Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival 29th Annual Balloon Fiesta Show – 2017

 – Albuquerque, New Mexico
DEADLINE: 4/1/2017

Fee (Required Fee. Only one fee, whether applying for single wknd. or both wknds.): $30.00
Event Dates: 10/6/2017 – 10/15/2017

Rio Grande’s Balloon Fiesta Show has endless potential to attract an affluent crowd of tourists looking for an authentic New Mexican experience – and ring in stellar sales for the 200 chosen artists & craftsmen!

Now in its second year at the beautiful Sandia Resort and Casino, this long-time favorite festival will showcase a national selection of fine artists and craftsmen – in a completely unique setting.  Each October, Rio Grande’s famous “Big White Tent” becomes home to a bustling art marketplace a full acre in size!  This is the largest art event of its kind in New Mexico. The new site, set in the heart of the action at I-25 & Tramway, makes it more attractive and accessible for tourists than ever before.

The festival location equally blends the beauty of New Mexico with logistical ease for attendees.  Promoters focus on creating a successful sales environment for artists; working hard to attract affluent art buyers and bring in the crowds.  In 2016, tourist attendance increased significantly, visibility was better than ever… and having the balloons floating overhead was nothing short of ‘enchanting’!  Join in on this exciting, top-rated art festival!

TVAA’s Earth Day exhibit call for art

2017 Earth Day Poster

TVAA Downtown Gallery announces a call for entries (Due on March 20)
EARTH DAY April 03 – 28, 2017

Twenty million Americans took to the streets on April 22, 1970 to protest the deterioration of their environment due to the ravages of the industrial revolution. By the end of that year, the first Earth Day had led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. By 1990, Earth Day was a global event, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries. Today, in spite of climate change deniers and well-funded lobbyists, Earth Day has become the largest secular observance in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year, and a day of action that changes human behavior and provokes policy changes.

The TVAA Gallery will once again celebrate Earth Day this April with an exhibit of art inspired by our concern for environmental issues. Work in any medium will be considered.

Image Requirements: JPEGS should be at least 1600 pixels in any direction. Maximum file size for any individual image is 5 MB.

The Painting Center, an artist-run gallery in Chelsea, announces a call for entries for its juried summer exhibition FIGHT OR FLIGHT. This exhibition is about the practice of making art during tumultuous times. Some artists express their personal responses to world events, while others intentionally ignore what is going on and make art that becomes a refuge from the turbulence surrounding them.

Looking back to specific artists’ reactions to unsettled times, there are Picasso’s Guernica and Gerhard Richter’s cycle of paintings October 18, 1977. On the other hand, Matisse created his joyful collaged paper cutouts for his Jazz series during World War II in France, and Jackson Pollock’s poured paintings were created in the nineteen fifties during the McCarthy era. Creativity can feed off the inspiration of current events and/or a personal vision. We are looking for artists’ responses to these times in which we live, in 2017.

Downtown Plano Arts District call for Mural Art – deadline extended to Feb. 17

DOWNTOWN PLANO ARTS DISTRICT SEARCHING FOR MURAL ARTISTS

The Plano Art Association and Historic Downtown Plano Association are looking for artists to paint three large murals in the Arts District. Call: DMP Call for Artists Press Release FINAL

PLANO, TX – Jan. 26, 2017 – The Downtown Mural Project began earlier this month with an open call for artists to leave a legacy in Downtown Plano by applying to paint three large murals in the Arts District. Interested artists can apply at callforentry.org under Plano Mural Project. The application is open from now until February 10.

The project has a budget of $68,000, which will cover compensation for the artists’ design and engineering services, materials, fabrication, installation, and any other costs related to the Downtown Mural Project. “This project is an incredible opportunity to use visual art to celebrate Plano’s rich history,” said Alex Hargis, the Executive Director for the Historic Downtown Plano Association. “We are so excited to collaborate with the artists to create something that will honor Plano’s heritage.”

All three murals will be inspired by historic photos of Plano that are currently being submitted by citizens, so that the Downtown Mural Project will engage the community and keep the murals current and personal to Plano residents. The project will culminate with a public unveiling ceremony and press event in downtown with city officials, residents, private sector leaders and regional art advocates in attendance.

To assist in the artist open call and overall project management of the mural installations, Plano Art Association has enlisted the help of Joshua King, Dallas-based artist and co-founder of Aurora. An advisory council has also been formed to ensure the historical accuracy and relevance of the murals. For more information on the Downtown Mural Project, visit www.planomural.com

About Plano Art Association The Plano Art Association was formed in 1969 as a non-profit organization, and continues to be a vital part of the community. Our purpose is to encourage the visual art development of members, advance visual art values in community projects, further art education, to encourage creative activities related to art, and to enhance visual art values in the Plano community and beyond.

About Historic Downtown Plano Association The Historic Downtown Plano Association is a non-profit organization formed in 2007 for the purpose of promoting tourism in the downtown neighborhood, preserving the district’s rich heritage and supporting the arts. The Association produces events and festivals to advance public awareness of the arts district and to encourage community development.

Although the French refer to still life as “nature morte” meaning “dead life,” the art form generally means a collection of still objects that had been alive, such as fruit, cut flowers or dead animals, thus “still life.” Over the centuries this genre has evolved to include most any collection of inanimate objects, whether or not portrayed realistically.  It is common for artists to learn still life drawing or painting early on in their studies. So whether it is an artwork from your past or a new project, bring out your still life paintings or drawings and celebrate this art form that has endured throughout history.

Splendora Gardens is proud to present:
“THE FLOWER SHOW @ Splendora Gardens”
(an open call, every artist gets in art show about Flowers)
located in the beautiful and historic studio of James Surls and Charmaine Locke:
26041 Midline Road, Cleveland, TX 77328
March 25th, 2017 – April 23rd, 2017
Through their quiet beauty and grave symbolism, flowers continually capture the imagination and inspire the passions of artists. Many delight in the delicacy of petals illuminated by a late spring sun, animated by a gentle wind. The complex play of light, color, value, and texture compel the brush and the pen, the lyric and the tone. Others render flowers and gardens, and the myriad elements that complete them, as metaphors for the most profound aspects of human existence. They emerge out of the verdant mire to denote rebirth, fertility, peace, prosperity, purity, and as Juan Ferret notes in “The Power of Flowers,” spiritual liberation from earthly impulses.
Flowers give voice to our feelings. They adorn our most sacred ceremonies and grace our bodies in life’s important moments. They serve as gifts to our closest loved ones and those we wish to draw closer, and memorials to those we will miss. They embellish the commonplace, bringing joy to families on city windowsills and in country planters. And while coloring our days with vibrant and subtle hues, flowers also nourish new life; the flower’s highest value lies in its interactions in the complex of nature. It is a node, a point of collection, of both beauty and purpose. The dynamic essence of an organism, the flower reaches towards the sun as a lofty realization of its inverse, the root. And as one instant within a larger environment, whether garden or wilderness, it provides sustenance to other organisms. The garden in turn provides sanctuary from the commotion of life. Restful meditation or deep contemplation await those willing to release themselves into the order and elation of the garden, however modest. Although an invention, a vibrant balance of science and aesthetics, the garden symbolizes paradise, creation, and the perfection of nature.
Splendora Gardens is pleased to invite artists of all kinds to submit works to be exhibited, presented, or performed at “The Flower Show.” Whichever discipline you work within, no matter your level of “achievement,” or age, we are calling for works that express your unique interpretation of the theme of “flowers” and/or “gardens.” There will be no juror; every piece submitted will be shown. You are welcome to send visual art, read original poetry or prose, perform a song, or anything else for that matter. You can exhibit or perform works you’ve already created or make something new.
Scheduled visual artists (so far): James Surls, Charmaine Locke, Daniel Johnston, The Wheeler Bro’s, Ruby Surls, Alton Dulaney, and you…

• All artists can submit one piece each ready to hang or display. (Not to exceed 36” in any direction). Unframed works are ok and will be tacked to the wall.
