balance of science and aesthetics, the garden symbolizes paradise, creation, and the perfection of nature.
Splendora Gardens is pleased to invite artists of all kinds to submit works to be exhibited, presented, or performed at “The Flower Show.” Whichever discipline you work within, no matter your level of “achievement,” or age, we are calling for works that express your unique interpretation of the theme of “flowers” and/or “gardens.” There will be no juror; every piece submitted will be shown. You are welcome to send visual art, read original poetry or prose, perform a song, or anything else for that matter. You can exhibit or perform works you’ve already created or make something new.
Scheduled visual artists (so far): James Surls, Charmaine Locke, Daniel Johnston, The Wheeler Bro’s, Ruby Surls, Alton Dulaney, and you…

Dallas Edition: Call for Nasty Women Exhibition

nastywoman

This is the Dallas sister of the Nasty Women exhibition launched in New York. It is one of many national exhibitions organized around the demonstration of solidarity among female artists and allies who identify with being a Nasty Woman in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, abortion rights, immigration rights, racial and environmental justice. It also serves as a fundraiser to support organizations defending these rights.

This call is open to Nasty Women Artists of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientations, gender or non-gender identifications, economic backgrounds, immigrants and non-immigrants.

This exhibition will take place on March 3rd, the anniversary of the 1913 Women’s Suffrage Parade on Washington. We hope to honor the struggle of our fore-mothers, while also acknowledging their shortcomings. It is no secret that historically feminism has been plagued by a general white-washing of equality with only the causes of cisgendered, straight, able bodied, white women being worth fighting for. This has been a mistake in the struggle for equality. The Dallas Nasty Women Exhibition encourages explorations of women’s history and women’s rights through all of the intersectional lenses those who identify as women must push through.

100% of proceeds from the sale of artworks will go to Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center. Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center is committed to the prevention of sexual violence in North Texas and compassionately serving those impacted by it. www.dallasrapecrisis.org

Dates:
March 3, 7 – 9 pm reception and sale

March 4, gallery open 10 am – 2 pm cash/card and carry

Guidelines:
All work must be for sale. Any work that does not sell must be picked up by the artist. In an effort to raise the most funds while providing affordable art by great artists, we ask that you price your work no less than $20 and no more than $250.

Due to space limitations, work must not be larger than 12 inches in any direction. Works in any media are accepted (please email us regarding sound, video, or new media). All work must be ready to display (unframed work will be affixed to wall with clips or magnets)

While a submission fee is not required for this exhibition, there is a $5 suggested donation to offset the costs of the exhibition and support the efforts of the Studio, a space dedicated to free artist residencies in social practice and free community programming. Donations can be made here.

How to Submit Your Work:

Submission Forms must be received by February 17, 2017. The work itself must be dropped off at Sunset Studios on Sunday, February 26, between 12-3pm.

By submitting to the Nasty Women Exhibition you are agreeing to allow us to use your name and work image to help promote the exhibition. You are responsible for the drop off/shipping of your work, if it does not sell you are responsible for the pick up/shipping costs for its return. If you will be shipping work, please use 1811 Balboa Pl Dallas, TX 75224, and request a signature upon delivery.

For Baton Rouge, 2016 has proven to be a very difficult year. We have had shootings which have emphasized the racial tensions that mark out times. We have had record breaking floods that left people homeless or in tenuous situations, without their possessions or certainty of the future of their homes. On top of that, we are living through an election season that is causing tension in our town, state and country.

Artists through the ages have used their media to offer both veiled and overt social commentary. We are giving visual artists an opportunity to show how they are responding to the events of 2016. This is an opportunity to provide a forum for thought-provoking and insightful work.

New Year, New Low Price Booth Fee at Midtown Artwalk

midtowncall

New Booth Fee $25 and a huge update

I truly hope your holiday season was the best yet.

I have excellent news for all the artists. As you know, it’s been in the news about Valley View being demolished. Well, parts of it is being demolished and they did start on the demolition.

Eventually it will all be gone, however there will be at least six more Artwalks between now and then. I know this because several AMC staff told me their management told them that AMC extended their lease for another 6 months.

I am lowering the booth fee to $25 and changing up a few things.

To sign up contact Jaye, manager of Skypony Studio 3rdsaturdayartwalk@gmail.com or 214-938-0125

As many of you know, I manage Skypony Studio and we do very well because I stay open late nights every weekend. Including Artwalk weekends. So when many of you have some to me and said you don’t make that many sales, I realized that Skypony seemed to be the only gallery doing well.

That is not my only goal–I want everyone to succeed which is why I changed the setup time from 5 pm to 1 pm when I first took over Artwalk.

Now, I realized that still, many artists have given up on Valley View because of all the media attention regarding the demolition. Many artists closed their galleries, but I can assure you that when it’s time to leave for good, Skypony Studio will no longer be there. So as long as we are there, then there will be an Artwalk.

Now for the game changers.

Valley View is considered a dead mall. During opening night of Star Wars, I watched over 1,000 people flock to the movies and overheard many conversations about how the mall is dead. So if you have this many people confirming that–then we have an issue. A problem that needs to be solved.

This problem is your perception of Valley View as a dead mall.

Instead of seeing it as such, see it as an opportunity to show off your art. While it is still here, you have a chance to get out there and be seen. Sometimes it will be slow, others there will be a major movie release and AMC Valley View has the cheapest opening night tickets. $6 and $10 3D, which is why I emphasize too much about the movie crowd.

I’ve said before that you need quick selling items, but it’s been brought to my attention that many of you get people coming but not buying. So this bad thing can actually be turned into a great thing and here’s how:

Instead of seeking to make sales, you need to seek to make connections.

Ever heard of network marketing? Avon. Doterra, Mary Kay are all MLM’s which is a multi level marketing system. They use network marketing to make their money. It’s simply selling yourself to others without seeming like a desperate salesperson. I’ve read the book by Eric Worres called Go Pro. He specializes in the network marketing industry and he says make it your goal to always make at least two connections each day.

During the Artwalk you have the opportunity to make over a hundred connections. GMT has clients who frequent the Artwalks.

The goal now isn’t to make sales, but to make connections. Connections mean repeat customers. So what you need to do is invest in business cards and flyers, make yourself known. Use the Artwalk to promote your brand. Yes, you have a brand–you ARE your brand.

This is why I am lowering the booth fee to $25. I am looking for artists who want to promote their brands and focus on building those connections. By lowering the fee, you can save $35 and use it to invest in business cars, flyers. Design a 4X6 flyer and print it out at Walgreens. I pay $20 for around 100 of them. Turn your flyers into value by including a coupon for shopping in your gallery, online store, or for whatever you wish.

Valley View may be going away soon but right now, it is still here. And you can use it to make a name for yourself as an artist. You can take pictures of your booth, post them online, make a blog about them, and this will give you an image of a professional artist who is big enough to do shows. Meaning you are doing well.

When people buy from me, it’s because I don’t seem desperate even though those jewelry sales put food on the table. People can sense when you are too eager for a sale which is why I want artists who are interested in showing, rather than selling, their work. Here’s an example of a confident artist:

Imagine your booth and a person walking up to it. Instead of bombarding them, just greet them and introduce yourself. Hi, my name is Jaye and this is my work. Let me know if you have any questions.

Their usual response, “Oh wow YOU did this? It’s amazing!” Even though I am inside the gallery, people don’t seem to get that the jewelry is mine.

6 out of 10 people walk away. 4 out of 10 buy. But 10 out of 10 always return because we had a conversation about a particular piece. And they either bring a friend, or another person says, “Hey my friend so and so was here yesterday, are you the jewelry artist?”

This is how you get sales–by making yourself memorable.

So instead of coming to Artwalk hoping to make your booth fee–I lowered the fee so you can afford to come out and stand out while we still have Valley View.

CADD announces CADDfund 2017

caddfund

Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas Present

CADD FUNd 2017

Sunday, March 5th, 5:00 – 7:30 pm

3015 AT TRINITY GROVES
3015 Gulden Lane
Dallas, TX 75212

Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas will again celebrate creativity and community with a Sunday Soup Supper onMarch 5th at 3015 at Trinity Groves. CADD FUNd 2017 will be a fun, fast-paced evening of sharing innovative ideas about potential artistic projects. CADD FUNd 2017 will make possible a high-impact idea that needs the support of the DFW arts community.

The idea for the annual CADD FUNd was inspired by similar events throughout the United States such as Feast in Brooklyn, Incubate in Chicago and Spread in Santa Fe. Over the past several years, numerous organizations have taken the basic premise of a Sunday soup dinner – collect creative proposals, invite the public to pay, eat, and listen, and then democratically vote for a winner – and adapted it to their own local purposes.

This year’s CADD FUNd will be awarded to a current or previous B.A, B.F.A., M.A. or M.F.A. graduate or candidate from an institution within 100 miles of Dallas. Six finalists will be selected from all of the applicants by three esteemed jurors to be announced soon. (Past jurors included: Gabriel Ritter, Judy Deaton, William Rudolph, Michael Mazurak, Jed Morse and Justine Ludwig.)

During the event on March 5th, the finalists will present short proposals for original and yet-to-be-realized new projects. Members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions and then the audience participants will vote for their favorite project. After a short recess to tally the votes, the winner of CADD FUNd 2017 will be announced!

The CADD FUNd is $2500 – $7500 + and beyond. Funds are raised by ticket sales and will go to the winner chosen by the audience. Tickets are $40 per person and will go on sale in January. Tickets will not be available at the door. In an effort to make CADD FUNd 2017 as accessible as possible for the students and artists, $10 of each ticket sold will be applied to jurors’ fees and administrative costs in lieu of charging application fees.

The 2015 CADD FUNd was awarded to Rachel Rushing for her project- Sunset Art Studios: An Oak Cliff artist run studio and exhibition space. Named for the former Sunset Streetcar Line, Sunset Art Studios is a culturally invested art space. A group of local artists develop their work while providing the surrounding community opportunities to directly engage in the process of art. Ms. Rushing will give a short presentation at the event about her project, Sunset Art Studios.

While CADD FUNd is about raising much-needed cash, we hope that it will also be a forum to discuss the many other needs and resources that help make projects happen.

ABOUT CADD – Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas (CADD) is a non-profit membership organization of galleries formed in 2006 for the purpose of promoting the advancement of contemporary art on all levels. Members are committed to represent the highest standards of contemporary art, while recognizing the importance of integrity and responsibility in working with artists, collectors, museum professionals, and the cultural community of Dallas.

Each year CADD offers a Scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. The Scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a Fine Arts degree at an accredited university or art institute. The scholarship may be used for tuition, books, equipment, travel, and/or supplies assisting the student in their academic endeavors. Proceeds from CADD events assists with the CADD Scholarship and CADD Educational Programs.

For many, the narrative of the American South, will be informed and confined by its history, but how is its future to be portrayed? This exhibition seeks,  in the broadest sense possible, to showcase contemporary artists’ depictions of the schism and reconciliation of what might be called the New Southern Futurism.

North Texas artists need your support!  To show your support, we hope you will make a gift to the Emergency Artist’s Support League.  As you probably know, visual artists and visual arts professionals often live within narrow financial constraints, even in the best of times. A medical crisis, fire, or other emergency can result in catastrophe.

In response, artists and arts professionals joined together to found EASL (Emergency Artists Support League) in 1992. EASL is operated by a 100% volunteer Board of Directors, allowing for maximum funds to be distributed to artists in need. Since its conception, EASL has provided over $475,000 in grant assistance to North Texas area visual artists and visual art professionals.

We want you to know that we are currently busy at work on new EASL initiatives; including new PR materials, a new website at EASL.US, and the distribution of a bi-annual E-Newsletter. In addition, new programs at area galleries, universities, and museums are being considered and will be rolled out later this year. Of course, the ever-popular Art Heist Art Auction will again bring artists and art collectors together in April 2018 to support local artists in need. We have great plans for the coming years, and we look forward to your participation as an EASL ambassador in our community.

The success of any organization is due in greatest measure to the support that it receives from the community it serves.  That is why we hope that you will support EASL today with a 100% tax-deductible contribution.

Donating is easy through our website at  EASL.US

Contributions mean a great deal to EASL, but they are even more important to artists and families in need. Again, thank you for your generous support.

The pair operated the Nimbus Gallery on Routh Street from 1980 to 1987 and the Moss/Chumley Gallery at the Crescent Court from 1986 to 1989, where they showcased numerous new artists. About the Meadows Museum

The Meadows Museum is the leading U.S. institution focused on the study and presentation of the art of Spain. In 1962, Dallas businessman and philanthropist Algur H. Meadows donated his private collection of Spanish paintings, as well as funds to start a museum, to Southern Methodist University. The Museum opened to the public in 1965, marking the first step in fulfilling Meadows’s vision to create “a small Prado for Texas.”

Today, the Meadows is home to one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. The collection spans from the 10th to the 21st centuries and includes medieval objects, Renaissance and Baroque sculptures, and major paintings by Golden Age and modern masters. Since 2010 the Museum has been engaged in a multidimensional partnership with the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, which has included the exchange of scholarship, exhibitions, works of art, and other resources.
