Art Reviews / Announcements

Update: Art News DFW is currently publishing a biweekly listing of visual art reviews from the sources listed below. It’s called Local Art Reviews & Videos – to find the latest, search on our new category Art Reviews.

Art News DFW does not currently publish critical reviews of exhibits, but that doesn’t mean we won’t tell you how to find ’em. One of the most common ideas about North Texas culture is the lamented dearth of art reviews. But you just have to look! Here are some of the best local sources:

Arts+Culture Texas (formerly Arts+Culture DFW) – Online source and print magazine devoted to contemporary visual and performing arts in Texas.10 issues/year. Distributed free at art venues.

CultureMap Dallas Arts page – Performing arts dominate but several times a month there are reviews of visual arts.

Dallas Arts RevuePhoto-heavy reviews of mainly contemporary art in DFW by photographer JR Compton and guest critics.

Dallas Innovates: Creative – News of the latest creative innovations.

Dallas Morning News Arts Page – Columnists and blogs supply a mix of reviews and announcements for all the arts

Dallas Observer Arts Page –  Reviews, stories and features on the arts (performing arts seem to dominate)

D Magazine Front Row page – Reviews, stories and announcements on the arts – for the Visual Arts section click here

Glasstire – Possibly the best source of thoughtful reviews on Texas art — focuses on the major cities: Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth. Top 5 Video review each week.

KERA’s  Arts& Seeknews and featuresarticles on arts & culture, including KERA-generated content – a mix of announcements and reviews. To limit to visual arts events:  Weekly reviews of contemporary art by Todd Camplin on the art page.

Papercity Arts page covers major cities in Texas – with a focus on visual arts

Star-Telegram Arts-Culture page covers all the arts

Note: we pick up feeds for many of these sources in our local art headlines newspaper: DFW Artists Voice.

For national art review sources, see the final section of the Art News Sources guide.

Many local art museums have a presence on YouTube:

Amon Carter Museum of American Art

Art & Seek

Art This Week

Crow Collection

Dallas Museum of Art

Kimbell Art Museum

Meadows Museum

Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (mod man)

Nasher Sculpture Center

In contrast, we list the venues that host mainly announcements or publicity releases:

Help with Images for Show Entries: / YouTube Videos / Photographing Your Artwork

At this time of the year as webmaster, Sharon Giles receives many questions about resizing or perfecting images of artwork for show entries, such as for the Texas & Neighbors (TxN) show (entry deadline Feb. 1st). Here is her advice:

General tip: Images should look professional — they should show ONLY the work of art (no mat, no frame, no easel or background of any kind.)

You don’t have to buy special graphics software! I recommend for both Mac and Windows users the free online app at They also offer free apps that you can download to your computer, phone or tablet if you don’t want to work online. The interface is both easy to use and powerful. For support on the online features, see For other tutorials on special topics, see

For instructions on resizing images, see the advice we give for TxN entrants at

For YouTube videos on resizing using PIXLR, see You can find thousands of videos showing every aspect of PIXLR. Here’s a sample:

YouTube Videos

So if you can find thousands of videos on just PIXLR, just think how many you can find on the graphic software that’s already on your device. Just go to YouTube and search on the name of your software and a keyword such as “resizing”, etc. to find what you’re looking for.

Here’s an example for Photoshop Elements:

Photographing Your Artwork

On Art News DFW, I have posted a guide to finding guides on this topic:

Photographing Your Artwork – How To Guides

It includes such expert sources as photographer JR Compton, Oxide Gallery, ArtistNetwork, and Empty Easel.

An alternative method for small works is scanning instead of photography, which usually results in better color and less distortion.

You’re probably going to guess that I’m going to suggest searching YouTube for videos on the topic. So here’s a few examples:
